This one's actually quite different. If I were to say what actually makes SAO Abridged good, it's that rather than simply trying to make jokes, the writers took the time and effort to creat an arcing story using the original SAO series. Kirito and Asuna get personalities, and character arcs. Kirito's guild dying actually means something in this one, and the entire explanation for why they were trapped in the game DOESN'T get hand-waved at the end. It's better than SAO simply for the fact that it has effort and care put into it.

Perfect sum up.
It's not that it's really that great is just that it's the only where the abridged stuff is clearly well above the original work.
Writers properly play with vidya codes and trope, drama has lasting effects, characters have character, overall story makes more sense.
All the things SAO cruelly lack.

gave the first episode a try, even if I've hated just about everything after the arc with the titular game. Hard to get invested when there's no real stakes, and while I was intrigued enough by the prospect of some tall lady rping as a pink loli, the disconnect of her being superfast and cool just because while being with a partner that actually knows his shit left a bad taste in my mouth.
Maybe I'll stick around for three episodes, but I feel like I'm definitely not going to bother watching to the end.

So what would you rather have? Her be entirely useless or be literally Kirito with magical "I'm the best" powers? The anime skipped ahead, but by this point in the LN she had already spent a few months doing nothing but playing solo PvP against groups in her free time.

You have the side-characters talking about whatever Winchester, Browning, or Smith and Wesson the opponent currently has, meanwhile our Protagonist's standard hunting rifle makes his hair change color and become OP. Gun-of-the-Week, the Anime sounds awesome.

Adaption of an unrelated work by the author of Kino's Journey brought in to provide a separate story with SAO treated as a background setting. Said author is a washed-up "up-and-comer" from 2000, so it's hilarious to see how much better he can deliver on the VRMMO concept than Reki, the "best" amateur of recent years.

As always, it's "let's rearrange everything!" syndrome, episodes 2 and 3 essentially come first in the primary work. Instead of a slow build-up and four straight episodes of action, you get this weird break between them, and then back to the fun things.

The line-less shooting if you know how to use a real gun is kind of a weird mechanic to have, because this is supposed to be an American game. There are so many people in America that own and practice shooting real guns all the time that you'd expect it to be a well-known mechanic and huge part of the meta rather than a secret technique that only a few people can do. They're playing on Japanese servers so it would be rarer, but you'd expect players to know it's possible.
Anonymous 04/29/18 (Sun) 02:21:17 No. 820184
>>820064
Line-less shooting isn't a mechanic at all, not in the way you mean. The trick is that the line shows up as soon as you rest your finger on the trigger, so players who don't know how to shoot start to aim, prepare to squeeze, and find the line using the aim assist. To shoot line-less, you have to get the exact right line and pull the trigger in one swift motion, to avoid any aim assist popping up. There is, however, line-less sniping, which is a well known mechanic; lines are only visible if you are aware (how this is determined is unclear) of their origin point, so snipers get a free shot.
Spoilering these for a reason.
By the midpoint of the second tournament about five episodes from now, you should be introduced to a Japanese hunting club. They actually know how to shoot, so they're capable of it, though not to the degree of gun-nuts like M and Pito, or any of their mercenary supports. It's like the divide between casual players and serious players, where the people in this first tournament are 90% smallfries .

But the thing is you can't actually shoot like that.
Just accurately shooting while moving at a human sized target 50m from you with an AR is not easy and if the target is also moving it's considerably difficult...
Even something like ArmA is insanely simplified compared to reality when it comes to the shooting mechanics.
In fact it's worse, most militaries don't have an accuracy doctrine for the infantry, they have a volume of fire doctrine. IE "if 10 guys are emptying 2 SAW, 8 M-4 vaguely in the direction of the enemy one bullet is bound to hit something, worst case scenario the enemy is too busy taking cover to retaliate/move". Because shooting in itself isn't easy and doing any sort of athletic movements at the same time is very very hard.
That's the whole reason of existence of assault rifles: you fire single shots from a fixed position at a know target, you fire bursts in the rough direction of the enemy when in doubt (which is 87% of the time).
It mean that if there is an assist in the game and you play only with your own skills you would get your ass handed out to you 99% of the time, even if you're a good shooter IRL, because the average gamer would simply be OP.
And quite logically the place this doesn't applies would be for aimed shots (which is easier IRL) and reflex shooting (short range). If you know how to properly use the sights, have zeroed them before hand, etc... and therefore can tell were the gun is shooting relative to your point of aim, the assist system becomes largely irrelevant, allowing you to take accurate shoots without it.
Note that you would need triggers with very short pull which I assume would be extremely unpopular in the game (since they largely only use 2 stage triggers).

Main thing is really just for the guys with SAWs to pin down the target with volume of fire, then have the guys with M4s get closer to be able to hit decently enough.
That or pin the enemy with volume of fire until artillery or air support finishes them off.
Pinning is really useful in winning firefights.

Sure, and it can't be done with automatic weapons, which limits its usage pretty significantly. But it's apparently not that hard to do, because as the other anon mentioned there's a team of hunters in SJ2 that can all do it, and manage to take out quite a few people. There are a lot of hunters in the US--if that's all it takes, you'd expect it to be a staple of tournament play. I guess this can all be explained by this tournament being a gimmick that doesn't attract the best players, though.

It's not too hard to shoot accurately while standing still (or better, laying prone) reliably, it's already harder to hit something that moves, which is why the sniper guy does it (and jap hunters) but essentially it would rely on you having a field advantage (distance, cover, surprise).
The problem is it being a game, players using the game mechanic are able to get reliable hits while on the move which simply isn't possible IRL (unless getting really serious military-style training) and worse as the Lenn or Kirito demonstrated, it's actually possible to move both way faster than IRL and in ways that are impossible IRL.
So sniping ends up the only time you can really use IRL shooting skills, because even if you miss your opponent can't riposte immediately (which should happen, there enough plenty of military sniper videos shooting at snackbars, guys trained up the ass that will show you that yeah taking 2 or 3 bullets to hit a running guy is perfectly normal as on average it takes something between 50 000 and 1 000 000 for the infantry to do the same).
And snipping isn't america favorite past time. America favorite pastime is emptying M-4 at 50m and using scopes any distance past that and pretend they shoot well (when you're supposed to train to use it at 300. without a scope. So that you might hit something at 150 in combat conditions...).
If the shooting mechanic related to IRL stays coherent I fully expect the hunters to use ambush tactics, but being hunters they will do so at a relative close range (42m being the average hit on target for hunting) which will be their downfall.
Note that I don't actually expect it because reading anything written by jap gunloons while being one with actual access to funs and a little IRL knowledge has given me some of the greatest facepalms I've ever had.

Kirito's GGO avatar contradicts the theory.
It also is highly likely that the character generation is done by The Seed which it likely did for all the VRMMOS Karen tried.
It seems to be an inherent aspect of the engine and not in the power of the developer, otherwise Karen's VRMMO otaku friend would have recommended her a game with character creation.
There's also the fact that character types have certain rarities, and that people seem to be able to reroll to get certain looks.
In the SAO GGO arc a background character tried to buy Kirito's account calling it an F-1300 type which you allmost never get, later he corrected himself after realizing Kirito is male and called it an M-9000 type.

But I wouldn't consider some edgelords suicide threats as constituting a "death game". She probably wouldn't follow through and if she did, who cares? It's not like people who don't want to die are at risk. Unless we are going that retarded.

Yeah. It was doing so well until it introduced this pretty convoluted way to save a person from dying by having this specific person be the one to kill her in the game. Kind of cornered themselves when the mangaka called it Sword Art Online when we are so far removed from it at this point. Unless Sword Art Online is actually revived later in the Light Novels, they might as well have gone with a name changed and called it something else. The connection to it are very loose now and is there for branding purposes.

Would you help LLENN be seeded?
It was really stupid that her friend hadn't played the game before. I assumed she already was a GGO veteran, but apparently she's just super powerful at everything after seemingly never having played anything but fantasy games. And she just happens to get another loli character in a game where people didn't even know that the models existed. Would at least have made sense if she had bought a rare account or something in the past.
This guy, or whatever xir is, isn't Kirito, is it? Also the animation sure took a dip in this episode. Lots of QUALITY and LLENN's movements in battle looked bad. I hope they're only saving budget to spend it on the battles.

No it isn't. Kirito's GGO skin has long hair.
> I hope they're only saving budget to spend it on the battles.
That's not how anime production works. Animation starts to go QUALITY when there are production issues.
A director making changes late, or animators creating bad cuts which need to be redrawn can heavily impact the already thight schedule that anime production has. Furthermore there's lots of outsourcing for most anime, a bad looking episode can be the result of having choosen a suboptimal company to do the work.
The recap episode was already a bad sign, recap episodes are normally used when the production starts having issues.

They dropped the ball on Pito. She's somehow supposed to be absolutely crazy and obsessed with death, but even the fucking JK are as bloodthirsty as Pito is, comparatively she doesn't seem any worse than the rest of the cast.

Honestly the whole "obsessed with death and wants to die" part of her character seems like a ham-fisted after thought. It's like he wrote the whole thing then some editor complained there wasn't enough drama. She'd be a lot more likeable if she was just a cute edgelord.

It's not some slice of life comfy thing, I'm expected to feel tense about the situations presented in the show so if there's no risk why would I? In the context of the universe it's just a fucking video game. I'm interested that the batshit insane chick is threatening murder-suicide, that means this royale match has consequences in context and makes me want to stick around to see how it will turn out.

Because it's fun you retard. The only appeal of this trash is getting to see a pair of cute loli's running around blowing shit up and shooting people. You don't need any retarded ass plot to give it suspense. It's a competition, the tension is whether they win or not.
Anonymous 06/04/18 (Mon) 17:39:19 No. 831247

Alright, here's the deal: its not a bad show. But its not great or good. Yet it isn't 100% shit. The 'only' tension in the show is derived from the fact that this is supposed to be apart of SAO. Which, if you recall, the only appeal was "If you die in the game, you die IRL." Therefore; GGO has to have some element of 'actual' consequences. Hence, Pito and her "if I can't get a thrill of death going on then I'm going to kill myself!" However, Im 100% certain, after watching the sixth episode that everything is going to turn out okay. How? Because every character we have encountered in the game has been seen out of the game. Also, now that we have seen real M, we can now assume who Pito really is. The singer that LLEEN listens too Why? Because its pretty obvious. 1. We have seen the first sponsor of SJ. But not the second. The first apparently had a lot of money to sponsor SJ, so that means the second sponsor has to have money.
2. We have seen all the characters in game out of game, save for one.
3. M found LLENN fairly easily. There is no way he's some hacker or anything like that. He also has obvious ties to Pito. So he's either her boyfriend, very good friend or a really, really good stalker. If Pito is the singer, it would not be hard to pin-point who LLENN is irl since she sent her that letter and all you have to do is tarace it back an boom, the sender.
I would've like a show about lolis shooting lolis in a vidya gaem. But we don't get that since the author of this needed a way to help sell his idea and SAO needed a filler for something aside from Kirito and his harem. So we have to have the SAO tie-in so that we can have lolis running and gunning. Even though this has 'nothing' to do with SAO.

What I didn't understand is why Fuka didn't just flood both the groups with grenades each time, one would be enough in the centre of both those groups. I suppose Llenn has to be given something to do.
>>831247
The most it seems to have with SAO is using the same game and occasionally referencing SAO, the death battle royale season and someone offering to buy Fuka's avatar much in the same way someone offered to buy Kirito's avatar.
