A wonderful episode with clear themes of family and ancestry. They never once called war a good or bad thing, simply stated it happened and many died in the process. I think the target audience for this show is people around Mana's age so middle school (12 to 14). This kind of story wouldn't appear in America or maybe most of the West. It would be so focused on making soldiers look like superheros and patriotism that the romance, horror, and indifference would be lost entirely.
By indifference I mean the part where Mana mentioned how far away Japan was from New Guinea and how the soldiers bodies were handled. There was no sugar coating that these guys were sent to some faraway island they likely had never heard of and told to fight. Their skeletons were not hidden or cloaked in shadows. It was a very direct presentation of the war which is a huge contrast to the usually indirect convention in japanese media.
