Personally I think the problem with this anime is that they use the manga as the storyboard to the point that a lot of the scenes just feel incredibly lifeless. At least when we read the manga, we can imagine the movements one way or another. But animation is all about movement. We want to see the horror characters one way or another come to life, but with what we got it just feels more like an interactive manga.

I think the voice acting leads to more hilarity in this adaptation. I don't remember laughing when I read slug girl but this version made me laugh a bit. I think that's part of the problem some anons have when they are saying the tone seems to be off with some of the stories.

Honestly Ito's style just does not work in animated form. For one, the art isn't ever going to be able to have the same level of craftsmanship and detail, as for every smaller action Ito does per page, needs to be drawn multiple times to animate. That and the use of color detracts from it, in a similar way to how MOB, while actually still looking fantastic, loses a bit of the art direction when you no longer have that high contrast of just black and white. There's also the lack of noise. Reading is an act intended to not have any music or sound, paired with it. By removing that element of silence, instead of your mind filling in all the blanks, you're suddenly just observing a situation unfolding in front of you. But most of all, Ito relies heavily on the act of turning the page, to deliver the scares to you all at once, at your own pace.
Without all of these, you're left with just some, admittedly still pretty creepy, pale imitations of the original thing.
The only thing I can see potentially being improved is the cat stuff, and that's only because hearing a good voice actor, voice Ito, could potentially elevate it to hilarious levels.
Which is a damn shame, as his work deserves to be as prolific as it can potentially be, but I see this series doing more harm than good, to the reputation. With people likely walking away thinking it was underwhelming, instead of understanding just how much of a fucking master at this, Ito is.

New episode's out, didn't even get much of a laugh out it, this adaptation is really shitty.

The first part was interesting for how disgusting it is, the second part was uninteresting.

I like the story, its one of the more dumb but kinda good Junji ito stories.

>This is what I mean where Junji ito does not deserve a quality anime if he is just doing random stories and not just his best.
That's really not how writing works, especially when you have to keep making stuff for a living. Being at one's best is not only a matter of effort. Some things are going to be half-assed, sure, but some great ideas will turn out disappointing. You also have to consider what the author thinks is great and what the audience thinks is great often differ.

I have no clue why they decided to give him muscle, he looks like he's ripped beneath that fat, which kind of took me out of it.

This non-endings really make me miss the Ito story threads on /a/, they were a blast.

They should have just devoted the entire episode to the transfer student story

Something about pacing and horror is stronger when you have to turn a page, but yeah endings have always been Ito's weak point.

Fuck off with that super eye faggot shit, Ito has rarely produced good horror, he is very successful at making creepy/disturbing/bizarre imagery.

And with this last episode, the show is done until the 2-part Tomie OVA next season. Overall it wasn't a very good adaptation, if it gets more people to read his stories I guess it will have done its job.

Ito's stuff always had shit adaptations and this is no different. Personally if this is made by a studio who knows how to lighting and atmosphere or at least not overrely on the manga to be your storyboard, it would have worked better.
