Gonna be honest here. I dropped this show after 3 episodes. Characterization felt sloppy and the show gave off a dull impression in general (also the mechs with eyes and mouths were a bit too much for me). Is it worth picking back up for the alleged trainwreck or would I be better off not wasting my time?

I watched the first episode and already felt burnt out. Why does every Studio Trigger show look the same? The color always feels so under-saturated. I've mostly been watching Th8a break down each episode and that's been a far more enjoyable experience to me than I'd have actually watching it.

Oh yeah, I loved seeing him so optimistic earlier on about a good ending, then this gets flipped onto his plate and you could see the tone shift. It's like dragging his soul out. If you've preened the comments he already watched Made in Abyss episode 10 and he sounds remarkably optimistic for that, at least in terms of quality not content - so I imagine it'll be a good picker up.
Hearing him have to go on a diatribe about Deus Ex Machina and why it's such a bad thing, why aliens are incredibly contrived and seriously hurt the work is just a strong reminder for me to not watch Trigger.
No.837492
Every trigger show is the same. Fantastic start, great art style, good colors. Everything is nice and good and then the series slowly/quickly goes down hill until whats left is unwatchable.
Almost every Trigger show is polarizing and outside of Reddit there's never a consensus of whether or not one of their shows is bad. People either love or hate their shows.
No.837494
>>837492
Only sane post, even after dozens of DiTF threads.
It's a shame, the start was really fresh and promising. I'm of the opinion that the Kokoro - Futoshi - Mitsuru triangle greatly worsened the show, the exposition these characters received sucked up a lot of precious time, when it could have been used for better world building and/or given to characters that actually needed exposition, like Zorome - Miku - Goro - Ikuno, hell, even Zero Tsu and Hiro needed it.
tl.dr DiTF would have been 10 times better without Cuckoro and Fatoshi, other girls could have perfectly fulfilled the "pregnant woman" role.

Luluco, Inferno Cop, and the LWA movies were the only things I've really enjoyed by them, personally. Short bursts of high energy seem to be their thing; they don't have the collective coordination or attention span to keep it under control for long periods of time. They did a good job with Gurren Lagann, but I guess who or whatever resources they had to keep pacing on track couldn't make the transition from Gainax.
I almost feel like Franxx would have been a lot better if it had tried to maintain the spirit of TTGL rather than try to present itself as a super serious drama exploring issues that are teen issues. Then again, Kill la Kill did try to do that, and that ended up doing exactly what >>837492 described, as well. What happens that causes Trigger to just shit the bed like that so consistently?
No.837501
>>837492
This shows problem is that it did not know what it wanted to be. Almost all the worldbuilding and developments were pointless because of the "LOL, ALIENS WERE THE ENEMY ALL ALONG AND KLAXOSAURS ARE GOOD GUYS" plot twist. Even the character relationship building went nowhere. Kokoro and Mitsuru got mindwiped after many episodes of buildup, Fatoshi got cucked and forgotten, Goro and Ikuno got shot down and made background characters, Ichigo is just a shitty mess of a character, and Hiro and Zero Twos relationship boiled down to "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, KISS KISS HUG HUG" every scene before she became a vegetable. And now the series is going to presumably end in a giant space battle. At this point I hope they all fucking die up there. Fuck this show.
No.837516
How exactly are they planning on making "more soil" from the birdcage? What the fuck does it mean that the soil is "devoid of life"? Just some minerals and water and a plan will grow literally anywhere, fuck even matt damon grew potatoes on mars. Also, are they planning on living on lettuce only? They're all gonna die of malnutrition.
And the food had to come from somewhere within the moving cities, is there no way to boot up the old system? Did they even try? Nope, seems like they went straight to being fucktard farmers.

I feel like the problem with Trigger shows is that everyone projects what they want to see on the show before the point of the show reveals itself. Take LWA for example. People who wanted a slice of life comedy with schoolgirls learning how to be witches plus western cartoon motifs were disappointed when the plot of the show took off. The people who didn't like the onset of the show then enjoyed the plot that revealed itself. Upon rewatching it I've come to enjoy the show as a whole when I originally didn't like the start.
After that I remembered how I felt the same way with Kill La Kill except with an inverse problem; instead, I liked the shonen fight of the week plus comedy antics and not so much the plot. With the game announced (which might be pointless seeing who the real developer is) I rewatched the show expecting to hate it. Instead, I enjoyed it far more than I originally did. I feel really strange even saying this but the show is almost flawless in a way. I kinda hope that what we got from it isn't disappearing from anime altogether. I was kinda tempted to start a thread about it, moreso about the aforementioned sentiment, but I have a gut feeling I'll be alone trying to explain my reaction.
With this, LWA, and Franxx, I'm starting to think that no one truly understands Trigger, including myself. I don't feel as if they truly made an overall bad show yet. And that the real pattern can only be drawn on a chart.
> A new Trigger show has debuted! Did you enjoy the beginning? If Yes, proceed to next line. If No, skip to the line after next.
< The plot has revealed itself and you find it disappointing and confusing. You miss what you felt was the direction of the show.
> The plot has revealed itself and you find it to be engaging and interesting. You wonder why the show wasn't just all this.
Time Skip
> You are rewatching a Trigger show you had mixed feelings about. You enjoyed it as a whole and wonder when season 2 is coming.
Unless their studio makes any major changes I think this will be the case with them for who knows how long.

I did like Kill La Kill, Luluco and even LWA was solid. But one thing everyone is missing is that it's the whole waifu thing that has really been making the show good but outside of it without her I have the feeling the show is weaker than it is. I think it's alright to have waifu but it needs a good cast or maybe a smaller cast if you are not going to focus on character building with them. Because the more you have the more you will need to add some character development. Otherwise you have another Bleach on your hands.

(Episode 15) The ONLY character she has is that she really liked Hiro as a kid, and that she's now currently confused by her feelings. Both of those apply to EVERY OTHER FUCKING MEMBER OF SQUAD 13, she is not unique in the slightest. She has no character. She's a cardboard cutout.

I meant the same in the sense they're all visually dull with very samey looking character designs and really muted colors. Plenty of directors shift style and experiment with different looks with a lot of success. Now that I think about, the anime would have really gained consistence from having one or two antagonists with an actual personality and presence, instead of all them being emotionless mob enemies like the klaxosaurs were, episode after episode.
And no, the 9's were introduced later, and besides, they aren't antagonists, just annoying faggots.
And once again, no, Klaxohime can't be considered an antagonists by the time she was introduced, when it was clear APE were the shitters, besides, she's just a 60 million year old, smelly hikikomori.

My theory is that normalfags have an inbuilt filter, that will block out all "echi" stuff if the show is popular, and thus they have to watch. It would explain why they had no problem watching Kill La Kill, or Konosuba(where a sixteen year old bathed together with a thirteen year old). They could also see it as being ironic, as in "l o l japan is weird, amiright, tentacle porn, lolis, panti shots", joke around with their friends pals, about how japanese this show is and how much they like it, because it's good popular. Later, they will go on Facebook and complain about how a politician, once said in private that he could grab any girl he wanted, by the pussy, and that he should be impeached.

There's a difference between normalfag weebs and reddit/tumblr weebs. Normalfags don't watch ecchi shows because they don't watch anything outside of shounen, evangelion, maybe a more tame SoL with a good reputation like Azumanga and flavour of the month shows like Franxx is or KLK was at the time. Reddit/tumblr weebs are the ones who manage the feat of scratching the surface of seasonal anime, so they're the ones watching Franxx. They're more of a mixed bag in that many of them don't mind ecchi but there's also hardcore leftist zombies mixed in who will relentlessly screech about it given an opportunity, but by and large most of them accept it under the "haha wow japan is so crazy what a bunch of weird sex perverts amirite".

Wait a moment, if their number is just how close they are to the Klaux Princes(01) and all of them are just clones of ZeroTwo, why didn't APE just have an army of nines or tens at most, why did they have to muddle their ranks with those in the order of hundreds? Did the tens take longer to produce/train, where they more unpredictable, I mean the nines are extremely loyal to Papa, so why did they bother producing someone like Mitsuru with code 326, when they could instead have Hiros(016). Considering there were at least two Nanas(code 007) we know they can have several copies with the same number, so again why didn't they have an army of 02s as well, if all they wanted was to bring a klaux clone to pilot the giant robot, what if ZeroTwo died in battle, then what was APE going to do? Send the gay community to pilot the robot, oh wait only she and the princess can open the door to the robot, so why didn't they make several 02s?
Also if Nana and Hachi became adults, albeit by stopping their puberty(?) why didn't they just tell the children, that yes they CAN become adults, why are the nines dying of the AIDS virus, if Nana and Hachi are fine, are they hitting puberty, and need to be castrated, in order to stop the cancer? Was the OniAIDS from the first few episodes, which still HASN'T BEEN EXPLAINED, Hiro entering puberty? What did that one guy from the suicide squad mean by "He probably doesn't know"? Know what, that they can become adults, that some of them do survive the war and become caretakers for the next generation? Did the suicide squad not know about this, then what did they know, and squad 13 didn't, that they can be ordered to Papa Achbar at any moment?

Again why didn't APE just create an army of Ichigos, Goros and Hiros, instead of also having Mitsurus, the anime says that the lower your number, the better you are, so why can't they have just tens? Why did they make a single clone of ZeroTsu, and not an army of them, instead of making clones of clones(the nines)? What would have happened if ZeroTsu died? Who would open the door to pilot the robot? How did APE infect the robot, if it sealed?

The only thing that is even remotely indicative of perhaps some attempt at depth is the kino black bars, and it's a visual thing, not plot or character related.

>Basic symbolism is not trying to be deep
You're looking at it the opposite way. You assume that just because the symbolism is basic, it was not trying to be deep. I, and presumably the others that accuse the show of being wannabe deep shit, think that they were trying to be deep, but their attempt was so bad that it only resulted in basic symbolism. This can be inferred from the way they handle the basic symbolism. The entirety of the first episode was revolving about that one shitty metaphor and they were constantly repeating it in dramatic tone, while showing fancy scenes to go with it. If the intent was not to appear deep and thought provoking, then what did they do this for? What was the intent of those scenes?
>out to ruin everyone's fun since day fucking one
I thought it was a shit anime from day fucking one. The first episode in particular was really bad, then it was dragging its feet, had a few okay episodes, then it was back to being shit, and that's when I dropped it. I'm glad that Ikuno got a somewhat happy ending, even if she blasted most of her life away. She even ended up with punished Naomi, who I feared the show had forgotten until last episode. I just wish they had more time together.
Goro is the bestbro to the end and even get's to be a cool adventurer. I'm also glad that Futoshi finds a wife and the true calling of his life: creating more food. Nice moustache.
To sum it up, the beginning was great and the end was alright but there's too much stuff in these 24 episodes that didn't entertain me that much. I'd rewatch pretty much any other Trigger show but I'm not sure if I'll ever rewatch this one.
lastly, I really want to know how much of the script was re-written. maybe there are some other parts that I just didn't notice but it's really obvious in the "rapid aging" plotline. It get's hinted at twice, in the scene with that other team and that bathing scene of Miku, but only really get's mentioned this episode as "I'm glad Ikuno managed to cure it!". It just seems to me like it was planned as a bigger plot point but then dropped for some reason.

Also this series has no speed of light. Their prayers reached pretty fast and the light from VIRM base exploding appeared immediately on earth. How fucking close are they? Should be a few light years away at least since they took a warp gate and traveled for 2 years. At least when 02 was being hurt the space battle it was only from the distance to Mars.
And by the time their souls reach Earth there's a futuristic civilization and the sapling by the stone 02 has grown to be a few hundred years old. It takes light no time but souls have to travel for that long? What the fuck is the velocity of an average soul?

Yes, they did other stuff besides these, but these are the most famous ones. Yes they are formed from former members of Gainax, but do you actually think the average normalfag knows this?
The anime, just had a successful marketing campaign that generated a lot of hype, that even the normalfag would watch. You don't need even need to catch all of them, if one or two guys in a group of friends wanna watch this new anime called KLK, the other guys who just have a passing interest in anime, will also watch just to be cool/have something to discuss, and they will just pretend to like it, they might not even realize that they don't like it.
In a way it's the same with some of us, who watched DitF, even though we knew it was shit, just to discuss the anime on this forum.

LWA? You mean the anime where the main character is a egotistical, evil bitch that learns absolutely nothing and only succeeds because the plot dictates it? Her interaction with most characters is pretty much throwing herself at them and fucking something up for them or breaking their stuff, being told to fuck off, and then continuing to bother them until she gets what she wants. She never learns to not be a horrible bitch that breaks others' possessions simply because she has a massive ego. She never actually learns anything, and it's even acknowledged in the trial about patience (but bringing attention to a flaw doesn't mean that it isn't a flaw).

The episode where she almost convinces lotte to kill herself was a bit much. I still think its pretty bold for trigger to make an all ages show where the main character is both the villain and the antagonist. When she psychologically tormented the headmastet by bringing her father back from the dead and commanded it to tell her how much of a failure she was, that was a bit unnerving.
Hopefully we get a season 2 that explores more of the villain-hero dynamic from a different perspective. Like, now that magic is more or less back, she conspires to cause international terror with the magitech of croix's lost labs. And by the end it backfires spectacularly and a new witch hunt has begun. And lotte kills herself.

>no-tension
That was my problem with the series overall and why I dropped it. Isekai in general lack tension because their MCs tend to be way too OP, add that to shitty worldbuilding (if we're falling into another universe it should be an interesting one, not a generic fantasy setting based off the last MMO the author played), and you get a story that's bland, dull, and has a hard time holding the audience's attention.

I’m glad this show is over. Not because of the show itself, but because so many crazed anime “fans” can now stop projecting what *they* wanted the show to do, onto the show itself. I’ve read people wanting their preferred sexual politics to be displayed by the show; people wanting mecha-only endings; people bitching about aliens being behind it all; people complaining about this or that pairing of characters; people ticked off about the butt-handles.
Now pick one of the shows from the new season, and obsess about *that* one for three months.

To be honest the animation quality doesn't suck.
But the rest does.
The cast is barely anything above stereotypes, and the plot-line "they get separated but they manage to get together again" is so overtly abused that it now has it's own IDF.
The last episode does improve the anime quite a bit, but the episodes before were so bad that it could not save it.
The aliens VS rock monsters super galactic important war that appears outta nowhere is just awful.
And what remains to say about the space portal that cannot by the rest of the cast ?
Why the fuck place it on mars and not somewhere more close and useful ? And what powers this thing ?
Two years travel, instant light to earth and the rock monster come back in a few days.
The upgrades issue is just an additional drop in the bucket.
The rock monsters giving a shit about humans suddenly, even sacrificing themselves for them, after having human murdering them and abusing them for DECADES.
And Why put the two fucking adults in the ship ? What do they bring ?
How the fuck can you explain the kids needing some adult guidance after all the things they have been through ?
Why could the rock monster just not come and say :
"Hello please stop abusing us, otherwise WAR and PS : SPACE ALIENS GHOSTS ARE CONTROLLING YOU, and are OKAY WITH BLOWING THE EARTH UP!"
Why did the klaxosaursonly go so slowly and weakly against humans ? Especially after they had defeated multiple Klaxosaurs ?
Why not nuke them properly and then go to war against space aliens ?
The thing that remains to hope is for this kind of plot development to never be used again.
Otherwise this anime deserves some alloha snackbar edits, be it just for the amount of useless suicide blasts of throw away characters.

DITF's story arcs in a nutshell
Green = Great
Blue = Still pretty good
Red = Everything's gone to shit
I was legitimately LOVING this anime early on and even in the slower paced episodes it had some moments I love(Episodes 7 and 8 I actually really enjoyed) but after around Ep 19 it just nosed dived fast.
Hell, with the final story arc pretty much throwing all previous worldbuilding to the wind what exactly even was the point of Episode 10 in hindsight?
No.841940

I think it was supposed to be Zorome's arc or some shit like that, in that he idolized the adults and when he saw how boring their lives were, he realized they aren't all that cool. Though he still goes "nu-uh Papa is awesome" for eight more episodes.
No.841965
>>841940
Thats the thing he doesn't develop whatsoever from that episode. I enjoyed this episode at the time because of the interesting worldbuilding it was setting up. It was a bit of a peek behind the curtain and building up the world for future plots.
Except as we all know the mess that was in the final arc of the show pretty much made it entirely pointless. We never find out why there was such a strong connection between that old woman and Zorome, outside of a brief cameo appearance in Episode 15 she never is even mentioned again, the stigma she and the other adults had with the parasites is never explained or expanded, the line that one guard has about the kids being victims in all this too isnt ever explored, Zorome doesn't develop whatsoever from this episode and in the end what was the point of any of this? All the adults get zapped by VIRM in Episode 20 anyway without any of this mattering or factoring in. Zorome doesn't develop from this at all and in fact at the end he states he eventually forgot about the old woman all together(although how is he giving this future narration if he forgot?) just that his nightmares stopped...nightmares that were introduced and only ever mentioned in this episode.
Like I said I liked this episode at the time but in hindsight looking back what was its purpose? Episode 9 had strong Goro and Ichigo development(Probably the only actual development of their relationship in the entire series til Ep 24) and Episode 11 had the partner swap. You can literally skip it and go from Episode 9 to Episode 11 and lose nothing.

Skipping through random frames of the episode I think it was also about what means to be a partner and perhaps Zorome respects Miku more, maybe?
Anyway, another bullshit thing is when he asks if he can become an adult, and she says "Out of the question. After all, you are..." and then the guards came, because they can become adults like with Hachi and Hana. I think the fact that the caretakers used to be parasites, was something introduces late in the writing process, and they didn't think how it would affect the themes and dialog of the rest of the series, I sperged about this in other posts ITT, so I will stop here.

It's like watching Evangelion but it's not ex-Christian-Atheism, nihilism, or faggotry. Don't get me wrong; Darling is not Christian in it's outlook or it's philosophy. It's definitely rooted in Japanese traditional beliefs and calls for a return to what makes Japan (or any nation for that matter) prosperous. That's why Darling managed to do in 24 episodes what NGE couldn't do in it's series or the movies. If you disagree then you really don't get this show at all, it's telling us with some symbolism what is wrong with our current world and what we can do to fix it, while NGE was pure nihilist bullshit. HINT: the enemy is space jews.
