Hey, so I noticed something about the structure of the story: the New World stuff is basically a sort of retelling of the pre-time skip stuff.

I honestly still prefer Pekoms. He has a DF, there were a lot of great panels with him, I like his design, and his gimmick where he tries to take off his glasses to look intimidating but it has the opposite effect. With a DF, Haki and Electro he would have been a triple threat.

Carrot seems way more likely at this point, though. I also think Nami will end up taking Big Mom's homies. I mean we already saw her use one, it's been foreshadowed the entire arc that she can control them, and both Zeus and Prometheus are currently ignoring BM and off doing their own thing.

I had mixed feelings, mostly positive. I think the reveal of Gear 2 was one of the big important milestones for the series. In the beginning it was just this light-hearted pirate adventure series. I didn't think Luffy would really power up with new techniques or anything to that extent. I was simultaneously nervous and impressed, I thought the Blueno fight was awesome. Like, this series is growing up and going in a more serious direction, but retaining it's humor.

Then I had this fear that it was going to turn into typical shonen power level shit, but it didn't. Even with Gear 4 he still comically bounced around everywhere. He looked like a balloon with muscles. The tone has remained great all throughout.

For those saying that X will join, just remember that they JUST got jimby. They got their base crew together before timeskip and it took so god damn long for them to just get one more new crewmember. I seriously doubt that they will start adding people to crew and end up shoving them off to the Straw Hat Reserves like they did with so many other guys. Way back before the arc came out, Oda was asked in an interview who would join next since it had been so long since anyone new joined the crew. Oda responded that it would happen in this arc and it would be "one after the other" so we're getting two crew members this arc.

Technically, I think it was an unfair question. With the grand fleet and all these alliances literally thousands of new characters have joined the crew.

We just had several chapters showing that Jimbei role in the crew is as the helmsman, and he's some sort of master sailor who can manipulate the whole ship by himself. Well, that's seriously moments before they get their shit wrecked over and over again. You know how Kuma's on the island with them? He's waiting until after they beat Moriah, and then he's going to attack the crew. The fight's really rough and undermines the whole "They never lose" thing. Zoro does something pretty fucked too. After this is when they go on to the arc that leads directly to the two year time skip. Suffice to say, they're going to go somewhere and get completely raped by the world governnment. Then they'll be separated and Luffy will have three back to back arcs by himself. The third of which is still considered one of the best arcs in the series (Marineford.) Then post-timeskip.

Everything after Thriller Bark and up to the timeskip is an incredible ride. The fights, the danger, the massive brawls. It made picking up One Piece so late absolutely worth it.

Nope, Oda planned all of this out from the beginning, if anything he's had the opposite problem. He had an ending planned out from chapter 1, he plans to end it with a specific shot. Lots of people think it's going to be Luffy giving the straw hat to some other kid. He's stated in interviews the One Piece is a thing, it's an actual treasure, it's not something lame like "friendship" or "the journey itself was the treasure". He's stated his problem is every time he writes an arc he comes up with new ideas, new characters, new stories to tell, and every time this happens the series becomes longer. I think the example he usually gives is the Shichibukai, but honestly I'm forgetting the specifics. I can't recall if it was supposed to be less initially, or if they were supposed to be what the Yonkos are now or what, but basically when he started writing them he kept adding more and each one needed to be addressed and that made for new arcs.

The episode director for 817 is Miho Hirayama, to my knowledge he/she is a relatively new director.

He/she has done some work on Precure,Sailor Moon Crystal, and recently done OP episode 790, 806 and 817.

In fairness, everyone's had a little moment or two this arc. Chopper was with Brook when they stalled those two, he's also the one who captured Brulee, and that's what saved everyone's asses and allowed Pedro to alluh ackbar twice. Carrot just had her moment, Jimbe saved Pekoms, saved Luffy & Nami, destroyed BM's underwater den den mushi network, arranged and finalized Luffy's alliance with Bege and Cae- Gastino and used his fishman powers to ride the inside of BM's typhoon. Sanji facilitated the alliance with G-66, seduced Pudding and baked that delicious cake. Nami took control of BM's homies, helped Luffy win the fight with Cracker (he would have lost without her) and took over Zeus, probably permanently.

I actually had hope that Sanji would be the MVP of Tottoland, since I thought that Luffy would fight BM. I really thought that Sanji would get the big knockdown drag out fight that Zoro usually gets. It's a little strange to me that Sanji was part of the "Monster trio" when he's always been more of the solid all rounder than a beast. He's got the skills to brawl, handle crowds and get to where he needs to be, while also being charismatic and intelligent enough to pull off subterfuge and lead the group. Him not being part of the worst generation indicates this too, with Luffy and Sanji recognised as freakishly strong while he's ignored. I like Sanji when his broad skillset is in play more than having him just fight a guy for a few chapters.

Nami and Brook are really getting the spotlight time they've sorely lacked for hundreds of chapters. Name getting her hands on Zeus is potentially a massive powerup for her... Brook is less of a hard counter to her and more a hard disruption because he can circumvent her powers with ease and wound her homies. He's got the perfect powerset to interrupt her offence constantly while lacking the power to put a dent on her. I still reckon this'll end with Luffy vs Katakuri being the major fight while the Strawhats succeed in pacifying Big Mom into a food coma.

One Piece Chapter 891 Spoilers

The chapter should drop tomorrow. Early spoilers:

Mirror world, Luffy is struggling against Katakuri. The fight is being watched by 15 year old Charlotte Furenpe, who is apparently head of the Katakuri fan club. She orders her underlings to attack Luffy as she's upset Katakuri hasn't defeated him yet. The others say it's not that Luffy is winning, he's just stubborn.

Luffy remembers Rayleigh's words and tries again and again to use his haki to predict the future. While with a low probability of success, he begins deflecting Katakuri's attacks this way which causes him to freak out.

We cut to Sanji who has just finished the cake. Pudding has a tsundere moment and says even though the cake is finished it's too late. Sanji says "No matter what happens, I have to go there. Creating the perfect and cake and stopping Big Mom is what…" cuts back to Luffy who says " After defeating you, I have to come out from the mirror since this is what…" split panel of them both at the same time: "They’re trusting me to do!"

We cut back to the Sunny, still just barely fending off Big Mom, but then a ship appears giving off the unmistakable scent of cake!

ONE PIECE IS ON BREAK NEXT WEEK

Prediction: Big Mom's gonna fuck up some of her own crew on the way to the cake. Either she kills Perospero for lying to her, or one of her kids stupidly tries to destoy the cake or otherwise prevent her from eating it fearing it could be poisoned. Also, Bege needs to get it off his ship. We know what happens when BM eats in this state, she'll eat the whole ship and everyone on it.

You'd be forgiven for not thinking that's the case just because we had nearly a year where Sanji was hardly around and the entire focus was "fight this new Charlotte family member for a while!" in between bouncing between the dozens of events happening all at once.

Even the Katakuri fight falls into this problem, as it has dragged on for months and months with the end only recently becoming visible, while Sanji only really started baking the cake and making it clear the way to victory was through his cooking skills a handful of chapters ago.

The donut scene was the best part of his character so far. That's what switched him from "overpowered mirror villain" to "one piece character". It's why one of the reasons the series has remained so consistently good, because it doesn't take itself seriously and always has a good sense of humor. And it made him look even more ruthless because he killed the guys who made him food just for having seen him eat.

It's like with Gear 4, I was so worried before I saw it that it was going to spell out the end, that it was just all going to be pointless powerups with no personality from there on, but then I actually saw it and all my fears were put to rest. I think an anti-climactic ending would piss off to many people. If it all just stopped and no one really "wins" people will be pissed. Even if Big Mom is taken out of the picture, the Strawhats will still need to fight their way out. In the aftermath, I could see Big Mom changing her tune, but upon further consideration, I can't see this arc ending with Big Mom saying "I'm good now, so you can leave."

Either she dies from the cake being too delicious and the ensuing chaos gives the Strawhats and allies an out (and also puts the blame on Bege and the Firetanks) or she passes out from it being so delicious.. Perhaps, in her rush to devour the cake, she takes and eats a few of her own ships. The other likely possibility is that it's so tasty that it causes her powers to go completely fucking nuts. The other thing we're forgetting is that the Germa are still around. We haven't seen what they've been up to for several months now, but it's clear that all this tension about the Strawhats being cornered by Big Mom's entire fleet, plus Oven waiting for them and Luffy outside the only mirror he can escape from, and having seemingly no other way out is going to be resolved by Sanji and the Germa clearing the path for them. They even went out of their way to dump Sanji back onto the Thousand Sunny.

Sanji's background was always vague and full of holes. Like they even pointed out in the reveal: It was kind of a big deal that he was even on some random cruise ship in the first place. And his bounty was always 'Alive' and he went out of his way to hide his identity. These things getting revealed would have only been made better if we heard about the Germa earlier or had any reason to believe that Sanji being as strong as he is was somehow special (even though it's not)

Zoro's backstory is already laid out. He was a kid who loved swords, invented his own retarded style because he refused to give up, dealt with tragedy at an early age, and after becoming a pirate hunter, swore himself to become as strong as possible for Luffy's sake because he wants to see that lovable retard become Pirate King. Everything else has been on the page. He got stronger because he faced greater and greater hardships, and then later trained under one of the greatest swordsmen in the world.

There's no special bloodline there or mysterious past. Nami is really the only one whose origins are a mystery (some random orphan brought home by a navy lady), but we've got no reason to believe that Zoro's past goes any deeper than we've already seen.

I think it's going to go like this. We just got Sanji powered up, during his arc Nami and Brook underwent massive powerups so they probably won't for a while but there's still room for them to do so.

Zoro will be next, Ussopp and the others with him will probably have their own little power ups but Ussopp will probably get his major development in Elbaf. Maybe he'll drink the liquid that makes the giants grow (I know there's going to be something like this, there's so many characters particularly in the Marines who are extremely tall but not quite giant. I think it might have to do with Awakening since every giant person has had awakened DF powers (Doflamingo, all the Admirals, Whitebeard, Katakuri, etc.) He'll also probably have a confrontation of some sort with his dad.

Franky might undergo some more character growth in Elbaf as well, let's not forget that's where the tree the Sunny was made out of came from. It might need to be replaced or repaired by the time they get there.

Of course I'm basically just dropping a personal wishlist at this point. I'd like for Robin, Franky, Ussopp and Chopper to have major power ups and serious fights, but that seems unlikely. They'll probably just get more gag fights and Robin will do some new incredible thing no one will notice that everyone'll deny later.

I mean, look at everything she can do now. Flight, teleportation, phasing, creating full body duplicates of herself, creating giant versions of herself, regenerating from virtually any wound. If she develops armament haki everyone is DONE.

If you recall, Lola was arranged to marry Prince Loki of the Elbaf Giants, but instead chose to run away. But maybe it wasn't her decision to flee from the wedding -- maybe the giants chose not to associate with the Big Mom pirates.

The giants didn't realize that when they had arranged the marriage of their son with the Big Mom pirates, that they were dealing with Charlotte Linlin, a woman they found so disgusting that they vowed never to speak her name.

If the Giants backed out of the marriage, this would mean war with the Big Mom pirates.On the other hand, if the bride-to-be fled, well, it could be just a deal that went bad. No harm done.

Lola, upon learning the truth, decides to leave. And, most likely, top members of the Charlotte family (Perospero and Katakuri) know the truth as well, and have arranged to keep the truth from Big Mom out of fear of what might happen were she to learn.

Katakuri and Luffy's beef is almost inconsequential to the rest of the events. It mostly serves as an excuse to demonstrate, yet again, that the New World ain't nothin' to fuck with, but also give Luffy a reason to sharpen up some of the powers he hasn't been using to their fullest. Katakuri's stake in all of this is personal pride. We're not even sure if he actually likes most of his family or not, but he'd probably rather keep most of them alive because that's easier for him than trying to go it alone.

That's been my problem. This isn't a fair fight between two evenly matched opponents. It's Katakuri beating the shit out of Luffy for what feels like the past year. Understandably, Oda needed to set up everything that was going on outside of the mirror world and we were told a long time ago that Luffy needed to stall for hours, but things really needed to be lightened up just a bit. From the way things are going, Luffy should be on death's doorstep right now. He's got a mortal wound, every single time he tries to attack, he gets pummeled with a better, stronger version of his own techniques, Katakuri's barely been hit at all, not counting the wound he gave himself.. And now Luffy is finally going to unleash a new technique that gives him the ability to hit Katakuri and take him out after he's been pummeled in a one-sided fight for hours.

Also, I was reminded earlier that Luffy has dealt with this shit before. He taught himself to go empty headed to dodge Enel's attacks to counter his Mantra predictive powers, allowing him to avoid entirely by instinct with quasi-haki powers before we knew haki was a thing. I feel like that's something we should have revisited for this fight.

Well, I'm glad I was wrong about it being an off week, but I'm underwhelmed by Snakeman's reveal being Boundman, but smaller, and now Luffy's punches can change trajectory at increasing speeds.

Luffy has shown some inventiveness with his gumgum powers in the past. Even Boundman is pretty nuts when you look at the way he moves and attacks by compressing in on himself. I was just hoping we'd see Luffy go the opposite and go completely loose, release the tension and turn into a slippery noodleman who is impossible to hit because he's constantly wiggling around to subconsciously dodge everything.

It's some combination of Monkey family toughness, Will of D plot armor, and Gumgum powers allowing him to "bounce" back from these hits. Were it anyone else, every bone in their body would have been broken hours ago.

Same. Only thing about Snakeman that's interesting is the hair. I mean, I kind of expected a slimmer boundman at least but with rubbery noodle arms that moved around like snakes or something. Or stretched out limbs or a neck like the snakenecks, or that he maybe took some inspiration from Sandersonia's snake form. Would've showed that Luffy had gained greater control of his rubber powers akin to maybe capeshit's Plastic Man.
