It wasn't as bad as I was thinking, but it's still shit. I hope we see more outcast girls being outcast girls and finding their place in the world.
What I don't like is the same things happening and being explored as in the original with Naota, which was all about male puberty, and these are girls. Also, there's no Otaku references, which were half the jokes in the original. In fact, there's really no jokes in this one at all. It's just a mishmash of girls acting cute like we get anywhere else. The only thing we have as far as references is this fat gendo.
Also, it doesn't have that same dirty feel the original had. You could smell the smoke in the air when you looked at the town in the original. Couple that with the real dramatic emotions the teenagers felt in the original and you get an unique atmosphere. Perhaps it was because the team was just getting off of Eva, but the original was able to have you feel very close with the character's inner feelings right off the bat and you know how sad and frustrated everyone was. In this, I have no idea what the characters are going through.
So far Sora Yori Mo Tooi Basho from last season did the "average girl wants to do something amazing before she grows up" better.
I swear, if they don't use this explanation of the forehead magic for something interesting, I'm going to be angry. You shouldn't explain things like this and give it labels if there's no reason for it.

I remember that conversation we had. I love the original like nothing else, too. You know damn well it won't match up and are just trying to find an excuse to quit.
