What I don't get is this and the supposed good fortune OTF are supposed to bring. Given the mysticism, I am thinking the "good fortune" is the avoidance of a catastrophe which, to the outside world, would just look like shit luck with earthquakes. What I don't get is why they don't just kill it and avoid this 74 year old cycle completely, especially given that the method to avoid it seems very unreliable (relying on young girls to not want dick). The OTFs have been shown to be susceptible to fatigue, so it's likely they can be killed. So just nuke the damn thing when it wakes up and be done with it.

I agree. I think it would have been better if it ended on a "I'm sure she'll be back one day" note. Should have ended with Babyface making the trip to the sacrifice site, saying that last line, and we got a shot of him hopefully looking at the sunny sky or something.

Exactly! Either that, or they were last-minute additions/ changes, and they literally didn't have the time to do it properly. My bet is on the latter. It just didn't match in with the rest of the episode (let alone the show) in any way, neither artistically or thematically. Either way, if I were to rewatch this and I'm bound to, since it was easily one of the best anime to come out in recent years otherwise, in my opinion, I'm going to pause it at that last bit and pretend it never happened. No.839877
Too much air time left to have the scene end earlier on a more ambiguous note, not enough time left to fully develop her escape from Mitatsu.
Either option would've worked well, though they would've needed to spread out this story arc over three episodes instead of 2 for this last bit to fully develop it, but I would've been perfectly happy with a slightly more ambiguous ending where it cut a minute earlier, had Haru standing there for a moment, brought up the end-card then followed with the stomping and autistic noises from Masotan and Amakasu, ending the series with an 「え...?」 from Haru-kun. Same happy ending but the impact of the series is kept by not having the scene weirdly fleshed out yet without any satisfying explanation. Hiding the visuals of Amakasu and Masotan in this scene is also important in protecting the impact that their sacrifice(?) had.
