If the story just focused on her, it might have been unbearable, but I'm not completely sure.
And I like Shinji. In his position and age, his behavior is definitely understandable, and his development works well. Asuka's presence changed him quite a bit.

As much as I like the anime ending, I liked the manga ending more. Vash has a time limit along with the other plants. He makes the most with what time he has left and he isn't completely chained to Rem's words anymore. It should also be noted, he was still a child when he left Knives and even at a 100, he still had a childish mentality. It wasn't until he met the gung-ho guns that he was forced to mature and it wasn't until he made the conscious decision to stop Knives, no matter what, that he was able to move past Rem.

Ichigo's main problem was Kubo continuing past the fight with Aizen. He still would have been lame for a mc, but he was at least willing to give it all up to stop Aizen. All of the bullshit that followed just made things worse. Not only did Ichigo have a hollow side, he was also part Quincy. Grand Fisher was hinted at being a major reason as to why he had hollow powers, but then his dad just kills it and it never gets explained as far as I remember. Ippo starts out way too OP, he works his way up through a tournament to fight a rematch with a guy he already beat and beats him. What's the point? All the while he keeps his same stupid wimpish personality, getting these weird bouts of confidence in the ring, autistically throwing himself into grueling training and whatnot, but hasn't developed more confidence anywhere else, at least as far as I've seen (the end of the Rookie Tournament arc). I thought he'd get into a fight with those bullies and they'd piss off or becomes his pals or something, but they just sort of befriend him because they liked boxing, found out he was a pro and watched him win a match. He's so passively lame outside of the ring/training. Really most of the guys he's fought until now have been more interesting characters than he is. Yet they all lose to him. Everyone loses to this big dumb autist, it's sapping all the fun out of the series, seeing this kid win fight after fight, never taking a loss. I actually really like everything else about this series, it's a shame it's saddled with Ippo.
