The problem isn't that the internet as it was has been eliminated. It's that it grew to encompass everything you know. This is exactly the future predicted in SEL. You can no longer tell the difference between the real world and the world of the internet. It all meshes together and things that happen in one place have real world effects. Even now, more devices are being hooked up. It won't be long until someone is literally murdered over the internet due to this. Hell, some people have made their entire careers online. Maybe you can get away from it if you go to an island somewhere with no connections or satellite signals.

To be fair, he's not entirely wrong even if his post is hyperbole. The blending of the two cultures is a hot topic in certain circles, particularly Japanese nationalists/anti-globalists, and some people are pretty touchy about the risk of losing Japan's national identity the more westernized they become. Everything from the different clothes and housing styles to celebrating holidays that aren't theirs and have no real history in the country. Even the language is a mix of nip and gairaigo so it's hard to avoid western culture creeping in.
No.840821

That's one thing, saying they're the same isn't hyperbole, it's just retarded.
Japanese culture is still very much present in the attitudes of the people, especially when it comes to things like social interaction and workplace politics, and I'd say that dictates where the society is going more than just the purely aesthetic aspects like clothing and architecture, which are much more readily subject to change and adaptation over time anyway. Japan seems to be good at adapting western ideas and aesthetics and putting their own unique twist to make them better or more palatable to their existing sensibilities rather than just lifting them wholesale like a lot of countries with a weak culture do.
No.840823

Perhaps it should also be clarified that the poster is probably talking about the more traditional side of Japan rather than its modern culture.
>Japan seems to be good at adapting western ideas and aesthetics and putting their own unique twist to make them better or more palatable to their existing sensibilities rather than just lifting them wholesale like a lot of countries with a weak culture do.

I always see the only remaining parts of their culture they practice to be entirely superficial. Breathe and stimulate your lymphatic system. Your body cleanses itself by breathing and physical movement.
Eat more water rich vegetables and cut down on alcohol/coffee.
Do this and you will experience energy you never thought possible because you are conditioning your cells to be more active in the same manner you get a tan by consistently exposing yourself to sun.

But that's not what I said, retard. The core of Japanese culture revolves around western socioeconomic practices. All the other stuff is just decoration. At its core, Japanese society is functionally no different from western society. Hell, even then, more Japense are having Christian weddings than ever, live in western-style houses, and dress like westerners. They imitate western musical sounds, and produce stories with concepts like romantic love, which is something introduced from the west. Face it, America gangbanged Japan into copying our culture from the post-war period. It may seem a bit different, but that difference is only superficial.

There are fundamental cultural differences between Japan and the west that go deeper than any of the shit you describe, and even those traits inherited from the west are usually changed in the process. Japan isn't the same as it was before the war, but the changes are mostly the ones owed to modernization and technological evolution that we see all around the developed world, rather than specifically the US's influence.
If you genuinely think there isn't a fundamental difference in Japanese and western, specifically American "culture", you just haven't looked hard enough.

>shame and saving face
We get these phrases from East Asian culture, but that's only because we never bothered to codify it. People naturally behave differently in different situations, and both individuals and organizations are forced to maintain a public image. Ever see a company CEO step down because he did something that would bring shame to the company? That's it.
>appreciation for tradition and traditional values
You pretend that's universal. It's not. Nor, in fact, is it entirely absent in the west - You go to areas of the Bible Belt, to a Tejano family in Texas, and so forth, you find people who still maintain their traditions. Or the Amish. There's also certain western traditions that you simply take for granted, as a westerner, and don't even consider to be traditions.
>downplayed importance of the individual as opposed to the whole
This is actually fairly accurate, but it's something that's becoming increasingly less dramatic. There's a lot of cultural pushback in Japan against collectivism, and in favor of individualism, as a result of exposure to western ideology. You'd be retarded to say it's as strong now as it was 20-30 years ago.
>high value placed on science and education
Pretty much everyone who isn't black puts value in those things here, as well. The problem isn't what people want, but what the governing bodies want. Education is ran poorly here, because of corporate interests. The fact that home-schooling and private education are becoming increasingly common as the public system deteriorates should evidence people's actual feelings. Further, in some ways, education is over-valued - College degrees or high school diplomas are required for jobs where none of that information is in the least bit relevant to actually completing the task.
>long history of cultural development mostly unperturbed by negative outside influences
First, this isn't a fundamental cultural difference. Second - This is no longer true, and hasn't been since WWII.
>racial and cultural homogeneity
This is true. Though I would stress that saying there is only a single Japanese culture is also false - There are plenty of sub-cultures, some historical, some modern. It's ignorant to boil an entire nation down to a single culture, especially one that old and that populated. Though, I would add the same applies to the west - There are at least six distinct culturally distinct geographic regions in the United States alone.
There is a difference between culture, but core values are far more similar now than 20 years, 40 years, 80 years, or 160 years ago. Japan didn't freeze itself in time, nor is it actively trying to - It takes in what's beneficial, and pushes out what isn't. The push-back against collectivism and adoption of the market economy result from the fact that these are literally superior in every way for remaining competitive.
As for Lain - It's pre-social media online culture. If you to 2chan, 8chan, or cheekibreekichan, you'll see a shitload of things in common. All? No. But more than, say, the actual bridge between cultures, or even the bridge between the source site and its social media equivalent (in the case of the west).

America created anime, but with nukes. Anime takes a lot of ideas and cues about germanic ideals from around the ww2 times.
Pretty much every pure anime girl is represented as a germanic maiden down to the most minute of details.
What we're watching is best described as "the radioactive admixture of germanic and japanese ideals in visual form". Before Japan really developed its style, the visuals of anime were basically that of western animation of the era, but they didn't look like american animation. They were more like something central european.

I just finished it, and while I didn't hate it, I can't help but agree. It had some very interesting themes: the internet as a real world, the exchange of information as a form of life in itself, the intersection between /tech/ and /fringe/. None of this stuff was truly elaborated though. It seemed like these ideas were mainly used for their aesthetic quality. I'm open to the possibility that I'm just a dumb fuck because there was much I didn't understand. Why did everyone love Lain? Why did she decide to prevent the merging of reality and the wired? Why did her pretend sister go insane? What did the scene with Lain talking to her dad in the sky mean?

It's been many years since I watched it, but Lain is isn't the manifestation of the internet. She is the opposite of "manifestation". She is a personification of something without a solid body, even her old body isn't entirely real.
Towards the end, when her real body dissolved completely she only lives in the moments when someone remembers her. That's why she constanty relives the moment entering school, or when her father enters her room. The moments get more and more distorted as the memories fade/are effected by emotion. Only after her battle with god does she underatand that her personality is who she is.
At least that's how I interpreted it. It's been too many years for me to properly remember. I am going to have to watch it again.

I liked Lain when I first watched it, but the sad truth of the matter is that the show has lost very much of its appeal since the internet has evolved into something which is no longer connected via mutual hyperlinks. Back then, there still where pages which you plainly could not find unless you knew the exact pages directing to them, making the entire thing a bit of a labyrinth (people who put up a homepage - if anyone remembers what that means - and got frequent requests by visitors to put up links to their respective one will understand the meaning of this).
Meanwhile, today's internet is no longer a maze, but a platform where automated search engines will find literally anything you seek in less than second, barring stuff such as cheese pizza or somesuch that you should not seek unless you want to treat the FBI to some free drinks.
Lain represented the mystery element of the early internet. Something of which people did not really think where it would lead them too. With the advent of Web 2.0 and especially the entire social media bullshit - stuff which allowed everyone and his mom to access the net, as opposed the cryptic group of social outcasts that it housed before - this secret has been lost forever. At the very fucking best, the closest thing you still can get to this experience is some ARG website, and even then, it probably is just an elaborate advertising stunt from your local soft drink company.
