>Anime adaptation greenlit in 2013.

>On 2014, SNK Playmore throws a lawsuit at squareenix for using their characters.

>SE has to recall all their printed volumes of high score girl and suspend publication till 2015.

>Anime confirmed for 2018.

The story revolves around Harou Yaguchi a egocentric brat whose only passion is fighting games in a competitive manner and his encounters with his classmate: Oono Akira, a silent girl he dislikes for having everything and finds in his favorite arcade far away from home.

There was a lot of struggling for this anime to happen but I think it was worth it, the CG is a pain at the beginning but it kind of grew on me by the end of the episode. The Characters are likeable and the comedy is nice. I also found the gaming explanations interesting.

What are your impressions of it so far /a/?

 No.843565

I found the gaming explanations interesting but the characters definitely aren't likable and the comedy is average. It's certainly not objectively bad, but I don't think I'll even give this one 3 episodes.

 No.843595

I read and enjoy the manga, despite its trash tier art, so I'll probably watch this all the way through.

 No.843605

I have not read the manga, mainly due to never having gotten into videogames. But I have seen this show getting listed on "upcoming seasons" for so long, the constant delays did pique my interest as to why it never got done. Until now.

That list of corporate credits-is rather long and impressive. Together, in one show. But with JCStaff as the studio and Square Enix backing, i'm glad they got this done. I still don't play videogames-i'm a pinball player-but I do know the history of the arcade games.

 No.843677

I wonder how far the adaption is going go. I liked the manga enough that I can overlook the CG, it wasn't even as cheap and offensive as it normally is.

The ED is pretty nice, Oono's okay. Guy is awful and it really sucks that it's all with his narration. Games are whatever, never liked fighting games and my country never had arcades, either.

Watching that kid use the Guile Handcuffs was a real nostalgia blast. As far as I'm concerned the story is just a flimsy excuse to have fun reminiscing about early arcade games.

Apart from the >3DCG this style of direction seems more akin to an animated 4koma than a serious Romance animu with slapstick comedy.

It doesn't feel right compared to the source material and the pacing was fucked up in parts, the first battle against Oono dragged on much longer than it should've.

The bleak, calm and mildly visceral aesthetic of the manga is pretty much lost, the anime looks and feels like some happy go lucky comedy whereas the manga seems to set its priorities straight away.

I wouldn't say the anime is shit yet, but if they try and keep the same tone with the inevitable badly inserted sponsorship adverts throughout the entire thing without having adapted the rest of the story to said tone it certainly will be.

Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with an adaptation taking a different path from its source material, I just can't see it working out well from what I've seen so far.

The ED is nice though.

Now bully me for my inferior opinions.

There's a pretty big difference between 'makes a reference to a different work in a similar field' and 'literally put de-baconed freddy krueger in your game' when making a homage. Not that I care that KOF does this, they do it well, but you still need to start asking questions when these lawyers start trying to sue someone else for using their own stolen characters. Kinda playing with fire hoping warner brothers or kyary pamyu pamyu's producer don't decide to start breathing down your neck.

 No.846936

That CGI is really nearing Berserk levels.

 No.846981

>>846935

Judging by SNK's history with references and such, the characters might look very similar but they don't act or fight similar to what they're looking like.

Choi is indeed midged debaconed Freddy, and uses his claws to fight but the homage stops there. Sylvie is indeed bootleg Kyary (basically mixing Candy Candy with PONPONPON) but uses electrical powers and stuff the real life thing doesn't have. Benimaru is literally still called "Polnareff" by the staff for his '94 attire but went a long way since then. Raiden is Big Van Vader but with a very different moveset.

If anything, Japanese lawyers say it's too much when it goes beyond just parody, and since we're speaking of SNK we can go to K9999 from 2001, literally Tetsuo from Akira with different colors, down to moves and even the same seiyuu. Needless to say, it's the one character will never return, and even the 2002 remake replaces him with a much less blatant ripoff.

2000 was 18 years ago now. That's older than the average person here. Even for some relative real life oldfag such as myself, 18 years ago is enough to be nostalgic about. Hell, there's no set date on how old something has to be to feel nostalgia for it; it can be something that happened months ago or even less. But I agree that I don't think anyone wants the series to continue too far, both because the series is about old games and because no one wants to see these people turn into middle agers. And who wants to be reminded of how video games have turned into DLC-fueled propaganda pieces anyway? Also,

Japanese-style arcades are starting to enter America. I live in a mid-size town in the South and we have a bona fide Japanese arcade chain in the local mall. You can drink in it but you can't smoke. It's nothing like those gay hipster "barcades" though. Tons of quality games with the stock changing every couple of months. It literally the only place I spend my money other than grocery stores and fastfood. At first the only downside was that there were a lot of niggers, but fortunately they stopped hanging out there for some reason. Unfortunately, I doubt this place will stay in business for more than a couple years. It's usually empty, although they get a decent-sized college/med student crowd on weekends.

 No.847732

>>847716

Unfortunately that place will probably flop simply because it's in a mall. Malls are glorified nigger hangouts and groids don't spend money on anything besides drugs and sneakers.

Funny you mention hipster barcades, there was one in my town for about a year. They head beat up machines for shit like Pac Man and Mortal Kombat, MK being $1 per credit because it was one of the only things there that wasn't shit. Everyone just went there to drink craft beer and eat wings anyway. The place went out of business because the owner was a lazy douche that opened "when he felt like it". I'm glad it died.

talked about the games in his manga and then asked for permission. Otherwise the manga wouldn't have gone on hiatus for a while and the anime wouldn't have been delayed for like 3 years because of SNK's copyright claim.

Also adding to the nostalgia are the subs. It;s pretty fitting that this of all things has fansubs.

That is completely wrong and I wish people would stop repeating it. Copyrights can't be lost that way. It's a lie made up to justify shitty business practices.

Even trademarks are incredibly difficult to lose. The only way to lose a trademark is through it becoming "generic" -- in other words people use your brand name to refer to competitors' products. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarks

As long as nobody starts using "Mario" to refer to all platformer games/characters, Nintendo don't have anything to worry about.

>Gaming became less about fun and more about profit or now politics.

There was once a time when our cultures were one and the same. It wasn't uncommon to think those who watch anime also play video games, watch idols, read SF, play VNs, learn military trivia, etc. The old school otaku were always together, shring their interests and passions. It's why a whole culture grew out of it. I remember back in the day people would call us "one of them" and it was a mark of pride for me. Now that Big Bang Theory and such popularized failed normalfags into shitting up our hobby, we've become segregated and no longer have a living culture. We no longer interact to spread and further our hobbies. This was the same in Japan. Toshio Okada talked about this change there about a decade ago.

Let me quote a few things from some articles I read once. While the author uses the shit-eating term "moe-otaku" to express the current era, it's a good read on the subject. I know this post will be a block of text, but I hope you read it anyway:

http://altjapan.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/07/already-dead.html

>Okada defines the otaku crowd he grew up with as a group of "individuals who chose to pursue childish hobbies as a means to emotionally and intellectually isolate themselves from society," defending their behavior as a form of rebellion and empowerment. According to Okada, this early generation of otaku weren't outcasts but rather noble outsiders, individuals who were more than willing to face public scorn rather than give up the things that were important to them. Essentially discriminated against by society at large, they had no choice but to circle their wagons and wall themselves off from it, like native Americans (yes, that is his parallel) forming reservations in an attempt to preserve their way of life. In other words, it wasn't a hobby, it was an cultural group, a tribe. History is rewritten by the victor, I suppose. For anyone familiar with the origins of the otaku, it's amusing to watch Okada use the otaku-driven development of "Japan cool" to recast a group of social misfits as iconoclastic rebels.

>In contrast, Okada takes the current generation of otaku to task for continuing to "ghettoize" themselves, retreating ever-deeper into individual virtual worlds when they encounter any sort of resistance to their interests. Where's the sense of pride, of camraderie? he wonders. He decries their inward focus, their passivity, their apparent lack of desire to learn about or interact with subcultures outside of their own tiny worldviews. (The last is a hallmark difference, at least in Okada's idealized view, between the moe-otaku and traditional old-school otaku, who actually forced themselves to partake of genres or titles they didn't particularly like in order to broaden their horizons.)

http://altjapan.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/05/better_stronger.html

>The internet has made it so easy to zero in on others with your own interests that we've raised a generation of nerds mired in their own tiny spheres of influence. Fans of a given genre use information technologies to surround themselves with like-minded people in impentrable cliques. The thought of a broader society beyond their own tiny subculture never occurs to them. Call it the "otaku singularity" worldview.

>It wasn't like this back in the golden age, they continue, thumping their glasses of shochu on the countertop for empahsis. Otaku of different stripes hung out together (thunk)! There was an exchange of ideas (thunk)! The military otaku and PC otaku and anime otaku and Gun-pla otaku all shared ideas, created things they wouldn't have been able to do on their own. It was like... like... an otaku utopia! That's why this new generation won't ever amount to anything (thunk)! And waitress, we need another bottle over here! Hey, anyone mind if I finish that yakitori?

As the direct descendants of the original otaku, this is why rule 7 is so damn important.

That's the thing. We on /a/ are the last pocket of the old ways, but we're shut off from the rest of the world due to the invading normalfags. We should be out there getting dirty looks from everyone and finding comrades. We should be embracing our embarrassment and living through our passions instead of hiding away from the failed scum who desecrate our hobbies. Being a nerd is now "cool" so everyone's doing an imitation and we're locking ourselves away and thus separating ourselves from each other. Remember that cons started as a group of enthusiasts who wanted to get together and have a little slice of our own world. Now all cons are overrun with failed normalfags who want to signal to each other about how cool they are.

In turn, this affects people who should be our rightful comrades in terrible ways. Everywhere you look now, except for on /a/, would-be comrades are just bitter and angry at everything and hates the hobbies they claim to enjoy because of the normalfag influence. This only further segregates us from each other to the point where now /a/ is the only place where we are left.

tl;dr purge the normalfag from our rightful clay. It's reconquista time.

 No.852344

>>852324

>We should be out there getting dirty looks from everyone and finding comrades.

The problem is you aren't going to get dirty looks from everyone these days, you're going to have wannabees sidling up to you and embarrassing you by vehemently claiming they're just like you when they're actually faggots. That's just the issue. Now that being a "nerd" has become cool there is no defiance in being a nerd, it's just another rung of the normalfag society ladder, just like you said.

The old ways won't work anymore. We can't go on the offensive because the moment you open the doors the enemy is going to rush into the fort and claim they're on your side while eating all the food and smearing shit on all the walls. What choice do we have but to hunker down and hope a natural calamity wipes out everyone outside?

This. Even if we don't do like we want and just slaughter them all in an edge fest, we can still go out there and purge them softly. The normalfag has a weakness: Their dependence on climbing the social ladder. They get embarrassed around us and try to push us out of their circles saying we're just an outlier when we're the real deal and they're the fakes. This is how they have almost successfully taken over our culture. If we could get enough /a/nons out there being themselves, the normalfags will realize they didn't want to enter our club, because what we do repulses and embarrasses them. We have dakis of our waifu, wotagei, NatSoc memorabilia, anisong karaoke. Anything with enough passion behind it repulses the normalfag. I've heard groans from them from people talking in broken Japanese to guests at cons or buying a visiting seiyuu a gift.

What they label as "cringe" is our weapon because it's the real deal and they can't handle it.

Thanks for the translation. It's even sadder when you know the proper name of the song: Houkago Di(e)stra(u)ction.

>Be Oono.

>Come from a rich but strict family.

>Go to school to study. popular because rich.

>Yet, nobody really knows about you or your hardships.

>Limo picks you up after school ends and takes you straight home.

>Forced to take strict afternoon classes at home with a mean tutor.

>Tutor is strict and scary. She was given total authority over your life by your absent parents.

>Toys? Watch TV, vidya? None of that. Can't even go outside on weekdays.

>The only thing you're allowed to do is studying and piano practice.

>Dinner time, lots of food but It's only you at the table.

>Have to bottle in sadness and loneliness.

>Have some more hardcore tutoring before getting sent to bed.

>Wake up early just so you can repeat the same schedule over and over.

>Old limo driver takes pity on you and secretly takes you to an arcade.

>It was so fun for you the driver makes it a habit to take you there.

>Meet classmate in the arcade, kind of rude but nice. likes vidya and loves talking about it.

>Become friends and spend the afternoon together playing in various arcades around town.

>As you spend time together, you develop a crush on friend.

>"So_happy.midi".

>Don't want to go back home, but you have to.

>You return home late, your tutor gets really mad and things get stricter.

>Tutoring got tougher but you still manage to meet friend and play.

>Out of nowhere, family is moving away because of dad's job.

>Going to be separated from the only real friend you ever had and crush, and there's nothing you can do about it.

>Day of departure.

>Your friend arrives at the airport minutes before your flight.

>As you bawl your eyes out, friend tries to console you and promises to wait for you.

>You move away and everything that made you happy is now out of reach.

>You don't know if you will ever meet your friend again and you're back to studying hell.

>Keep playing vidya in hopes that someday you two will reunite and go back to those happy times.

Man, being Oono is suffering.

This show is comfy as fuck, it made me want to rewatch the first 4 seasons of game center CX for the fifth time, i feel bad for hidaka though, any girl that shows that much interest in your hobby just so she can get closer to you is worth marrying, the poor girl bought a snes and a copy of final fight just to do some co-op with haruo, she considers every moment spent with him special, cherished a fucking can of soda he gave her, fantasized about being asked to go out with him, fuck she even went outside in her pajamas to bring him hot tea when the idiot was outside her house playing street fighter in the middle of a fucking blizzard, and the fucker didn't even had the decency to pause his game to drink it.

At least going for the mute autistic rich girl with anger issues instead of the endlessly patient cute blonde with large tits at least for her age makes perfect sense considering what kind of person the protagonist is: a shitter with an inflated ego, i can totally see him turning into the japanese version of low tier god.

To be fair, MC is probably literally gay and shows no interest in sexual interest in females. He's only interested in the autistic rich girl because she's better at video games than he is, and he sees her as a rival to live up to and some day beat.

Blondie has realized this, which is why she has been spending the last few years getting gud so she can laugh in his face like an ojou-sama after kicking his ass at every game he thinks he's good at. That seems to be the only way to get that faggot to even look at a girl.

My only big complaint is Oono, she's a shitty crossbreed between a Mary Sue, a TSUNdere and a kuudere.

Everything about her is off-putting, she can act like a total bitch and still face no consequences for her actions.

This is made even worse when comparing her to Hidaka, who is a well written love interest.

Oono is like a fat fly in a high quality soup, the soup is still good, but she drags down the quality.

It has been ages since I hated a character this much.

I adored the whole sequence of event surrounding him leaving for work from the hotel room, him wanting to support Oono, and having Oono wait for him to return him from work. It felt so wholesome; I'd go as far as saying that it gave me the same soul cleansing vibes that I got from watching Barakamon.

So it was AOTS right? I loved it to pieces. I don't know if people who aren't into video games would get as much out of it, but the story, characters and atmosphere are still great regardless. Extremely comfy and one of my favourite shows this year.
