The series follows Trevor Belmont, who defends the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions. Originally planned as a film with a script written by Warren Ellis in 2007, the project entered development hell until about 2015, where it was finally funded with help from animation studios Frederator Studios and Powerhouse Animation Studios, along with Netflix

Okay, saw the first episode. First, it was shit. Then Ryou came in shouting for his friend and things got fun when he pulled out the rifle in an autistic rage against the rappers. Then it was severely disappointing with how they did the exposition all in the car. No magic mask, no dog killed, and the guy who left him the "legacy of terror" wasn't even his father. It all felt so rushed, and it became shit again.
Then, the Sabbath scene and the birth of Devilman was well executed, the storyboarding/directing really made it more than it should have been and the animators made some cool scenes. It ended on a high note.
So, it's shit, but sometimes it's not. I'm really torn on this, but I'm intrigued.

Finished it, I personally am quite unhappy with the changes they did.
That they changed Miki from a tomboy to a kind hearted earnest girl, was a terrible decison.
There have been some animation highlights, but there were also some QUALITY moments, and they managed to create a more retarded running style than Naruto.
It never really came to a devilman vs human war, the devilman were on the side of the humans.
Even the ending was changed, Ryo didn't really realize his mistakes, and only really cared about his "love" for Akira.
The anime is still above average, but can't really ba called an adaption. Too much was changed, this is a story lightly based on Devilman, and is not the adaption that I wanted.

Anonymous 01/06/18 (Sat) 07:10:51 No. 777270
In the end I can say I enjoyed it, but it was all over the place. The original manga had pacing issues too, to be sure, but most of the ones crybaby had were introduced as new elements. What exactly was the point of Miko when all was said and done, really? Why was her subplot with the rapper included but then just cut off and then the completely unrelated literal fag who looks distractingly similar shows up as a devilman to move the plot forward with almost no introduction? etc. They could have done a much better job with Ryo in a lot of ways, too, the Satan reveal and ending just felt kind of "oh, ok, whatever" in this version
I think it's probably best to think of this as very much its own thing rather than a direct adaptation of the original. Wish they would've used a different style for the characters during the 'normal' scenes, though, it looks great during weird and colorful abstract shit but just kind of flat and bad all the rest of the time.

Because in the anime, Miki?Miko? ate the yellow shades man with hints of the corpse rotting in her room and the fact that she carries his shades. (which the beanie fag also tries to kill her even after everything)
The only thing I'm truly ticked off is that most of the fight scenes are so fucking dark, yeah it's night but it's a full moon in each scene.

All that and the severed hand they showed at some point made it pretty clear, yeah, I was mostly complaining that it was an abrupt and kind of pointless character arc, considering they went to the bother of adding original characters like that in the first place. I guess maybe they added second Miko to act as a foil to Miki, since Miki had so much of a personality change from the original version.

Even the girls doing the playful humping in one of the first episodes was too lewd for me for reasons I dont want to get further into.
Its even worse that my mom had friends over to do a christian sermon downstairs
The scene in kill la kill im talking about is the scene where Satski's mom sensually fingers her in the bathtub and one of the final scense where a bunch of characters on the show are laying on a huge pile all butt naked

Well I just finished it. It's basically what I expected except in the last two episodes where it seems to have gone completely off the rails. The 20 second montage where all of humanity died threw me off a bit. Honestly, going into the last episode I thought they were setting up Devilman for a second season especially when Akira says they'll fight when they meet again but I suppose not. I think I liked it overall but, oh boy, that pacing. I also think it was too obvious that every supporting character would die.

Well, I finished it. Synthwave Devilman is pretty good. Thought I would have felt stronger about it, but I guess once you read the manga and see the whole story, no other iteration hits you quite as hard.
The social networking stuff was a nice touch. I think it's the first time it's been used in such a realistic and important way. It makes this a modern work that couldn't have been made in any other time and touches on the current zeitgeist nicely.
On the other hand, I feel like Crybaby maybe missed the point, or expanded on it in a different way from the original manga. Go Nagai's original sentiment seemed to be "think rationally, don't fight stupidly, but you're going to do it anyway, so fuck you." Here it seems to be more like, "Don't always think so rationally. Your emotions are important and valid. When you lose your emotions for rationality, you'll become the demons."
What do you think, anon?

The original OVA and manga did it way better. It wasn't about demon sex there. Demons didn't have sex. Sex was a human thing the demons used to possess them.
It was about killing, and honor in battle. Silene did nothing wrong. She only followed her instincts, and it was meant to portray the straight-forward hearts of the demons and how bloodlust and battle were like love to them. It's what Satan found so appealing about the demons. Fusing would be like sex to them, because they're using their bodies to create a new being for more and more efficient killing.
This is why all the sex in Crybaby was the wrong direction, and the Silene episode was handled poorly.
Kaim loved Silene because her killing was beautiful to him. Silene loved Amon because his killing was the greatest next to Xenon.
Also, Silene thought she had killed Amon with that final blow. She never knew he survived and so relished in victory for a moment, making her pass on with a smile. In Crybaby she thought she was about to kill him. It's a much more unsatisfactory conclusion of an inferior adaptation.

I just watched the first two episodes less than an hour ago and holy fuck, this show is surreal. The art style initially took me some getting used to but I'm ok with it now, and I actually kind of like it. It's like Superjail! mixed with a stereotypical seinen series where the high schooler protagonist gets powers and uses them to fight demons. That closeup on Akira's fucking horse cock in his pants right before he starts running, him jerking off to porn blasting on a projector in the auditorium and of course that girl fingering herself to flashbacks of her getting raped with animal noises in the background were probably the highlights and things that I've laughed at the hardest so far, although that last one was sort of in a somewhat uncomfortable "what the fuck" kind of way. I went into this show expecting it to be bloody, lewd and dark as hell but wow, I did not expect the shit I just mentioned in the last sentence. I'm definitely going to at least finish out the first season to see how I feel about it, although I can't see myself hating it unless the quality just completely drops off.

Interview with Yuasa with Japanese Buzzfeed.
Translation from: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2018/01/08/devilman-crybaby-interview-with-director-masaaki-yuasa/
<You’ve talked about your love for the original Devilman in the past. Would you say that this anime adaptation is a long-held wish come true?
No actually, I wouldn’t have dreamed of it in a million years. I had worked with Aniplex for Ping Pong the Animation, and when we entered talks to work together again, they were the ones who suggested Devilman. It had left a strong impression on me when I read it as a kid, but I loved it purely as a fan. I’d never have imagined animating it.
Devilman is a classic that’s been adapted many times, so thinking hard about how I’d approach it, I came to the conclusion that it’d be a difficult project to go forward with. But also that I’d like to see if I was up to the challenge. I’ve personally been feeling at the top of my game lately too, so I thought, “I bet it’d come out well now.” I committed to it rather hastily (laughs).
<I was surprised at how sexual and violent it gets right from episode 1. I can’t imagine you could get away with this on TV…
Yet Nagai-sensei did all of this in a shonen magazine.
If you look at his later works, they’re even more extreme. So I get the feeling that Devilman might have actually been on the restrained side, as a shonen series. That’s why I went into it with the mindset of, “If Nagai-sensei could have done as he pleased, he’d have gone this far,” or “I bet he really wanted to do it like this.” It’s a series that’s over 40 years old now, but there’s a lot that feels relevant to the world today. It was worth adapting in that sense as well.
<I see the delinquents have been modernized as rappers. You even have artists who are active in the hip-hop scene like Ken the 390 and Hannya playing them.
It wouldn’t feel right if we had delinquents acting like they came straight out of the 70s. I feel like rappers are the people who speak what’s on their minds today. Having professionals really gives it that impact, and it’s nice that they stand out in the street passionately explaining what’s happening (laughs).
<While we’re on music, Denki Groove’s “Man Human,” used for the opening animation, is so awesome it gave me chills.
It’s really great. The animated sequence is the work of Abel Gongora.
As for the music in the show itself, I asked Kensuke Ushio, who I worked with on Ping Pong, to make the main characters, Akira Fudo and Ryo Asuka, appear cool. In the show, you can also hear “Devilman no Uta” sung by Avu-chan from Ziyoou-vachi. We even had Avu-chan play Xenon in the show itself.
<I hear there are several episodes where a single animator draws all of the key animation.
There are two of them. Episode 4 is by (Tomohisa) Shimoyama, and episode 9 is by (Takashi) Kojima. Episode 5 is pretty much all (Kiyotaka) Oshiyama so maybe that one counts as well.
Oshiyama also worked on the devil designs, which are separate from the regular character designs. So make sure to check out the devils he came up with, which are creepy-crawly, but also have a lovable side.
<These solo key animation episodes are pretty rare in TV anime. Is there a reason for this?
It’s for the best that it’s like this. For many reasons, it’s now become standard practice to divide up an episode into small chunks for animation. A solo approach makes some things complicated and others easy, and generally we’re better off sticking to the usual ways.
Being able to leave everything to one person is reassuring in terms of managing the production. And as a director, it’s nice to only have one person to explain everything to (laughs). Though of course it requires someone with both great skills and speed, so not everyone can do it. I had a wonderful team for this show, which is why we could pull it off.
<When the show was announced, I remember you said, “I want to make it Ryo Asuka’s story.” If you had to say though, the protagonist is still Akira, isn’t it?
The protagonist, Akira, is steadfast in his resolve from beginning to end. On the other hand, you could say Ryo develops throughout the story, or faces internal changes and struggles at least.
On closer reading, the work begins and ends with Ryo. Akira is there to teach him something. That’s how I approached the work for this adaptation.
Anonymous 01/09/18 (Tue) 23:30:55 No. 779128
>>779127
<I first saw the show without reading the original, and man, that ending… I was left speechless when I finished it.
Yeah, the ending is really what gives the story its impact. As a kid, I don’t think I understood the meaning of that final scene, but even then, it left an overwhelming impression on me.
Besides Akira and Ryo’s story, the character I felt I had to get right was Miki. Why is Akira so attached to Miki, and where does her hope come from? And building on that, why does Ryo come to love Akira? What is it that Ryo takes away from meeting Akira and Miki? I set out to show just how the emotions of these three intertwine.
<What Ryo takes away from it… You’ve said before, “In the end, it’s about love.” Is that what you meant?
That’s right. It’s about what Ryo learns in the end. I set out to make the show with that in mind.
Ryo meets Akira at a young age, and Akira is the only one who supports him. Deep in Ryo’s heart, he feels that Akira is the one thing in the world worth keeping, but he doesn’t realize it. We as humans can value others by more than if they’re “strong” or “weak”, as would be logical. There’s something more important than the rules of natural order. I want the viewer to see just how Ryo comes to this realization.
<In 2017, you worked on two theatrical releases, and Lu Over the Wall won the top prize at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. Do you think you could talk a bit about what must have been a year full of changes?
Actually, things haven’t changed as much as I thought they would, even though I made two movies!
<Really?!
Yeah, they really haven’t (laughs). I hope a lot of people watch DEVILMAN crybaby, and that it leads to something new in the future. In terms of my own ability, it really feels like I’m at my peak. It’s as if I can accomplish anything!

I agree. You got to see more it in some parts, but in others it was all executed poorly.
The scene where Devilman is born was done pretty good, but it's really not like him to have such dark fighting scenes in the rest of the anime. He likes to use contrast and have things to pop.
Also, it felt like he was constrained to just those 10 episodes. The buildup to Devilman being born was wasted time. Actually, there was really no buildup at all. There was no suspense. I hated that, especially after the first OVA executed it so well, making it seem like a proper horror story. In this, it was just, "Oh yeah, you gain superpowers if you fuse with a demon wanna try?" "Okay." There was nothing to it.

I kind of want Cutie Honey, but unlike Devilman, you can't make that current year propaganda friendly without changing a lot. The bad guys were explicitly referred to as evil feminists IIRC.
I honestly doubt Netflix would be so blatantly antitheist that they try going for Maou Dante.
Shin Great Mazinger is a pipe dream, but it would be crazy awesome. Netflix might try going for Violence Jack, but that isn't a clear sequel to Devilman; same goes for Devilman Lady.
Rather than trying to adapt another Nagai Go work, I'm betting they'll try for Tezuka. Kimba the White Lion would be funny in light of Disney leaving Netflix.
Personally, I'd give it about a 8. Animation needed more oompf sometimes, and the coloring was too dark most of the time. The Miko subplot was meh overall even if the ending to it was pretty good. Some of things changed felt like they were changed into something worse, especially the Silene episode, though most of the changes work in the context of the themes the series was trying to focus on or the fact that it was made into one flowing and continuous storyline. I actually like Akira being more of a blatant crybaby, since it was an easy visual cue to show that he had a heart of a human.

>To be honest, the artstyle of Crybaby puts me off.
Understandable. Yuasa isn't for everyone.
>Is the 1972 anime more true to the story?
Not at all. It's less true. Basically, the story goes like this: Toei wanted a superhero anime series where the hero uses dark powers instead of light powers, because it was briefly a popular idea when some other character like that was a hit with the kids. So they ask Nagai to make something like that. Nagai complies by turning the genre on it's fucking head because that's what Nagai does. He pushes shounen to the extreme. Toei says, okay whatever you can have you manga, at least we got a devil superhero we can use to sell toys with the anime. And so the anime became demon of the week Ultraman with some neat visuals, demons, and scenes. But it's extremely removed from the manga to the point of nonrecognition, like ALL Nagai adaptation were until the 80's OVA boom. I like the OP and ED, at least.

I just started watching it and stopped at ep. 4 for the night. Some changes are pretty fucking questionable, but overall I think it's a pretty solid take on the manga. Ep. 1 was pretty damn weak as mentioned in the thread, and it pissed me off that the exposition for Akira and Miki's relationships and personalities were skipped over, but at least they make up for that in the following episodes. Moreover, it really annoyed me that Ryo's homolust for Akira is very noticeable whereas in the manga it was far more subtle. I honestly had my doubts after the first episode, but I felt like Yuasa found out how to handle it from the 2nd episode onwards.
I also appreciate Ryo going full /k/ommando on the demons and anyone that poses a threat to Devilman, holy shit. Yuasa fucking nailed it on that regard.

The epitome of wasted potential. Having no prior experience to this series besides Grimoire, I found this to be just a plain terrible show. Animation is ass, voice acting is fine till it's engrish, pacing is terrible, every character is a terrible person, Amon doesn't really exist as his own character, and it feels like it tells you little to nothing about so many characters backstories. Ambiguity can be a powerful story telling device but definitely isn't used well here. Then there's just the fact it's absolutely miserable. I know it's a dark as fuck gore fest but damn. Not even the fights felt hype. It just was a huge slog.

Same anon here. I'm not really sure what kind of expectations I had going into this but they sure as hell didn't even come close to hitting the mark by the end. The borderline schizophrenic pacing, the inconsistent writing, characters you sometimes don't give a shit about in moments when you probably should... I don't know, a lot of it just seemed to fall very flat to me. Concerning the art style, as I said before, it was initially unappealing to me but I got used to it by the end of the first episode. It had a cool sequence here and there, like an intro to one of the episodes with the rappers rapping over shots of shitty and run down areas with drug deals and guns being shown, but not nearly enough overall. I wouldn't really even call this a bad show in the traditional sense of the term, just lots of intriguing concepts and themes which ended up being very poorly executed with more low points than high ones and ultimately leading me to feel too mixed about it to most likely ever watch it again.
The only true positives I have to say about this would be the god-tier music and the use of social media. I'm a sucker for non-ambient electronic scores and it was very cool to hear synthwave so regularly throughout the show. Even the few modern classical cues were good, and though I'm typically not a fan of the more vocal stuff, the chants and singing on pieces like "Behind the Scene" and "Night Hawk" were very well done without sounding cheesy. As for the social media aspect, it was interesting to see it incorporated into the events of the show, especially the world's reactions on Twitter and whatnot to Ryo exposing Kudo as a demon during the track meet . I like the polarized reactions from people to certain things, especially how Miki's post about her support for devilmen prompts a couple people to come out and say they're devilmen themselves but how almost everyone else is skeptical of her, says she's brainwashed and a horrible person and how it eventually leads to someone suggesting to backtrace her IP, which in turn leads to the mob coming to her house . Even though it probably wasn't supposed to be funny, the reply to that tweet or Instagram post or whatever the hell it was that almost made me pause the episode from laughing as hard as I did was the /pol/-tier response from someone saying something like, "Prepare the firing squad."
There were a couple moments that really got to me emotionally though, most notably when Kozo finds Tare eating Akiko after he becomes a demon because he can't control his hunger and how he keeps trying to shoot him to put him down but can't and starts screaming, crying and asking God why he let it happen even though he's a devout Christian before the military comes in and kills all three of them before Akira can save them . There's just something about families being destroyed like that in anime or movies that kind of bothers me if it's realistically done, which I thought it was in this case, and even though I saw it coming, it still almost brought me to tears, which is pretty damn hard for almost anything to do. The other scene was when the mob kills Miki and the rappers . It wasn't so much their deaths I cared about but rather the aftermath when Akira sees her head on a pike and just fucking incinerates them all after screaming at them and telling them to go to hell because of how disgusted he is with them . That whole episode seemed like the biggest clusterfuck out of all of them to me but the ending almost managed to turn it around, especially the scene right after the previous one post-credits with Miki and Akira riding together on Ryo's bike. I almost feel like that should've been the last episode rather than episode 10, considering how it ended.
All in all, like I said before, I just feel too wishy-washy on this series as a whole to actually like it or dislike it; I'm stuck at this midway point where I don't really care too much about it either way.
