Original anime made by J.C. Staff and Mizukami Satoshi (Hoshi no Samidare, Spirit Circle).

The first episode is good, I really like the dynamic between Sensei, Ginko and Souya.

>Weird. Is this an actual crossover

No, it's an original anime. Mizukami did the entire story and the original character designs.

The Asahina figure is just a reference, but I hope that Planet With is a success since it might pave the way for a Hoshi no Samidare anime.

 No.840543

>>840541

For whatever reason, Mizukami doesn't seem to want a Hoshi no Samidare anime (or a Sengoku Youko one). Planet With was apparently designed by him from the ground up as an anime, so hopefully it will live up to his reputation.

This was weird enough to be fun, if they can maintain this level of fun weirdness I will keep watching. Though as this is JC Staff I don't have any expectation that this will turn out to be good, it might not be totally horrible. They've got me wondering who the 'good' side is at this point, it looks like the MC used to be friends with the other fighters but got shafted by them and is now out for revenge. So he might be something of a villain protagonist. The stuff about the UFOs causing people to have these weird sentimental visions is interesting, not expecting whatever drama comes of this to be very good but hopefully the ride will be enjoyable while it lasts.

 No.840875

>>840843

This. I vaguely recall some anime in the past trying it, and it looked weird as hell. The problem with the lower frame rate on the 3DCG in anime is they usually seem to just apply a uniform framerate reduction, instead of taking the time to choose which frames to preserve and which to skip, because this would take more time, even though it would lead to visuals that fit in much better with 2D animation. But the whole point of 3DCG is to save time/money, so a uniform reduction is quicker and cheaper than picking each frame individually by hand.

>>840875

For all the grips with 3D, I think they are making good progress in making it palatable.

 No.840899

>>840843

You don't even need to increase the framerate you just need to make it integrated it with the rest of the scene. Have proper keyframes instead of rendering an animation out at fixed rate with no consideration of which actual frames will be seen; hand tweak for proper smears or at the very least replicate shutter blur to stop it being a fucking eyesore.

 No.840909

>>840875

>But the whole point of 3DCG is to save time/money

The point of 3D is that there aren't enough good 2D animators.

3D animators don't work for pocket change, as long as it isn't done by complete amateurs it will be as expensive or more expensive than 2D.

There's also the fact that 2D animation is cheap, really cheap. The Bamboo Blade leak is the only good source of information for the cost of 2D animation.

Key animation (1,200,000) + tween frames (840000) + finishing (798,000) for a total of 2,838,000 yen per episode.

http://bakudon.net/news/2008/02/27/financials-heaven-hell-reality-three-looks-at-the-business-of-animation-production-part-3-an-examination-of-the-production-costs-of-bamboo-blade

With the current exchange rate this is 25689$. I didn't list minor costs like color coordination (70000) since these costs would also exist in a 3D anime.

CG (without special effects) is listed as 100,000 yen per episode, and Bamboo Blade barely used any CG.

> The problem with the lower frame rate on the 3DCG in anime is they usually seem to just apply a uniform framerate reduction, instead of taking the time to choose which frames to preserve and which to skip, because this would take more time, even though it would lead to visuals that fit in much better with 2D animation.

Anime is usually animated in 2's or 3's, and the rate with which things are animated varies during the episode.

Like you said, choosing frames by hand would fit much better with 2D animation, but normally this isn't an option with the amount of money studios get for an anime.

Plenty of aburd-esque anime that are played straight in terms of direction and plot. It's the natural progression of almost any genre in any medium to become self-aware and start playing with the audience's established concepts about the conventions of said genre, for better or worse. It's not really a 'deconstruction', if that word really does mean anything, so I suppose it's the rough equivalent of affixing the 'post-' prefix to a genre or style in music and visual arts.

The seven (now six) opponents of the main character believe they are protecting earth from invaders.

The main character and his allies are a faction of Nebula, the "invading" force - the Pacifist faction. Nebula believes that humanity is developing the power to fight on the spacefaring scale and wants to curb that. The two factions disagree on how: Pacifists want to take the power away and let humanity try again for a more peaceful option while Sealing Faction (the big weird things) want to lock humanity's progress away period. So the main character fights these mech-using 'heroes' and takes away their power sources.

There's an implication in the first episode that if the Sealing Faction is allowed its way humanity will be trapped in a lotus-eater-machine esque Matrix existence, so the 'heroes' of course want to prevent that. The MC wants revenge for some unexplained conflict some time ago, and he's a soldier of the Pacifist faction besides, so he wants to fight the 'heroes'.

This is literally all spelled out for you by dialogue. The fact that you can't figure any of it out means you must be comically and tragically retarded.

The show is really ugly. I'm only one episode in so far, but that flying object was both lolsorandom and just plain fucking ugly. The only thing in the show that isn't ugly is the maid, who is wonderful and I want to do all sorts of things to her and her hair. Something about the main character's hot pink eyes disturbs me. The Noivern mecha that he had indicates that this is a Pokemon crossover, right? The other mechas were also ugly, and had far too many flashy lights.

It relies far too much on that typical Japanese storytelling style where random shit happening with no explanation is confused for good writing and depth. Why does he live with a seaweed maid and an ugly CGI cat? Even assuming the whole traffic accident story is true, I don't think that's how orphans are dealt with. Why does no one care that he lives with the ugly CGI cat? The rest of the setting is obviously a normal high school setting and the flying objects and mecha sentai faggots were treated as completely unfitting, so why does the humanoid cat not raise any eyebrows? Why does the MC want to eat meat, yet the seaweed force him to stay on a soyboy diet? The not-seaweed-maid-therefore-not-interesting girl didn't have meat either; was that a coincidence or does the world just have meat for some reason? The show gives you scenes that you don't have the information to make sense of yet, then presumably drip feeds you the explanations which may or may not be meant to be metaphorical. Seeing scenes that are supposed to be emotional, like the main character's rage or the random flashbacks without any context to them is just weak. It's bad storytelling.

I want more maid and less lolsorandom and insufficient context.

On a side note, the show seems extremely unpopular because it has essentially no fanart at all. Such a waste of a good maid.

I appreciate that they gave the wonderful, perfect green maid more screen time, but also disappointed because she really didn't do anything.

By the way, this show has really weird sound effects. It's like they're trying to get in on the Inception noise bandwagon years late or something.

I think it's intentional, lowered the volume of everything in it to make the loud effects stand out.

Yes, but more or less just standing in there is not a very interesting action, nor does it show her off well.

I hope it doesn't turn into a show about how eating meat is bad and you should stop doing it in order to become peaceful.

At this point I'm almost sure this is going to be my AotS.

These last episodes been consistently great, with Norio Wakamoto and Rikiya Koyama yelling at each other in the previous one, the Paradise guy dropping his unflappable facade in this one and everyone teaming up to forgive the dragon by kicking his ass.

Just need them to hold up the quality and high grade gouda in the home stretch.

Jesus christ she is a hazard to any male in the room. I almost feel bad for him that he already hooked up with glasses. Speaking of glasses, it was pretty silly that she is now some sort of psychic genius and takes part in the battle.

There better be porn of pink now. The show is terribly unpopular with fan artists for some reason despite being good and having good designs.

It was a really good show, interesting to see such a big span of events covered in a single cour without abysmal pacing issues. I liked that the plot always delivered surprises and people generally reacted very reasonably to events. The way the paradise guy was used in the end was also nice, a fairly restrained deus ex machina, although megane finding them right away through yet another deus ex machina was starting to push it, but I guess you might as well go all the way with the happy end.

The questionable CG was the biggest downside. The actual fights were good, I had no issues with the odd kigurumi designs, but the mechs were just all over the place, even by the end I could barely tell who was in which one aside from the two mains.

They did made the mechs have different energy colors, though couldn't tell what animal Inaba's friend was supposed to represent.

Megane finding Souya kinda made sense, as Nebula gives so much insistence to love her power worked especially better for Souya.

>>863371

Their mechs were all animal based like their names. The other Judo girl was bear.

Sensei was an ally of justice done right: He stuck to his guns from start to end and managed to prove his point by saving everyone.

Childhood's End - Anime Edition managed to deliver until the very end, definitively my AotS.

 No.863536

I liked it, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as Mizukami's other major works. The pacing seemed weird, I guess because he's not used to writing with the restrictions that come with a single cour anime. It also felt more preachy than his other stuff to me. The CG was still probably my biggest problem, as it was bad even for anime standards and took me out of it multiple times. The designs weren't even that complicated compared to most other mecha shows, I just wish Mizukami could have gotten a better studio than JC Staff for his big break.

I'll probably read through the manga when it ends, but from what I understand it's pretty much just Mizukami's cleaned up storyboards so I imagine it will be the exact same. At least it has his great art instead of the terrible CG.

Ginko is best girl.

 No.863559

>>863536

I agree completely. I just hope this can lead to some of his other work getting an anime. It's really weird for this to be his first anime adaptation.

 No.863656

>>863559

Apparently Mizukami himself is the one that doesn't want his other works animated (I don't really know the reason besides I think "They wouldn't translate well enough", and I have no source to back this up, so take it with a pound of salt). That's why he made Planet With: He intended for it to be an anime from the very start, and that's why he let it be animated as opposed to Hoshi no Samidare, Spirit Circle, etc.

 No.863694

>>863656

I'd believe it. The only one they'd have a chance of doing justice is Spirit Circle.

 No.863783

I liked it but I think it suffers at around the middle half. We get this short middle arc battling the remnants and it feels so out of place. Feels like it should have flowed more smoothly instead of feeling like a bump to the conclusion. I wished the girl learned the truth in a different way instead of the boy just telling her out of the blue and she immediately accepts it.

2 episodes for the time skip conclusion could have worked better if they had an extra episode to show the passage between those 5 years beforehand. To show is resolve of loving earth and letting go of his revenge. Also, to help show the message he was getting at that was very poignant. How time makes people lose interest in tragedy and go about their daily lives if their isn't constant news about it. That kind of normalization is very interesting and true take of humanity.

Other than those complaints, I think it was a very solid show and worth the watch.

 No.863807

>>863783

Yeah, the part between Souya defeating Takashi and the time skip was definitely the weakest. I wish they had just wrapped up Benika's story before that fight.

 No.863876

The show was good, but the last episode felt too by the numbers. Especially the two back to back convenient plot saves at the end. An epilogue would have been nice, too.
