Have you seen any anime movies lately? What did you think? I recently watched "Only yesterday" and to be perfectly honest, I didn't like it. I guess what I did not like, was the general lack of a central plot / too much of a SoL. The only real conflict was wether she should stay or leave, I found it boring. I do enjoy SoL though, but 2 hours of it was too much. I know that some of you really like this movie, and that I'll probably get some flak for saying this.

Watched Golgo 13 and the No Game No Life movie just recently. Golgo was a really fun watch, it shows all the signs of Dezaki at his peak and was produced pretty lavishly. Interesting that it also has the dubious honor of having anime's first CG scene, really shows off the difference in how hand-drawn and CG ages.

The NGNL movie also really exceeded my expectations, a decent loli romance for once and I'm a sucker for A.I. exceeding its programming

I think it's excellent but if you're not drawn in by the romanticizing of nip countryside life/general ideas of nostalgia I could see it being boring. If you want a Takahata movie with more conflict you should try Kaguya-hime, or if you just want a more compact experience, Gauche the Cellist.

OP here, as a follow up, this scene really stuck with me. When the rest of the the family is going out to eat, Takeo is in a bad mood and saying she is not hungry. When her father goes in and says "are you not coming?" I was expecting him to say to the rest of the family "I'll stay with Takeo. I think we need some time together, just the two of us." sitting down next to her asking her things like: "hey darling, what is wrong?" "are you really not hungry?" "Is it perhaps how you are doing at school?" and maybe saying "why don't we go for a small walk somewhere, just the two of us.", instead of just simply saying "I see." and then leaving. I guess my way of thinking is more of a modern, western way of parenting, which doesn't really fit in a 60s Japanese setting.

I watched "Expelled From Paradise". It's choke full of chiches and shitty CGI animation. The premise is that humans made themselves a matrix and put it on a star cruiser in Earth orbit, and decided to stay that way forever. On Earth there's an AI programmed to take humans an interstellar journey who built itself a different star cruiser in Earth orbit, but it's missing power source which has to be launched from Earth. Its mission is to take humans on interstellar travel, so it was trying to recruit humans from the matrix, by breaking into the simulation, and the matrix decided to destroy the AI. They all fight and in the end the AI goes to its star cruiser on a rocket and the matrix fails to stop it.

But it has this really fucking weird ending scene. The AI is embedded in a weapon-grade power source, explicitly stated in the anime. So it flies itself ot its star ship on a rocket and then docks to it. The star ship, it looks like a fucking weapon, and when it starts, it fires a red laser beam. And camera angles never show Earth off beam path, in fact it does not show the planet again whatsoever. What the actual fuck is that ending? Did the AI deceive everyone, and the matrix was right all along and the agents were just dipshits for buying into AI's lies? Or is it just insane? Does it thoroughly fucks up already desloated Earth with that huge fuckoff laser beam? I bet that scene is made that way is on purpose.

I really liked the tone this movie set, and the contrast between the flashback scenes and the ones set in the modern day was great.

On the note of what I've been watching recently I saw Nanoha Reflection. It's fairly standard Nanoha series stuff, and I liked it for that, although it's never quite the same as the first series and A's.

Slayers Perfect (the first Slayers movie) is actually perfect. I've seen it probably a dozen times now and I have never gotten bored of it nor lost the dumb smile on my face the whole time I watch. Whenever I need a nice reset in between watching long or intense anime series' I go put Slayers Perfect on.

Most recent I've watched was Bakemono no ko, it was pretty good.

Also watched Yoru wa mijikashi, but I had forgotten Tatami galaxy completely so I might've missed some stuff, at least I watched Uchouten kazoku some time before seeing it.

On bad movies, Mardock scramble series. From promoting interspecies gay relationships to 1/3 of it being gambling for no reason, involving characters who transplant organs like vaginas or boobs into random parts of their bodies, it was a retarded movie altogether.

It's also an example of how not to do symbolism, literally everything is a fucking egg symbolism in your face and I don't even really know why after watching it.
