Yes. The smaller ones are better about it, though. It's straight up merchants in the temple shit. It doesn't seem that bad, however, because the nip shrine visit involves money by itself, as well as the inherent respectfulness of nip culture. Imagine a booth for bibleman merchandise smack in the middle of the Vatican. It's like that but nip flavored. But I'm just a baja gaijin so I probably just don't get it.

How is it that Japs have the best fucking aesthetic sense around? I almost feel like a fedora wearing neckbeard saying it, but the elegance, simplicity, subtlety of ornamentation and asymetry, understanding of contrast and balance, and the way it all fits so comfortably in nature is just perfect.

Probably something to do with no garbage judeo-chrisitan beliefs to ruin the world of art and cultural homogeneity letting them develop their aesthetic style without it constantly being replaced or influenced by foreign styles or just outright destroyed as has sometimes happened to most European cultures.

Part of it is probably because it rains 2000mm a year and the entire archipelago is a a giant flower bouquet of abundant vegetation and forestry coupled with a very distinct four season climate that somehow manages excludes the extreme ranges of siberian winter and mojave summer. Not much shortage of aesthetic inspiration when everything around you is a literal final fantasy-esque landscape.

Also the principles of zen buddhism and other ancient chinese influences.

Say what you want but the ancient chinks had an alright fashion sense.

It was pretty common even among Europeans until about a generation or two ago. Albeit usually it was caused by wearing undersized shoes rather than by intentional binding.
