Elves were the only things other than the gods themselves the Germanic people allowed for a synonym/substitute for humanity.

As for the gods, there was no real distinction between elves and gods in the Skaldic verse. Both were used interchangeably. There's also some overlap between elves/gods and ancestral spirits.

And the connection to the Germanic Gods and the Germanic people should be obvious as tons of heroes, kings and wise men were said to be decedents of Gods or Elves and regular humans.

Even when Christianity became dominant many stories still involve elves mixing with righteous rulers and heroes, like in Karel ende Elegast where one of Charlemagne's sister married the elf king Elegast.

Most people have the idea that elves are a naturally beautiful race, while the dwarves aren't really imagined by many like that in popular fantasy. It would be refreshing to see more cute female dwarves in shows alongside the wood/dark/high elves that are almost always in fantasy shows.

This can largely be attributed to D&D muddying things up. Gnomes, Dwarves, and Hins ("halflings") used to largely be considered the same thing from a folklore standard (hence why the dwarves in Snow White act like both gnomes and dwarves). Then D&D separated them, so all people think of are bearded women now when they think of dwarves.

Ackchhshyualley, the Celtic conception of the Elvenfolk - what we might refer to as Sidhe - are quite a bit different than the Nordic conception - we can call these Alfar- where they are portrayed in a more divine light. Tolkien's original idea of the Elves was based principally upon the Sidhe, as they were indigenous to the British isles, and the Hobbit reflects this more strongly; as he clarified through the process, and worked out his mythology, his Elves grew closer to the Alfar, while the Sidhe influence was reduced to make way for giant battles against dragons and things. The spread of Christianity in the British isles displaced the native religions, and the Fae creatures were slowly pushed back, until only the 'little folk' remained, resulting in the conception of the little shoe elves. This remained the dominant conception of 'elf' in the Anglo-American west for centuries, up until the (illegal) paperback release of Lord of the Rings in cheap format, followed by the spread of D&D and derivatives of D&D, and further adjusted by the Peter Jackson movies a few decades later, have essentially permanently altered the public conception. The Japs, who based their shit off of D&D, are running off of that.
