I just got done with episode 54 and I was pretty moved by the solemn aspect of the story, and how personal things got with Kitaro. And this time, Kitaro actually was a truly neutral party, and the resolution was for the best. This is the kind of Kitaro that I want to see more often (I skipped 53 because it was annoying)
I like the episode with a "SURPRISE BUTTSECKS" bad end like the one with the masks or the one with the copyright, but sometimes, an all-around good ending built on understanding feels great and somehow more deserved than the ending of the Western Youkai arc.
We should make a ranking of the episode quality-wise.

It was an okay episode, just a bit too hamfisted. The ending was heavily foreshadowed. However, why would they make such a big mashup from Japanese folk tales?
The episode was an obvious reference to the take of Tarou Urashima and his 100 year stay in the kingdom of Orihime, but why would they use the Yomotsu Hirasaka as a gateway to an Imaginary Island-like heaven when the place and the gateway are more reminiscent of Takamagahara and the Ame-no-Ukihashi? Yomotsu Hirasaka is the gateway to the Yomi, the world of the dead. Sure, they were pretty much already dead at that point but I feel confused.
