Evangelion 4.0 to be released in 2020, special pre-film screening begins.
It was revealed in a special pre-film screening on July 20, 2018 (Friday), that "Shin · Evangelion Theatrical Version: ||", the sequel to "Evangelion New Theatrical Version: Q" (released on November 17, 2012) will be released in 2020.
The clip was released before the first day of screening for Hosoda Mamoru's "Mirai of the Future", leading to numerous tweets from surprised fans. As of 12:30, there has been no notice on the official website nor on the official Twitter, nor was there an announcement that the clip would be played in advance.

The few surviving civilians and side characters now command some sort of Gurren Lagann spaceship, the 2nd movie Rei is ded and replaced with a new clone, Gendo got new glasses. I also think that many of the backgrounds looked too surreal. I could see those in some SHAFT show but it didn't work in the movie.

I don't remember there being a shitstorm with 3.0, and I enjoyed it, so I think I would have remembered if the board descended into endless shitposting. Then again, it's possible I didn't pay as much attention when the BD came out, since I'd already seen the camrip and lurked the camrip threads extensively. Well, I'll take that back partially - there was divisiveness about if Q Rei was better or worse girl than Rei, and regardless it rubbed a ton of people the wrong way. Including me, Rei best girl. The fact they were basically forced to explain a story which has already been completed. The metaphorical storytelling behind NGE already told everything that needed to be said so how do even add new context to a perfect story? Honestly i thought 3.0 was bad. Really bad. 2.0 left you on the high of going from "man it looks good but its really just retelling the same sto-OHSHITNOITSNOT" and then that teaser was building excitement for years.
Then we got 3.0 and its just feels like 'back to the drawing board, but less polished' and in a word it was lame.
Now granted since then he has done Shin Gojira which was a superb character drama, commentary on japans lack of disaster preparedness and interesting take on the jiji of Kaiju so maybe he got his groove back?

This is a non-issue since they could've easily got a bonus from TV Tokyo or so after the series was such a huge success for 24 episodes long. It's pretty common practice by animation studios to ask for budget increase especially in the last couple eps. But they didn't needed it in the first place.

It's a very simple and optimistic ending to what is really a pretty simple story. The mecha and angels and action and intrigue are just garnish on the main plot (Shinji's character arc), which is a point the TV end drives home while concluding the series nicely. EoE is a fun ride, but is over-complicated, unnecessary, and doesn't close out the story like the TV end (which makes sense given that Anno probably didn't want to make it).
For whatever reason, I hated Shinji and wasn't a fan of the TV end originally, but after a rewatch I really enjoyed both of them.
