A new trailer for the Konosuba movie with actual footage this time.

I think the characters are a little bit off model compared to DEEN's Konosuba but not too bad. Sylvia is pretty thick.

>Cells At Work! is back on the job.

>The charming anime about anthropomorphized human cells returns for a second season, according to the Cells At Work! Twitter account. The 13-episode first series originally aired beginning in July 2018 and is available on Crunchyroll.

>Based on the ongoing manga of the same name, Cells At Work! describes what happens to the more than 60 million cells inside the human body. Kodansha Comics USA publishes the English language version of the manga. Studio David Production produced the anime adaption, licensed in North America by Aniplex of America.

>According to Anime News Network:

>Kenichi Suzuki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Drifters) directed the television anime at David Production, and Yuuko Kakihara (Tsuki ga Kirei, Persona 4 The Animation) was in charge of series composition, and both Suzuki and Kakihara penned the scripts. Takahiko Yoshida (Welcome to the NHK, Yowamushi Pedal) designed the characters and was also credited as chief animation director, while Kenta Mimuro was credited as cell character designer, prop designer, and animation scene animation director. Keiko Tamaki was credited for sub-character design. Kenichiro Suehiro (Re:Zero, Girls’ Last Tour) composed the music at MAYUKO.

"people"

I don't think anyone that watches anime that doesn't even bother to animate is alive. You say people don't get tired of Dragon Ball. But that's not really fair. Plenty of people I know got tired/bored of Cells at Work after the cancer episode. The people that watched Dragon Ball to begin with are too young to read or simply don't know any better.

>>915053

<Platelets do something cute once every 4 episode

If only? They appeared in a single episode. I don't think the edgy spin-off will get an anime. The show is for 5 to 13 year old children. Ironically the live-action show fits the format a lot better than the anime.

Reposting from other thread because hardly anyone is watching the show, but I think the news is important.

In a wonderful display of copyright under the Japanese legal system, the second episode (the Gochiusa parody) has been removed from streaming sites and the Bluray release has been changed to not include it. A nothing-budget show that was already not going to sell is hurt even more.

Parody is not the same as just making references. A parody is about taking the piss out of a scenario or work by recreating it and poking fun at it, the other is just saying the name of something and asking you to laugh. One requires that jokes be crafted while the other does not.

File: cb9ea514a7e2983⋯.jpg (30,4 KB, 197x300, 197:300, Rei wa.jpg)

The name of the new era which will begin upon Akihito's abdication in a month has been announced: Reiwa.

>Holding up a placard that displayed the kanji characters for the new era, Suga said the name was formulated based on the introduction to a set of poems from “Manyoshu,” the oldest existing compilation of Japanese poetry.

>The first character represents “good fortune,” while the second can be translated as “peace” or “harmony.”

>This is said to be the first time that the characters chosen have drawn from Japanese classical literature, with prior era names, or gengō, having used kanji from Chinese literature.

>In addressing the nation after Suga’s announcement, Abe said Reiwa reflects his hope that it will “help pass Japan’s long history, noble culture and beautiful, four-season nature down to the next generations. I hope each and every one of the Japanese people can bloom their own magnificent flowers — this is the kind of Japan I had in my mind when I settled on the name Reiwa.”

>The poem from which they are taken describes an ume Japanese apricot flower in full bloom in early spring after surviving a cold winter.

>The first-ever use of the kanji “rei” and the nostalgic touch evoked by “wa” — the same character that was used in Showa — makes the forthcoming gengō “perfectly befitting today’s Japan, which both cherishes tradition and strives to try out new things,” Yamanaka was quoted as telling reporters.

>Many Japanese people are not familiar with use of “rei” to mean “good fortune” or “auspicious.” For most, the first phrase that comes to mind is likely to be “meirei,” which literally means an order or command from a supervisor. Masaharu Mizukami, a professor of Chinese and Japanese literature at Chuo University, said the choice of “rei” makes sense given positive phrases such as “reijō” and “reisoku” — a respectable way of referring to someone’s daughter or son, respectively. But on the other hand, “rei” has a history of being screened out in the past due to its authoritative implications, as were feared by some of the Japanese public on Monday, Mizukami said.

Making your own BDs is definitely better from a technological and freedom standpoint. Any commercially pressed BDs are legally required to be burdened with DRM, and buying them helps to fund the development of even worse DRM.

And if you just want to support the anime studios, then it's better to import the Japanese BD. I don't know how much of a cut the localization companies take, but I imagine it's quite substantial.

All English dub actors have that anime voice that's neither natural speech nor affected enough to be campy and fun. It sits in this uncanny valley that makes suspension of disbelief impossible. It just sounds like some dickhead recording lines in a studio and that mental image never leaves you as you watch the clip. Maybe that's how you get that "fucking around" feel, but I get the sense that they're really not. It's like they have some mental conception of what an anime character is supposed to sound like and then they shoot for that. It's hard to say if this is poor directing or if there is a conspiracy, or perhaps an unintentional one, by their peers to develop a standardized "anime voice".

I hate that they don't even make the slightest effort to cast and direct actors that actually fit the characters. They really only have two personalities: overacting male and squeaky female. Katsuragi is supposed to sound like a generic ikemen OP MC, but he just sounds like "guy", not self-righteous or "heroic" in the slightest. Aqua sounds like a man doing a female voice. Kazuma is so bland and misinterpreted that it's insulting to Fukushima Jun's original performance. Darkness' actual voice is fitting enough but the actress is terrible at delivering her lines, and Megumin again sounds like "generic bubbly anime female" which is not her character at all.

I don't think it's that simple. I think it's more about priorities. American studios are focused on different things than other countries. For example: American studios are infamous for being massive sticklers about lip-syncing, I've heard plenty of interviews with VAs talking about the classes and hoops they had to jump through to nail down lip-syncing to the standards of their studios, joking about how old Godzilla movies and their horrible lip-syncing traumatized Americans into being autistic about it. Saying that, I can't help but notice that the lip-syncing here is goddamn flawless. Reminds me of the JoJo dub where in the Steely Dan climax of Part 3 with the massive ORAORAORA scene, the VA broke up the ORAs with various grunts to match Star Platinum's mouth. Even the original Japanese dub never has nearly the effort into lip-sync that Americans have, you can see plenty of anime where it seems like japanese VAs didn't even attempt/worry about lip-sync. For whatever reason, American studios see lip-sync as a hill to fight to the death on.

If the choice is between perfectly synced lips or an accurately translated script with voices that aren't grating, I'd take the latter. It says a lot when American companies consider that to be the most vital aspect to a localization over everything else.

Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

That explains the weird delivery and often shitty scripts but it still doesn't explain why they fail on the casting and directing front, misrepresenting characters' personalities completely. If anything it's admirable that they're at least worried about something even if it's a dumb thing to be worried about when doing dubs because I always thought they're very half-assed.

Another thing I remember is in American animation, the animators will (ideally) animate key consonant and vowel sounds in the mouths of characters and then spell words out with their assortment of mouth frames around the performances of the VAs. But in anime, you have the simplistic: mouth closed, mouth half open, and mouth fully open. Using those three states, anime go for a basic loop of a flapping mouth and just plop the VA's performance on top.

But once the footage is shipped over to the USA for a dub, the VA's are doing the work backwards, and since the animation is already done, they carefully and autistically shape their script and performance to match lip flaps that the Japanese studio probably only spent half a day thinking about. "You need a line that expresses X, Y, and Z, and can be said within 2.25 seconds, and also lands on a 't' sound mid sentence to match the 2 frames where the character flashes her teeth"

I guess now I get what you mean with it sounding like an abriged version. It seems like they voiceactors know the role they are supposed to play adn they are trying but they don't actually got the acting skills to do it.

Also, I think a problem with new american anime dubs is that they try to sound too much like Japanese. It just seems fake, especially when the girls try to sound as high-pitched, which is unnaturally high-pitched in burger.

>>927449

>I wonder if it'd be any better if they tried dubbing in any English speaking nation other than America. I hate it.

I honestly can't tell, since I'm bad at judging dub quality but check out some playthrough/cutscene compilation of Xenoblade Chronicles and decide for yourself.

>>927450

Eh, I dunno. Germany also has some good dubs but there are also many shit ones. I assume that both countries just dub more than the US, who don't have to do big-budget dubs for mainstream media. But as with live-action, bad acting will always live on. It's just a strange phenomena that recent american anime dubs are this bad. Even cheap JRPG dubs sound better. Maybe the fact that they aren't trying as much makes them actually better.

Breaking news! More idolfag suffering! Mass suicide inbound!

Idol unit NEO JAPONISM is disbanding.

Following rumors of a major breach in contract involving sexual relations and boyfriends, three girls were removed from the unit. After talks between the remaining two and the staff, it was decided NEO JAPONISM would be no more.

NEO JAPONISM was a new Chika unit formed in December 2017. They put on shows nearly every month since and consistently put out new songs throughout. As front liners of a new type of idol scene, the brand new girls' popularity started as a slow burn that quickly became a meteoric rise.

Watching them grow from their beginnings, their crazy fast rise certainly shocked me. Even outside of Japan you could see fans wearing their merchandise at events.

Each of their performances felt unique and had an extremely passionate and sincere air to them.

Out of all this, I'm just glad Mamiya Yuu-chan had no allegations thrown at her. She was my favorite and often I felt that it was her performance that created the unique atmosphere around the unit. She was the one sometimes screaming her lines in a way that would compliment and encourage any yakkai wotagei and snap anyone out of the real world and invite them to connect with their passionate hearts. Overly sincere, she is also the most emotional. During their Christmas Live last year, she kept asking the audience if it was okay that they were there on that day while crying.

Rest in piece, NeoJapo. I just hope I can see Yuu-chan on stage again.

Mamiya Yuu's words after the disbanding:

Thank you very much for your support for about a year and a half.

I am good at making the wrong choice of life. High school dropped out, vocational school soon stopped going, and I have lived a life that I can only regret, a lot from small things to big things.

I wanted to somehow get out of it, I wanted to change myself weak, and I applied for the audition was the opportunity to enter NEO JAPONISM.

Before I was active, I just liked singing and I never knew what Idol was like. I was not interested.

But as I was active, I knew a lot of things about idols and I liked it.

I think idol is a really tough world. It was many times more difficult than I thought. But if you stand on the stage you will be smiling and not have vocabulary, but it's really good to be an idol. I just want to enthusiastically talk to myself that I was not interested in idol.

I have an appropriate personality, low voice and not idol,

There are people who say that Mamiya's song likes voice. At first I was very nervous but I can sing a song in front of a lot of people, and I think I can never experience it if I live normally. It was really good to do. There are a lot of small regrets, but it seems good to apply for the audition of the idol at that time, it was right now.

I am sorry for the difficulty in reading because I am not very good at thinking about sentences like this.

I am really indebted. It was a year and a half that I got a lot of love.

Thank you very much.

Want extra suffering? They dubbed the Cells at Work OP. White Cell can't sing to save his life, has a flat intonation, at least the others seem to have a decent grasp at singing or putting effort.

If there's something that American dub will rarely ever do well is dubbing little girls. Japanese seiyuu don't sounds like real little girls, but have a very distinct "anime little girl voice". Other times, they might even use young girls like Dororo, but already have a decent grasp at acting. Most Western actresses in anime dubs make the girls sound overly squeaky, or like their ovaries dropped years ago. Ichigo Mashimaro was probably the only one that landed the voice, but the acting was terrible.

I like what this Anon is saying, it feels like they're trying to standardize an "anime voice". And rather than talking in a mostly neutral way except for wacky characters or oddballs, they sound instead like millennials talking, not like an anime character talking, it's hard to explain.

I'll put it this way: I loved the older Fire Emblems. The translation was done well, they talk in a formal or polite manner, and even the funny characters don't stray too far from this kind of speech. See Hector, he's brash and all, but still doesn't use more modern mannerisms or way of speaking. There's a shift between Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. PoR still mostly keeps this kind of speech, but later found out that they "spiced up" some characters, more noticeably Marcia, where she was a bit shy but dutiful, but in the NA she used food as expletives, saying CRACKERS and such; still tolerable. The speech seems more spiced up in Radiant Dawn, trying to make Ike sound more like a wise guy, or at least it feels like that.

But come Awakening, any pretense of this kind of formal, polite speech was mostly gone, and replaced with quirky one-liners, personalities and conversations. Modern dubs feel like this, unrealistic even in the realm of goddamn anime.

Brits do it better. Listen to any game by From Software from the last few years, and you will hear decent voice acting in English. Déraciné even has acceptable little girls voices. Of course all these games need to have a strong hint of sadness, so they really wouldn't work for a SoL, but it shows that there is potential. Just not in America.

Catgirls soon for domestic ownership.

>A Japanese stem-cell scientist is the first to receive government support to create animal embryos that contain human cells and transplant them into surrogate animals since a ban on the practice was overturned earlier this year.

>Hiromitsu Nakauchi, who leads teams at the University of Tokyo and Stanford University in California, plans to grow human cells in mouse and rat embryos and then transplant those embryos into surrogate animals. Nakauchi's ultimate goal is to produce animals with organs made of human cells that can, eventually, be transplanted into people.

>Until March, Japan explicitly forbid the growth of animal embryos containing human cells beyond 14 days or the transplant of such embryos into a surrogate uterus. That month Japan’s education and science ministry issued new guidelines allowing the creation of human-animal embryos that can be transplanted into surrogate animals and brought to term.

>Human–animal hybrid embryos have been made in countries such as the United States, but never brought to term. Although the country allows this kind of research, the National Institutes of Health has had a moratorium on funding such work since 2015.

>“It is good to proceed stepwise with caution, which will make it possible to have a dialogue with the public, which is feeling anxious and has concerns,” says science-policy researcher Tetsuya Ishii of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

That's one of the least bad cases of localization. When your (presumably) normalfag sister finds drawn porn of little girls under your bed, she's going to be thinking that you're a pedo, that's the joke. The Japanese also use lolicon interchangeably with pedophile in a light context, see any harem protagonist getting called a lolicon when they deal with the token loli-looking-but-16-year-old character. And as others have said, this has happened a million times before.

>The Japanese also use lolicon interchangeably with pedophile in a light context

But in English "pedophile" is pretty much never used lightly, hence why it's bad translation. It's like conflating 様 and さん into "Mr./Ms.". You can see the logic and it's not completely wrong but it misses an important subtlety.

Only in anime. It's a pretty harsh word to use IRL in Japan even jokingly.

Not otaku news, but still relevant to /a/, since we share the site with this stuff.

Apparently the El Paso shooter yesterday was from 8/pol/ and posted there before the attack. The site did continue as normal after the Christchurch murders, but this makes three times in less than a year, and especially with yesterday's being in the US where the servers are located, I worry about the site's future. In the Sadpanda threads there was talk about the death of imageboards, but I'm starting to wonder if we might find ourselves on the bunker sooner rather than later.

Nothing will be "forcing" anyone to go back you dumb faggot; You'd actually have to be retarded enough to go there of your own free will instead of seeking alternatives hidden in the far reaches of the internet. Or regrouping at the bunker and setting sail from there as a small collective.

As long as there still remains free internet there will always be solutions, and if the whole of the internet should become compromised you'll have bigger problems to deal with than mourning the loss of h8chan.

>>948629

In any case, it doesn't matter. Every one on here should have been mentally and spiritually prepared for 8ch's passing a long time ago. This place is not permanent and will come to pass. Get that through your fucking heads already and take it easy.

If you're worried about losing contact with 8/a/ keep the bunker close to heart, as well as the myriad of other small chans in the /jp/verse that have popped up over the years. Get your ass on IRC and idle #8/a/ on Rizon in case anything ever happens.

I'm not saying quantity trumps quality, but there reaches a point when you just don't have enough people posting to be worth it. We already have a few threads a season where it seems like there's only a tiny handful of anons watching. I'm afraid that once we're relegated to the bunker, it'll reach the point where the catalog is full of threads that look like our Maou-jou de Oyasumi thread, with one lonely anon posting into a near-vacuum.

To be honest I've barely kept up with current season anime or anime in general. Haven't really read any VNs either. I cherish all the /jp/ things but still I find myself spending less time on it. The bulk of any posterbase on any imageboard has always been underage and or mentally ill people and once you get rid of them then you get those threads. Mainstream sites has a steady supply of those people.
