It might be because our brain processes images on a computer screen and paper differently? I remember reading in the past somewhere that the brain perceives things on paper as real life objects. Like text isn't just some abstract idea but the actual letters and words are registered as physical objects that you can manipulate in space. Whereas for some reason that doesn't happen when looking at computer screens. It would make sense to prefer paper art books as you have to do so much spatial manipulation in your head with them.

Scanner to digitize it.
GIMP 2.9 development version and a cheap Wacom tablet for digital inking.

Any tips for coloring quickly in clip studio? I know the magic wand and layers are pretty much key, but my line art always ends up having small gaps which leads to the wand or bucket tool covering the entire work. And when it comes to shading I have a very hard time doing it; creating that flow that makes good eyes and hair. I am not very good at it.
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 20:50:20 No. 784205
>>784162
Small gaps are largely unavoidable, especially when you have sharp edges. Some people use layer effects such as a drop shadow or outline that matches the colour then rasterizing it. Some magic wand outside of the lines, invert it, and fill it in from there. Some just use blend modes. I personally have to fill it manually, as my lines are a little bit transparent.
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 21:11:25 No. 784211
>>784205
Wow, it's incredible simple but I didn't even think about inverting the selection to try and minimize necessary fixes, thanks. If you're still around, would you mind explaining what blend modes are? Actually, layer effects like drop shadow and outline are also unknown to me.
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 21:20:59 No. 784219
>>784211
Not the same anon, but blend modes are basically the functions which determine what happens to the pixels when you put one layer on top of another.
Say you have two layers, L1 on the bottom and L2 on top:
Normal alpha blending means your final pixel value is (L2*alpha) + (L1*(1-alpha)).
Additive blending just means it's L1+L2.
Multiplicative blending means it's L1*L2.
and so on...
The blending get's evaluated sequentially upwards, so first the bottom two layers get blended together, then the output of that is blended with the next layer up, and so on until all the layers have been blended. Usually each color channel is evaluated independently, with black being (0,0,0) and white being (1,1,1).
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 21:34:22 No. 784233
>>784219
Chiefly what is something like that used for?
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 21:52:34 No. 784236
>>784233
Blend modes affect how certain layers interact with each other, causing a number of different qualities that change how work can be done, and how it will appear. You need to experiment a lot to understand how to use them properly, but it's often though blend modes that most traditional artists can digitally paint their work. It's meant to mimic how actual paints function in some ways, one example being that slapping white on top of yellow isn't going to yield a solid white, so you would want to use one of the blend modes to get a desired effect.
Anonymous 01/21/18 (Sun) 22:04:42 No. 784241
>>784233
Alpha blending is used all the time. Any time you want a layer with some transparent parts so you can see lower layers through it, you're using alpha blending.
Multiply mode can be used to add color to a grayscale image, or to do things like add shadows or make clothes look damp.
The rest are more specialized and I only use them very rarely.

Exactly. There are lots of different ways they can blend together. Sometimes one completely covers the other, but other times the two can mix together to create a different color.

Alright, I'll start off with something simple for this month.
DIC Exercise: A simple design sheet
Take some time to create a character. That's it.
- You can go for different poses and expressions
- If you don't feel like going for poses or expressions, you can instead work with different palettes, hairstyles, clothing, accessories, etc.
- You don't have to colour it if you really don't want to
- Sketches are fine as the purpose of this is to get something started, even if you aren't going to use it for anything in the future
- Feel free to add an autistic backstory to your character
- Posting it is optional
Hopefully anyone lurking this thread gives it a go. I want to see if we can move beyond just talking about "how to draw" and instead apply ourselves as a bunch of strugglers who wish to create worthwhile things.

An awful example, but this is what I mean. You basically bumble around a single hue without deviating too much away from it, giving an analogous harmony. In this case, I'd sit between red and purple, preferably adding neutrals in between to emphasize the hues.

Composition Exercise: Golden Ratio
Everyone's heard of rule of thirds and golden ratio at some point, so I think everyone knows what this one is about.
Stuff to note:
- You can utilize multiple spirals in a single image
- These are arbitrary guidelines, you don't have to strictly follow them
- They can make things look really nice if you can utilize them properly
If you're lurking, give it a shot. Mountains and trees can easily shape these types of compositions, so you might want to try it with those first. You can use them with solo character images, but I find they work best when accompanied with some kind of background. It's a lot of fun and can improve workflow by quite a bit, especially when you want to go all the way with an image.

You need to learn proper shapes and dimensions first. Until you can draft decently "straight" squares, triangles, cricles, and ovals, don't even worry about drawing people. Then get down your 3 diensional spacing within a 2D environment. Expand from there into things like brick walls/geometrical scenery, and then you should be good to start learning to draw faces and learning body proportions/dimensions.

Don't drawn anything serious much anymore - mostly because I'm too lazy to go out and buy some proper pencils and shit.
Don't draw digitally because I can't get my $100 dollar Wappad to work right - also because I'm just used to hand drawing from school.
Horns dude(one with no helmet) is prime example of why I give 99% of the dudes I draw full helmets or masks. I have completely forgotten how to draw faces and hair(not that I was ever particularly spectacular at it).
I don't do a lot of color because...it's a hassle. I got a shit tonne of acrylic and even some oil paints left over from highschool and if I dig down deep enough I'll find a full set of pastels but it's too much bother to get the newspapers out and cordon off an entire section of room just for a drawing or some shit.
I've been meaning to do an honest to God painting though for a while now. The actual painting paintings part was my favorite part about Art Highschool....that's a thing in my country, don't ask why it just is.

First couple of pictures, feet are too wide apart and knees aren't bent enough. Poor position for melee. Generally for passing footwork(stepping left foot, right foot with strikes etc.) styles you have knees bent more since you want a lower center of balance, while with non-passing footwork(fencing, kendo etc) having straighter legs is more acceptable(but often with legs closer to each other). He
Second pics migration era sword looks wonky; handle is all around too small.
Third pics buttons confuse me; looks it's inverted, with the hole-side which should be on top being undeneath where the buttons are done.
The length of the maille is a bit questionable, too. Since at that length it becomes difficult to move your legs(speaking from experience; immediate refund). You could say that it's been made wider at the hem, but that's a waste of rings and weighs more, so generally it either ended at the knee or then had a split.
T. can't draw for shit but have swords and maille.

Yes and yes. To surmarise your current main flaw, your drawings do not sell the underlying 3D volumes in the construction. Look at the feet in the left drawing, there is no three-dimensionality to them. The perspective of the chest is too front-on. The bra strap in the other drawing does not curve around the side of the chest.

My problem comes from how long it takes to make something decent. My mastery is quite high regarding drawing but I just can't fucking be bothered to take the time to do it. I'll spend 4 hours drawing but not spend more than 30 seconds on each sketch. It's like I'm constantly stuck in gesture drawing mode and trying to just magically figure out how to make it more and more detailed over time.
Honestly I think drilling gesture drawing and anatomy made my interests and conditioning in art perverted. I wasn't always like this

How long have you been drawing for anon? Can you post some of your drawings it might just be you if you never show your art to anyone you can develop a perception of stagnation or outright degradation of your art. If all you draw is waifus try drawing other things, draw 3DPD objects, or try something completely different like painting or pottery just to get a different perspective.
The main thing is you need to keep practicing. Even if you have to draw a can on your desk you've drawn before just do it and when you're done compare it to the last time you did. There a ton of things I could tell you to do but all you can really do is just keep drawing.

This answer probably won't be helpful, but I just powered through it (over a period of about 5 years of on-and-off drawing) until my drawing skill was acceptable enough to me that I didn't see all of my sketches as failures. That was when the process, as well as the final product, became a pleasure to me. It helped that my self-esteem and depressed mood had been lifting in the meantime too.

I suggest you slam the breaks immediately before it gets worse.
Sit down and truly think why you're feeling that way. Is it just the lack of skill or is it something deeper?
If it's the lack of skill, that's an "easy" solve.
Stop comparing yourself to where other people are right now and start comparing yourself to where you were yesterday. Focus on your process and figure out how to make it enjoyable. Don't put too much weight on the end result.
The process is the most important thing here because if your process is flawed, then you won't get what you want and it'll become draining if it's not "fun".
Trust me, anon. I've been there. The only way I got out of that rut and avoided burnout is to enjoy my process, draw what I like and focus on getting stuff to finish.
I also found that if you're an artist, you can tell your art's shit because you know where to look for flaws so it's all readily apparent to you. This will never go away so I suggest you don't let it bog you down too much. It's a thing every artist, no matter their skill level, feels.
Here's another tip. Keep your eyes looking forward to the ideal future. To your potential and believe in it. Work towards it. Just because you're shit now doesn't mean you will be shit in a year if you busted your ass.
Just try to draw and study regularly and you'll do just fine.

You should use as many different layers as possible.
Draw individual features, such as eyes or hair, or nose on individual layers in black with a transparent background. Maybe set up two buttons on your pen to go up/down a layer.
When you feel like the black/white is done you can set up a new layer for each object below the black/white layer and just start coloring. If you think something needs to be moved or scaled, or rotated you can simply select both layers of the same object (black/white and colour layer) and apply the same transformation.
>>811176

There is no anatomically correct depiction of an animal who's anatomy we can't study because it is extinct. There are only theories on how much muscle these animals had in certain areas based on their bones, and how they moved based on that and the anatomy of their joints. Even the skeletons you see in museums are just held together with wire. There was a big debate about how Tyrannosaurs move. At first people thought they stood somewhat upright and most of the old skeletons in museums depict them that way.
Nowadays new research including ostriches has pointed out how they move more hunched forwards. See pic one and two.
Wikicommons has many different artists's renditions and pictures of bones though, so there is always that: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Pterosauria_anatomy

As an aside what is the DIC's opinion on asking for practice exercises and sources?

You lines are squiggly because your movements are too slow. Draw fast, long strokes, using your arm. Also keep in mind that 2D is an abstracted representation of 3D, your drawings are 100% flat.
Since you asked, excercises here.

Okay so I took a crack at the whole life drawing thing. Need to get my proportions down and keep firm lines when blending, or smoothing, or whatever it is called. Any other criticisms I have overlooked? Also can anyone recommend a good way of coloring that isn't just sampling from the original image?

You're doing an absurd amount of chicken-scratching, look at the pages between the books or the contour of anything in the picture and compare them with the lines in your image. The blending thing you're doing muddies all the contours and makes the image looks messy and so do those weird zig-zags you're doing, I suggest you learn how to use multiply and screen layers or if you're going to shade with lines, then do hatching. As for coloring, I think Sycra on youtube has the best tutorials for understanding colors and also Gurney's book recommended in >>813354 but that's a little too advanced

Just remember that eyes are 3D and are made of 3-dimensional shapes, complete with their own anatomy. Sadly, 2D takes from 3D. One must study and conquer 3D in order to make the best 2D you can.

Just doing some autism, feel free to bully me for it.
So if you were to draw 20 pages of paper full of anything as practice every day, and you use both sides of the paper, that would be 10 sheets of paper a day.
10 sheets of paper a day come to 30 sheets per month, or 3650 sheets per year.
500 sheets of white A4 printer paper cost 3,50€, or your regional equivalent. A year's supply of paper costs 25,55€.
Companies often give out free pencils at conventions, but you don't need to be a freeloader to get cheap pencils. Said companies order their pencils from printing shops and have their logo, name or telephone number printed on them. If you know the a little bit about industrial mass production, you know that there will always be misprints. Pencils that are completely fine as pencils, but have a slightly off center company logo on it, or someone noticed a typo too late, or the printer in the factory ran out of paint a little too quickly and now the colours are slightly off. Because the printing shop can't deliver this not up to standard product to the original contractor, but removing the print and reusing the pencil is more expensive than buying a new one, they sell the misprinted pencils for next to noting.
You can get more than 100 pencils for less than 8€, so 1 pencil for 0,08€ at worst. (You find deals with 1 pencil for 0,05€ very frequently. In fact it's the standard for misprints).
A single pencil can last you between a month and a week, depending on how much you draw with it. You would need 52 pencils at worst, and 12 pencils at best per year, so maybe 4 to 5€ at worst in pencils.
This comes up to less than 30€ a year. The current rate between € and $ is roughly 1€ to 1,25$. Even if you manage to get more expensive paper, can't find pencils as cheap as I did, or maybe you live in bumfuck nowhere and shipping costs extra, you would spend less than 40$ a year on supplies. You need sharpeners for your pencils, but the blades on those last for years. I have had mine since I was in school, and literally never had to replace it. Even then they are cheap as shit, and you can often get them for free as well. Even if you somehow manage to run out of sharpeners, or you want some colour pencils as well, you will literally never spend more than 50$ a year on supplies.
50$ a year is less than 0,14$ a day. Your supplies won't spoil. Your pencils won't rot and as long as you store your paper somewhere dry and keep it in the box it was delivered in until you actually need it it won't turn yellow or crumple. You can buy in bulk at the beginning of the year. 4000 pages of A4 (80g per m², standard printer paper) will weigh ~20 kilos, or 22,2 pounds, and a 500 sheets pack of paper is only a little larger than your average hard cover dictionary. 4000 sheets will not take more than a corner in your room, or a small space underneath your desk. If you don't crumple up the paper after you are done with it, and instead just stack it as you would stack any other paper, you won't need to bring out the paper bin nearly as often as you would think.
Just go online, order your god damned supplies and start fucking drawing. If even 50$ a year (which is an absolute maximum, unless you want to use more or better paper) sounds like it's too much for you, you can get a jar of some kind and put a 5$ note into it every week. You will have the money in 10 weeks, or a little over two months.
There is no excuse. Even poorfags can afford to draw.
