Nowadays most producers don't want to appeal to consumers' hotblooded spirits. They don't need to make more people manly and proper.
They need something that is cheap to make and is easy sell. Moeshit. Haremshit. Isekaishit. You don't really need new content, you don't cool designs, plot and ideas to make these popular. Of course, there are very few exceptions, but I am talking about the majority of those.
In the past two decades, we have too much weak boys as mecha pilots thank you, evangelion, thank you, gundam to serve as self-inserts for potential kids watching the shows. It's like the mcs' young age is an excuse for making them a mess and not wasting any resources to do interesting ones .
What was the latest new and original mecha show? Knights & Magic? The one with most likely the worst OP and ED of that season?
The one about random quiet software developer becoming a isekai trap boypussy shota that gets superior magic powers and tries to be some hot shit in his samurai-ninja-oni-robot-with-Aquarion's-head-and-2-ultra-mega-power-generators-from-2-giant-rare-creatures-whom-the-boy-obliterated, all while being surrounded by shallow and unpolished characters that can be defined in 2-3 tropes and those would be their full characterization. It's like someone took the concept of a mecha genre and made it a shitty mess. The worst part about it is that lots of people liked it inb4 >muh tastes are superior , and some only complained about the pacing or really irrelevant shit.
I might be not bitching about some nips going full-jew and trying to make as more yens as possible if we were having relatively fine and interesting series with humongous robots (real robots or super robots, I love them all), at least 1 per season, but we are not having them, and I am pissed off.

I'd be happy if they just dropped the obsession with humanoid mech designs. They don't make any sense, scientifically or militarily, and hence require a level of suspension of disbelief that I just can't muster for a supposedly sci-fi show.
Magical girl shows get a pass because at least the characters in those are cute and attractive. Most mecha has boring characters and implausible plots.
The giant humanoid robot trope has been abused by so many shows, both western and eastern, that I just can't take it seriously any more.

But that's the conceit of the genre, you have to take the idiosyncrasy for granted. If you don't like giant robots you don't like mecha. It's like saying you don't like fantasy because it never features a realistic depiction of medieval European feudal social attitudes or the actual place creatures like orcs and elves would have in those kinds of societies. Sci-Fi and Fantasy are about accepting the impossible elements in their stories to communicate the themes and messages that the authors intend for the audience. Science fiction isn't fiction that features science, it's about science that's fictional.

Good sci-fi, just like good fantasy, has a sufficient combination of realism, engaging story, and good characters to make you overlook the unrealistic bits or even make you enjoy them. I watch enough fantasy and magical girl stuff to know that I can willingly suspend my disbelief for a good story. The problem comes when the the plot and characters themselves fail to be engaging or enjoyable. This seems to happen a lot more often with material marketed at the teenage male audience, such as mecha, because writers feel that cool robots and explosions are enough to satisfy them.
Of course it's also possible to have a completely realistic story which is boring. In fact, a certain level of unrealism is necessary because the real world is shit.

Magical Girl fan here. Can confirm, Precure being the only exception because it's made for little girls, but mecha fans don't have something like that.
Even more than Madoka, there was another which changed Magical Girl stuff forever, and that was Sailor Moon. I'm also an Original Magical Girl fan, and this Sentai shit is all people ever think about Magical Girls now. Miracle Girls was one of the last true Magical Girl shows before everything was about transforming or fighting evil. Even Fancy Lala had the "dual life" thing going because of Sailor Moon, but that gets a pass because the original idea was thought up back in the 80's with Fashion Lala.

Super Robot Mecha anime was always more about being in control of terrifying powers that could destroy the world, but using it to protect it instead. It was this way since Mazinger Z. I think people have forgotten the core of what the genre is about, and the awe-inspiring nature of Super Robots.

Sci-fi is supposed to be science with some unexplained or new "element" to make all the impossible science possible. Like having a warp drive or something, the concept is feasible but we assume that some as of yet undiscovered thing enable it to work in that universe. For example the replicants in blade runner. Obviously we can't make them right now, but the concept is feasible and makes sense. Likewise in mecha as long as the designs aren't wacky enough to break your suspension of disbelief, then it works.

It's mecha in the most basic definition possible. It has giant things that fight, one being piloted by a person, that's about all it has that qualifies as mecha.

I want more military and war focused mecha anime. Ones that go into strategy and logistics of war besides the usual character focus. I want to see more stuff like votoms, but with a focus on the actual fighting and combined arms with mecha being more like bipedal IFVs that still rely on infantry, air support, and artillery to get things done.
Also, I want to see someone like Erwin Rommel in charge of a mecha division.

This is particularly true for AI where futurism and new age scifi tropes dominate the discussion despite the existential problems behind it remaining unanswered thus far. It's still not even certain that its even theoretically possible to create true AI from all the unanswered, potentially even unanswerable, questions raised by Godelian mathematics.

Interestingly enough, much of our current Physics is just like that. For instance, for some time it was theorised that Dark Matter and Dark Energy were an absolute certainty for the Universal Dynamics, scientists were so sure they would find them that it was as good as ready to put that in documentaries, sci-fi, and teach it in schools.
But then, last year came and they discovered that, wait, Dark Matter doesn't exist! And it was preached as settled science!
Science today is very close to sci-fi.
