Aside from the chronology of the devil may cry series being a pretty hodge-podge thing, the DMC anime was actually released a year before the release of DMC4 so there's really no reason to compare it thematically to the following events in DMC4.

Comparing it to how the alternative transitions go, (i.e. anime to video game) it really wasn't that terrible, especially compared to how incredibly bad some anime are if you actually watch a lot of it. Getting an action heavy series without relying on CG shortcuts or a massively bloated budget is also basically impossible for anything longer than a movie or a short set of OVAs. Getting an anime adaptation at all is already quite a stretch for a (comparatively) niche series, so it's kind of pointless to consider as a mishandling of a good original concept or existing manga/ln rather than looking at it as a tolerable piece of bonus material to the main series (i,e, the video games).

Considering how badly the main series got shafted, there's something worth complaining about there though.

I do not think the anime was meant to be action heavy to begin with its like slice of life but the protagonist hunts demons. Its mostly what Dante does when hes not on missions/the missions are not world threatening

The Bayonetta anime is even worse. The first action scene is a shotgun firing and then things exploding with a cut between the two. You can't even see Bayonetta holding it.

This was just a license cash grab by MADHOUSE and Capcom. Minimal effort and resources put in with the expectation that the fans will shell out on brand recognition. The same situation happened with Bayonetta, Blade of the Immortal, and Berserk 2016/2017 to name a few. You can usually tell by the first few minutes that its a waste of time. I dropped DMC after episode one.

DMC always felt like one of those IPs that was made in Japan but I feel that the Western audiences love it more than the Japanese

They tried to portray Dante as the then current "cool" character, A.K.A Sasuke Uchiha.

Honestly it's a good thing they didn't bother trying to animate any really crazy action scenes, because it would have been either some insufferable slideshow like that one Fate scene or just a mess of CG and bullshit cuts.
