Hard to say. I loved both the crazy series (Kira Deco, Magical Change) and the more serious or innocent ones (Tinkle/Lady), while Happiness was something that balanced both, while also being very comfy (Jewelpet Café theme).

Aikatsu is more idol activity targeted for a slightly older demographic. Characters are teenaged, themes and writing are more mature, and it's not solely limited to dancing/singing. Idols work and compete for roles as actresses, poster girls, producers, designers, etc etc, on top of good old fashioned singing/dancing. It's basically Pripara but more adult and catch-all. However, there are no mascots so it doesn't really fit this thread.

I think it's a pretty good idea to split the threads. There is a clear difference between shows like Pripara, Aikatsu, Pretty Rhythm etc etc, which focus strongly on human characters, CGI dancing/singing segments and minna tomodachi, versus shows like Jewelpet, Pripri Chii-chan, Cocotama, Fairilu etc etc, which are strongly slice of life and have emphasis on critters and overall cuteness. There's a fair bit of audience overlap so I don't think anyone would truly mind if it all stayed here, but then we're entering strange thread territory.

What you are experiencing right now is the writers going full retard. Hibiki was the best written character and provided a nice foil for all the other characters to work with and against. She brought much needed development to the series and some of the neglected idols like Shion, Sophie and Mikan. Then Celepara happened.

Hibiki is now a cartoonishly evil dickhead. She does a 180 and no longer believes that friendship and rivalry can coexist and spur everyone to greater heights. Now it's just all rivalry, stupid rules that contradict her own stances, and no friends allowed. It's a very low point in the series. I can only assume that the little girls weren't getting the point during the beginning of the arc, so they dumbed it down heavily. Too heavily.

Hibiki is still a cute though, and some of her character gimmicks are the funniest. I still laugh every time she gets triggered by Ajimi, or just quietly (but very quickly) walks away when she shows up.

Aikatsu has a tone identical to Pripara's first season. Fun and zany antics, a large cast of super cute girls, and minna tomodachi. However, they don't full go tilt on the friendship aspect. There is some friendly rivalry and competition, especially as you get further in. It reminds me of a good blend of Pretty Rhythms seriousness and Priparas slice of life, though not nearly as drama filled as PR. Coincidentally enough, twitter pic related foretells a new show, relatively fresh off the presses. If you aren't keen on digging deep and catching up on 250(+) episodes, I suppose you could start there. Probably.

Older Precure are all too legit to quit. Once Toei finally caught their footing somewhere around Splash Star, every subsequent release was more tightly focused, with strong and obvious themes, while progressively (until it wasn't) upping the ante on the battles. Newer shows are more kid focused and have lost out on the fisticuffs, especially the currently airing entry, but they're still pretty good and cute. There's also a Precure thread still up if you want to check it out.

The original can be a challenge. Splash Star is like a more solid and entertaining remake of it, if you want the true Precure handholding ultimate power blast experience. But the cute girly stuff and silliness really stepped up in Yes5. Heartcatch is also a great show in general and has a lot of imouto antics and school life. I would try one of those three.

Well thats it. I'm glad Jewlie did not flat out die and never return. The first 39 episodes were the best. The early competitions of Solami vs Dressing, the formation of those units, and the whole Faruru story were so great it may have set the bar too high for the rest of the show. The dream parade story was hit or miss. It brought great characters with Aroma and Mikan and shit characters, namely Hibiki I am very biased. Hibiki had a purpose and adds a bit of depth.. The story tried going in a whole other direction since we knew who won the big events before the songs were even over and actually turned into some shounen-tier powerlevel stuff with the cyalume airys. The divine idol story tried to bring back the good parts of the first 39 episodes and mix that with some of the dream parade elements. It was good, so good that the first two rounds of the tournament stole the show from the final rounds. The ending was lacking just because the stuff before it was so much better.

Once the new seasonal anime settle in, I'll go for Idol Time. Thanks to this anon >>773051 who started me down this path with Laala in a school swimsuit.

I'm really digging IT. I've heard from various places, including Jymmy himself, that it's poopy, but so far it's been a grand old time. I think the Idol Time system itself was a great idea, since it forces the girls out of Pripara and into the real world as they are forced to build up Idol Time. Those segments were always the best in Pripara and that's no different now. JS antics will always top whatever they get up to in the Pripara world. Maybe this will change when the plot revs into action soon, though I hope not.

The new cast of characters are alright so far. The new primary idols (with the exception of Yui) are pretty lame, but the side characters are refreshing after 140 episodes of the same sideline gags from the usual bunch. It'll be interesting to see how the writers evolve their jokes going forward. I have high expectations for the Sheep Squad. They're a bunch of cuties.

They've been nostalgia pandering real hard lately in Idol Time, and this is likely the reason why. Turns out it's not Pretty Rhythm, but just another iteration of the Pretty franchise in general. Also, the staff is 100% the same from the dudes who did Akiba's Trip, if any of you watched that. It doesn't inspire any faith in me, since that anime was ridiculously hit-or-miss, with way more misses than hits and overall pretty shitty, but who knows. Maybe they'll manage to hit a homerun with it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I worry for the future. Target demographics don't really like Yui nor MY DREAM, Aikatsu Stars is being dumpstered, China is making their own little girl idol shows, and now all this? According to rumors on the grapevine, little kids in Japan were polled recently and one of their most desired dreamjobs was being a youtube/nico idol. I can well see this venture being ludicrously lucrative and an easy sell for execs and suits, leading to more second-rate pretend nuidols like this. Combined with the tidal wave of popularity that Kizuna Ai, Kaguya Luna, and the other virtual idols are experiencing, this is all very worrying for the future of IT and other regular real idol shows. Very worrying indeed.

Even in the best case scenario, in which both IT and this run concurrently, that only means the budget will be stretched on both. One thing is for certain though. I will be apocalyptically turbo supreme wonderful mega miracle buttmad if it all ends and we don't get to see any more of Shuuka or Garumadeggon.

The sentiment in Japan is that Yui just doesn't have as much MC aura as Lala, which is super true. She hasn't done anything by herself in IT since the first cour, and ever since has simply stood in Lala's shadow like a background character. The other members of My Dream, while cool, simply took too long to get off the ground. They didn't even form their team till episode 36, wasn't it? That's far too long. Couple that with wasting a wee bit too much time on throwback episodes with Dressing Pafe, Garumageddon, Tricolores, ICHIBAN, etc etc, and Grand Prix spam (boring!), and so far the entire first season has just been a bit meandering. You don't spend 30 full episodes doing jackshit with your new cast before suddenly throwing the switch on the plot and MC torch-pass and expect everything to be a-okay.

Takaratomy played it too safe by bringing in Lala to IT. It's obvious they didn't want to break clean away from her, because she has 10 billion percent more brand recognition than Yui, and is simply a better character, but in doing so they ironically enough helped kill the show.

I am mad. Mad about Yui bringing the whole goddamn show down, literally. Also her song fucking SUCKS.
