You mentioned them three times but you are still underselling them. The have interesting designs but, because of Zun's "style", they still leave much room for individual choices of the artist. The same goes for their behaviour and everyday lives. Also, there's a shitton of them, meaning that you'll fit at least some that fit your taste.

There's also the creator's embrace of fanworks as being something special within the cosmology itself. There's more connection between Touhou fanworks and the canon than there is between the fanworks of anything else and their respective canons. Merely calling your fanfiction "an alternate universe story" is pretentious, because you're making statements about how somebody else's world handles relations between universes or dimensions or whatever. Touhou just goes full in and says "everyone's Gensokyo is equally legitimate, even versus the canon". There's a sort of welcoming embrace there that corporate entities can only ape in trying to generate communities for their IPs. Everyone who has ever created something for Touhou, be it a remix, an animation, a fanfiction, even a mod to put the characters into an unrelated game, has actually built upon the canonical cosmology of Touhou.

A crowdsourced mythology has a name. It's a culture.

No it doesn't. That's just what people on tumblr like to believe in order to justify their retarded fanfiction. They even go as far as calling it "headcanon", as if that makes their stupid shit more legitemate.

The canon reigns surpreme, most people are just too lazy to read up the sources we have(or even play the games) and are quick to say that touhou has no story.

But that's simply not true, so stop treating "your Gensokyo" as anything but a stupid fantheory.
