I watched this and found it surprisingly enjoyable.

Being a NEET and watching anime about a NEET seems very self-indulgent, but I can live with that. Anybody else like Welcome to the NHK....or something similar?

It's a fantastic show, but the island episodes are cancer.

The ending seemed a bit rushed, they could have easily used the island episodes as a buildup for the ending instead.

Yeah I'm a fan. I apologize if the following is too blogposty.

My little brother is a professional programmer. I'm a late twenties NEET living off my parents' dime in a studio apartment. Our whole lives we've both been into games. He is frustrated because he codes finance software. I'm the "artsy" one of the family and I can't hold a regular job. I watched this anime about a year ago. Then six months later I asked my brother for help making a game. He needs something to distract him from his horrible job. I know the only way I can work at something is if I care about it and game design is the only thing I really care about. I just can't help but relate my current life situation to this show.

>but the island episodes are cancer.

It's weird because if you were to read the episode synopsises you'd think those would be the best episodes, but no, they're shit.

Read the novel.

Also, if it didn't stab you right in your soul, you're not NEET enough.

Since you're in the NEET life I would recommend you go ahead and read the novel too. Sure you're spoiled to the end but I recently read it after a year-ish from my last rewatch of the show and the differences between the novel and show are significant.

Without spoiling those differences consider that the source material had to be made fit for tv so the taboo bits had to be changed around. The bits cut out really make a difference in the way Yamazaki is portrayed. Importantly the bits changed also change the tone of the story from a dark comedy to something more depressingly real but still humorous. The show also can't really go in to the depth of Satou's mind due to the limitations of the medium. Which as someone in similar circumstances you may seem some disturbing similarities that could make you enjoy the story even more. I did at least. There are some other differences as some other anons may note, but one last thing I'll mention is that the book will make you want to protect Misaki's smile even more.

Filler can only be so good.

The show relates to most of us in varying amounts.

Only thing that helped the NEETs in show and the novel were being cut off and being forced to work for food. Even then some can't improve much.

You still working on the game?

Yes. Misaki is top tier in the novel.

Also, I relate more to Yamazaki than anyone else.

I want to find my Misaki.

Does he still have his vcard? Don't remember very well.

What's more, is that the filler parts such as the island arc which I didin't find to be too bad personally and the MMO arc absolute dogshit are not there, giving the whole narrative a much more compact and "complete" feel. You can tell nothing was tacked on, it's more planned out. Definetely worth a read.

Who, Satou?

He lost it with the high school girl who always used to talk about conspiracies and /x/ shit.

This thread: In short, read the novel.

It's moments like this you know that it was written by a NEET for NEETs.

Yes, i liked alot. The insecurities that start to grow by being alone for a long period of time are the things i related more. Even the simplest things like communicate with other people starts to become difficult. You posture, your gestures, and even the way you look at the people are strange; you become an alien. It's a never ending spiral. Now i really want to read the novel.

How good is the translation? I might pick this up, but I have had very bad experiences with translated books in the past.

Some translators are bad writers who manage to ruin good literature, and dropping 30 eurobucks on a badly translated book is not something I can afford right now.

Well you can take a look at this version and see. Tokyopop was the only one to translate it into english as far as I know and I've never heard anything wrong with this version.

If you want more stuff like NHK you're better off reading manga. Oyasumi Punpun, Aku no Hana, Chikan Otoko, Onanie Master Kurosawa and Boku wa Mari all cover similar themes from NHK.

True, but I prefer prose or animation.

This was a great novel and a pretty good anime. Too bad those others are too depressing or "artistic" to be properly adapted or greenlit.

Punpun is too much of a consolidated experience that you can't have any other way, Aku no Hana went full retard with it's adaptation, Onani Master Kurosawa will never be adapted because of the subject matter, and I don't know the others.

I read the manga of it when I was younger and it bugged me enough to stop reading it, when I finally got around to the anime it hit too close to home for me and I just didn't continue it after several episodes. Looking back on it now that I've pulled myself out of NEET status I can enjoy it more just because it doesn't cause me to reflect on my current situation and despair.

Especially if you read the novel, it's more than just about being a NEET, and it might even be more for wageslaves than anyone.
