Why did it take until fire-arms warfare for Japan to figure out how to line up shields and point them at the enemy? It's not like a lack of iron would impact shield prevalence that much.

Even when firearms became commonplace didn't they still use the big mobile cover type of shields? Japan almost never used the kind of handheld personal shield that was ubiquitous in most of the rest of the world, except for one time when their military was pretty much just copying the Chinese style.

I haven't been able to find a terribly convincing answer for this. Some people I've heard say it's because battles hinged more on an almost champion warfare type of combat between samurai, which was fairly ritualized, but I don't really buy that.

Yeah, it's pretty weird. One theory I heard is that it didn't mix well with the bows > polearm > sidearm equipment the samurai used but I dn'T understand why nobody would ever equip at least some footsoldiers with them. It's not like they are that expensive.

With crossbows there's a at least the Japanese climate but there's no reason nobody would ever use shields.

Basically all this current show's MC did was google military tactics and make some completely uninteresting alliances, basically by adopting girls he'll treat as family so he has plausible deniability every time they make advances and he pussies out. Absolutely nothing of interest, and no amount of interdimensional magic could be added to offset just the historical cringiness mentioned above, anyways.
