 No.910785

Welcome to the Sund/a/y /jp/Cinema Club!

This thread is for discussion of all things related to Japanese films. Let's explore and discover this underrepresented part of Nip culture. What movies have you watched and which are your favorites? What directors or actors do you enjoy? Got anything on your backlog?

I'm hoping we could use this thread for 2D as well since there are so many good movies we never get to talk about because they don't warrant their own thread. If you've never watched a Japanese movie before and are hesitant to do so because you swore off 3D films for good - you're in for a treat. There is scenery and visuals of such beauty they will make your eyes water. There's the Jap humor, there's cool action scenes and there's endearing stories. Most importantly, it will compliment your anime and manga in giving you another piece of intimate understanding about something you love. All wrapped up in a clean package free of westernshit cancer.

In addition, every Sunday we have a movie stream. Two movies are shown with an intermission between them. The first is a lighter movie, usually a kaiju or tokusatsu movie. The second is a heavier movie, by directors like Kurosawa or Kitano. In general these are more serious but not always. The movies start at 6:00 EST. We've switched to using cytu.be since it's a bit more reliable than streamchan and until stated otherwise the link will be the same. You will need to install a userscript on your browser in order for the movies to play if you haven't already.

Stream link: https://cytu.be/r/sundaycinema

Userscript: https://cytu.be/js/cytube-google-drive.user.js

Borrowing from the original OP because he put it quite nicely.

Sunday's Double Feature will be:

Frankenstein Conquers the World aka Frankenstein vs Baragon: We haven't watched a kaiju movie in ages so we're going to watch one that even I haven't watched. During WWII the German's steal an immortal heart from Dr. Frankenstein's research lab and pass it off to the Japanese where it is eventually irradiated in Hirosaki. Also, Baragon shows up (this is his first appearance).

Suicide Club aka Suicide Circle: A detective is trying to find the cause of a string of suicides. Despite the simple premise it is supposed to be quite the unusual film. Recommended a while ago in the thread.

Runtime: 3 hours 20 minutes

Surprisingly it's already been a year (or maybe a little past that, I think we started in February) since the movie stream has been running, and who knows how long since the original thread itself. The dark days of disconnects and streamchan are long behind us. Here's to another year.

So here's the reason for the sub issues at the end of Frankenstein, there were two endings filmed. In the original, Frankenstein and Baragon fall into a crevice that opens up in the earth and then the movie ends. This version is where the subs I used come from. In the international version, Frankenstein is dragged into the ocean by the octopus. This version is the one we watched.

>Henry G. Saperstein had requested an alternative ending for the international release in which Frankenstein battled a giant octopus. This resulted in the cast and crew being reassembled after principal photography and post-production had wrapped, as well as building a new set and creating the octopus. Despite filming the new ending, Saperstein ended up cutting it regardless because he believed the octopus "wasn't that good".

>When the film was in production, trade magazines listed this film's title as Frankenstein vs. the Giant Devilfish. Honda had stated the reason why the octopus ending was initially requested was because the American co-producers were "astonished" by the octopus scene in King Kong vs. Godzilla and wanted a similar scene. Honda also confirmed that various endings were shot, stating: "In fact Mr. Tsuburaya had shot five or six final scenes for this film. The infamous giant octopus is only one of these endings." Honda also expressed that the alternate ending was never intended to be released on the Japanese version, stating: "there was never any official plan to utilize the sequence; but an alternative print with that ending was accidentally aired on television surprising many Japanese fans because it was not the ending they had remembered from the original theatrical release."

War of the Gargantuans(1.5 hours long): Frankenstein's cells ended up creating two new monsters, one in the sea who is peace-loving, and one in the mountains who is violent.

I don't know if she's an idol or anything, but her only anime role was as Urabe in Nazo no Kanojo X, and she was outstanding as that.

After Miyuki, it seems it might be a trend for girls who only get one role in anime to be amazing in that role as well as their other activities. I want to know how she is as an actress.

Sunday's Movies will be:

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe: The first entry in the Heisei Gamera reboot pitting Gamera vs Gyaos. Major upgrades include a bigger budget, less obnoxious children, improved special effects, and the list goes on. It's not hard to say that the reboot improves on almost every issue I have with the original. It is much more similar to the Heisei Godzilla films (and in fact it's one of the greatest missed opportunities that Toho declined the offer to do a Godzilla vs Gamera film).

Shiko Funjatta (aka Sumo Do Sumo Don't): A college student gets blackmailed by his professor into joining the sumo team in order to graduate, along with other reluctant sumo team members. A ragtag misfits sports comedy.

While in stir, family member Aoki attempts to seize power from the boss, and Miyoshi finds himself stuck between the two factions with no honorable way out. This movie series launched the trend of jitsuroku yakuza films which were based on true stories and thus the yakuza act more like thugs.

Ken aka The Sword: Ken is the story of Jiro Kokubu, star pupil of the university of Kendo club, for whom the sport is a way of life. Unwavering in his asceticism, he willingly forgoes girls, parties and rock music devoting his entire being to the practice of Kendo.

Based on a short story by Yukio Mishima

Yukoku aka Patriotism: A Noh dramatization of Lt. Shinji Takeyama, a participant in the 2-26 incident, and his wife Reiko.

Written, directed, produced, and starring Mishima. Also appeared in the very first /jp/ thread if you recall.

Runtime: About 3 and a half hours as both Tetsuo and Yukoku are short. Tetsuo is about an hour while Yukoku is half an hour.

I'm glad you enjoy them. What were your thoughts on Tony Takitani? To me it seems like a cautionary tale about getting rid of meaningful things. His wife said that buying new clothes fills up something inside her. Certainly it's just a kind of obsessive impulse that makes her buy all these clothes. But compare this with how Tony reacts after her death. He at first tries to physically replace her with a secretary but can't. So he eventually gets rid of all of his wife's clothes. And then he does the same thing with his father's collection of old records when he dies. It is at this point, when he has sold off everything, that he becomes completely alone and what drives him to try to reconnect with the secretary. Memories fade but possessions can serve as a reminder. This is at least what the film made me think, I don't know whether this was Murakami's intention or not. And of course, he fails at reconnecting with her, underlining his loneliness. He calls and she doesn't answer.

Thinking about Ken some more, Kagawa making Kokubu seem human to the rest of the club seems to be a sort of allegory for the Emperor's loss of divinity as a result of WWII. This is what then leads the club members to forsake their former loyalty to Kokubu.

As I am away visiting family for the weekend, there will be no stream tomorrow. I apologize for the late notice. As it is however, next week will probably be a memorial stream of sorts for both Monkey Punch and Kazuo Koike. Lone Wolf and Cub inspired several jidaigeki in the 70s and there are of course several Lupin movies to choose from though as of yet I have not decided which one to show. If you have a recommendation or a preference, post it.

It's too bad Oshii never got to make his Lupin. The guy hates anime now, anyway, so it's all good.

Interesting story about the Lupin movie that Oshii was originally working on, Legend of the Gold of Babylon.

>Flushed with the success of Hayao Miyazaki’s earlier Castle of Cagliostro, the producers hoped to find a similarly big name, and initially hired Mamoru Oshii on Miyazaki’s recommendation. Oshii, however, provided a script that was characteristically off-the-wall, unhelpfully deconstructing many elements of the Lupin III franchise, and not actually featuring Lupin at all, choosing instead to focus on the detectives trying to track him down. He was thrown off the project before a single frame had been drawn, although certain elements of the Babylon script would be recycled in Oshii’s later works.

>Having lost their big name from the anime world, the producers of Babylon instead approached Suzuki, freshly returned from a 1984 retrospective of his films at the Pesaro Film Festival.

This Suzuki is none other than Seijun Suzuki, the man who directed Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter, and Fighting Elegy.

Late reply but tony takitani was magnificent my favorite pick you've done by far. I loved the theme of loss and regret. I loved the subtle details the narrators provided for the viewers. Multiple narrators was a nice touch. Also, since my brother in law passed a few years ago i could see my sister a bit in Tony. and how she mourned his loss.

I think we all see ourselves a lot like Tony does as we get older our passions become secondary to survival and companionship but as you pointed out when we loose those relationships material things becomes our reminder.

This is where I'm not sure what the message is but the prison metaphor for tony at the end is strange. He might be in a prison because he gave away his possessions and reminders of those he loved and is stuck in the prison of his own memories of what love was lost. He is in a prison like his father was but of his own making one that is likely impossible to escape from by discarding the things that would help him to expedite himself from the metaphorical room in his mind.

Regardless of intent this film hit me hard and for a good few hours after watching it it may have been raining in my room.

This Sunday will be slightly unusual. The feature will be Maquia (see >>926589 ) since it's Mother's Day and this anon has already encoded the movie for viewing but the light intro movie will be a kaiju episode from MST3K. Either Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (aka Ebirah, Horror of the Deep) a movie which we did watch but ran into troubles with; or Gamera vs. Guiron the first of the two cash-grab Gamera movies (the fourth and fifth entries) which featured two child leads, one white, one Japanese, and padded out the runtime with stock footage from the previous movies. I haven't decided, but I will probably opt for Godzilla. Start time will be as normal, but intermission will go on just a little bit longer to meet the 8:00 start time for Maquia.

The movie definitely has a cutting side to it. I think you are right that the prison Tony is in is a mental one that it's built out of his loneliness and grief, which makes it difficult for him to escape. It is essentially his loneliness that is keeping him lonely. I don't know whether the treasured possessions of his wife and father could actually cure this loneliness, him sitting in that empty room only seems to exacerbate his loneliness. If we consider the possessions as metaphors for memories of that person, then the room is a metaphor for Tony's mind. Thus his wife starts to fill up his mind as they live together, filling it with clothes. Once she dies, all the clothes just sit their, his memories of her. He tries to get a proxy for them in the secretary and ends up relieving himself of the burden by pushing some of the clothes onto her. Then he sells all her clothes, which is him trying to move on or perhaps forget her entirely. And now his room is empty. Then his father dies and his father's record collection is placed in his room. It is noticeably small in the room, just as Tony spent little meaningful time with his father. He hardly knew him. And then Tony moves on and sells the records. Once more the room is empty. Well, maybe this idea isn't all that different from a person's possessions helping to remember that person.

Furthermore, Tony doesn't have any interests or hobbies like his wife or father had. As you note, our passions become secondary to survival and companionship. What will happen to him when he dies? Does he have any treasured possessions to fill a room with? What will he leave behind? Both his wife's clothes and his father's record collection were unique, suited to the tastes of the owner and thus representative of them. Tony has nothing like this. As I recall, and my memory is a little fuzzy on this, all he has is his work. But no hobby, no collection.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie.

Giant Monsters of the South Seas: Extraterrestrial amoeba-like alienshijack a probe and, after crash landing on a small South Pacific atoll, create gigantic monsters from native lifeforms with plans of conquering the Earth. Jigokumon aka Gate of Hell: A samurai who tries to marry a woman he rescues discovers that she is married. This film won a slew of awards in '54, including at Cannes. It is also a very early Japanese color film, Daiei's first.

Total runtime: 3 hours

Here is a list of Kurosawa's top 100 films, from Broken Blossoms by D.W. Griffith to Hana-bi by Kitano, with brief comments from Kurosawa rather poorly translated. I gave it a cursory edit on some of the worst spelling mistakes but the grammar is still pretty bad.

Sunday's movies will be:

The Human Vapor: The film is the story of a librarian and his love for a dancer and his ability to transform into a gaseous state. A sci-fi detective story of sorts.

Tasogare Seibei aka Twilight Samurai: Set a few years before the Meiji Restoration, it is about Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai employed as a bureaucrat. Poor, but not destitute, he still manages to lead a content and happy life with his daughters and his mother who has dementia.

Total runtime: 3 and a half hours about.

Note: there seem to be a few problems with processing files on Google Drive this weekend, so in the event that Tasogare Seibei isn't done (The Human Vapor has been sitting on my drive for weeks so it's been finished), I do have an episode of MST3K as a back up. It's called Fugitive Alien, originally a Japanese SF TV series by Tsuburuya Productions then the rights were sold to an American company who produced a film cut and dubbed it. Interestingly, the TV show featured Jo Shishido, the star of Minagoroshi no Kenju, Branded to Kill, Youth of the Beast, and a few other yakuza movies we've watched.

Sunday's Double Feature:

Dead or Alive: Not to be confused with the movies based off the video game series, this a yakuza film directed by Takashi Miike. He is mostly known for making extremely bloody and violent movies, such as the Ichi the Killer live-action adaption. The only movie of his we've watched is One Missed Call so I'm looking forward to see something which is more indicative of most of his other movies.

Kikujiro: Beat Takeshi helps a young boy look for his mother during summer vacation as a sort-of picaresque. Joe Hisaishi did the score, as usual for Kitano's early movies.

Sunday's stream will be KyoAni related. Disappearance? All of Fumoffu? Might encode some other stuff and see if it processes on time. I'm not sure. We can take a poll when the time comes to decide what to watch. If you'd like to contribute, encode something into mp4 and upload to a Google Drive account.

Unfortunately, I got a job so this Sunday's stream will have to be pushed back by two hours to 8:00PM EST. I am not sure yet how this will effect the time of future streams but I will let you all know. See you all tomorrow at 8:00.

The Burmese Harp: In the war's closing days, when a conscience-driven Japanese soldier fails to get his countrymen to surrender to overwhelming force, he adopts the lifestyle of a Buddhist monk. Directed by Kon Ichikawa who directed a wide variety of films from family-friendly comedies to serious war movies. I finally have a more or less regular work work schedule. For the future, all sunday streams will be at 7:00 EST, that is one hour later than usual. Otherwise everything will remain the same as before.

Tomorrow's movies will be:

Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards!: Police detective Tajima, tasked with tracking down stolen firearms, turns an underworld grudge into a blood-bath. Directed by Seijun Suzuki

Kato Hayabusa Sento-tai: A 1944 biopic of a real life flying ace in the Second World War. One of the only war movies made during the war that I could find that is subbed. Besides this, the film is also noteworthy for 1. being the origin of the Hayabusa song and 2. having special effects done by Eiji Tsuburaya who got his start doing special effects for war movies. The special effects he did for The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya, which depicted the attack on Pearl Harbor, was so realistic that the American occupation force initially mistook it for actual footage of the event. Unfortunately, it doesn't have subs though it is also on youtube (just like Kato Hayabusa).

Remember: the stream will be at 7:00 EST.
