Are Popularity Polls reliable sources of information or a hindrance?

 No.823784

>>823763

Dunno, but it's always funny to see the polls when the manga is only in like it's second or third volume and barely ten characters have been introduced.

 No.823895

It's a way autistic people fight over their waifus/husbandos.

 No.823901

>>823763

They're a reliable way of telling who is popular among the kinds of people that feel the need to actually participate in popularity polls.

 No.823988

>>823784

It's even more ridiculous, when they don't have 100 characters, so besides filling it with anime original, background characters that had zero lines and when that isn't enough, they fill it with items like a broom or bucket, or even events or spells. Cases in point:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170819180103/http://skythewoodtl.com/konosuba-poll/

>21: Natsume Akatsuki(Author)

>21: Cabbage

>26: Giant Toads

>36: Megumin’s panties

>42: Neroid (Drink)

>52: Magic tool that beeps when lying

>56: Chris’s pebble (steal lesson)

>57: Chris’s panties

>58: Girl that Kazuma pushed away at the beginning

And so on...

Why not just make a shorter list?

 No.824017

How does this polling actually go there? Via letters or electronically?

 No.824028

They're good and reliable because its only he most engaged of readers who participates in them.

 No.824052

>>823763

It's a reliable source of how shit the nips' taste is.

 No.824070

It's at least interesting to see where the normalfags interest lie. You can usually discount the top two spots since it's almost always inevitably MC in 1 and heroine in 2. It's actually kind of interesting that souma isn't even the most popular in his own show and that the top spot is actually pretty hotly contested.

I remember there being times when they got raided and had ridiculously skewed results. Otherwise, yeah, it's just fun seeing how bad their tastes are. Kira from Gundam Seed owned the top of the newtype charts for years. Medaka Box probably has one of the more interesting ones, where it obviously affects the actual series and gets referenced a few times.

Popularity polls were a mistake.

 No.824147

>I remember there being times when they got raided and had ridiculously skewed results.

Like that one character from Inazuma Eleven who's just a background goalie.

But yeah, usually the edgy or "mysterious" character will top the poll reliably in WSJ polls. I remember Gash Bell in particular, gash's evil twin brother, a character that had close no screen time and was shown only in flashbacks kept topping polls because he was dark and mysterious.

 No.824163

Well, the problem with the polls is that the Nips have shit taste. They unironically like characters like Sasuke from Naruto. The other problem is that otaku autism is a terrible, terrible thing, and often drives them to buy dozens of copies of a thing just to send in multiple survey and vote cards.

 No.824168

>>824163

>The other problem is that otaku autism is a terrible, terrible thing, and often drives them to buy dozens of copies of a thing just to send in multiple survey and vote cards.

But even that sens a message, if someone is desperate enough to buy multiple manga issues(or whatever contain the surveys) just to make sure his favorite character/waifu gets the top place , then surely he will buy the new figurine based on that character.

I swear to god if Erina wins the Souma bowl I will do very mean things.

Tadakoro has the most built up relationship with him.

 No.824184

>>824180

She ain't going to win man, it sucks I know. It will be either Erina or no one and it seems more and more like the former rather than the latter. At least she's actually relevant to the story now and not just background eye candy.

I hate this.

Do you really want cute Tadokoro to "win" The Somabowl and end up with that retard? She deserves better, Soma and Erina deserve each other.

 No.824333

>>824227

Its because Souma hasn't realized yet, even with Erina that the best way to elevate your cooking to greater heights is to cook for the one you love. Its what brought Joichirou back to having fun with cooking and it indirectly helps Tadakoro get better and better.

 No.824671

Kumagawa fucking deserved that win and no one can tell me different.

 No.824696

HE HATES THIS!

 No.824699

Popularity polls are not so bad since they are about character, but it is even worse to consider how shonen jump bases everything in polls.

If a serie is not voted enough in polls, it will get axed. Now what's the issue? Is a series appeals to a more mature public, they will most likely not bother to vote for the series they like compared to kids who find sending their votes to a magazine like something new and enjoyable.

A lot of times when you compare online polls with classic magazine polls you see how the results are TOTALLY DIFFERENT, since little kids are not so good with computers but teenagers and young adults don't mind so much voting using hashtags in twitter or by online polls.

I'm sure a lot of series with great potential, like Mx0, wouldn't have got axed if online popularity was a thing back then. But the ecchi is bad for getting votes (kids won't tell their parents they want to vote to the ecchi series), same for things were kinds cannot self-insert or be edgy.

 No.824730

Thanks for reminding me of one of the few character polls that did something, the Kinnikuman one. Not even the first places, but some numbers had side stories made for them (ranking 29th because puns, a urinal-themed wrestler got expanded lore). Also the musou poll which I'm still waiting for that Precure won the poll by a large margin

>>824147

Not even a goalie, some random fuck from Teitoku that has a goblin face What's funnier, during the GO or Wii game countdowns he actually got on top of the polls and had an adult version drawn for it. A general Level-5 poll had a fucking airplane at the top.

>>823988

That's where part of the joke lies. See for example Teekyu's character poll in the 100th episode where it's nothing but background characters, and the top four is all one character, with one of the main girls not even showing up.

>>824052

Or how superstitious they are. Remember that once Kira Yamato finally got pushed out of the poll after 10 or so years by the Matsus and a tragedy struck that same year?

The best part is none of those characters are made up and actually appear at some point.
