I think it wasn't even that, he was just in a hurry and said something random before running away. Maybe he doesn't even remember it, although he is kind of an unreliable narrator, as he seems to be lying to himself pretty often.

There's an interesting thing about this series anon, one that makes it seem very realistic. All the girls in it are terrible. There is no "best girl", just like in real life. It's not something that can be easily put into words, but you can tell when reading the series that they are all simply awful. Sure, they have a few good points here and there, but the author shows us how deeply flawed they are through their interactions with the main character.

That being said, Saki is an existence that breaks this trend. While she doesn't appear much in the adaptation, her appearances in the light novels suggest that she is possibly the only girl who isn't shit in the series, and who doesn't have any hidden motives like the majority of the characters.
