Even when firearms became commonplace didn't they still use the big mobile cover type of shields? Japan almost never used the kind of handheld personal shield that was ubiquitous in most of the rest of the world, except for one time when their military was pretty much just copying the Chinese style.
I haven't been able to find a terribly convincing answer for this. Some people I've heard say it's because battles hinged more on an almost champion warfare type of combat between samurai, which was fairly ritualized, but I don't really buy that.
