I have been thinking about this for some time, and this thread is the perfect place to vent my autism. It is about how Megumin and Darkness evolved(or didn't) as characters throughout the series. I believe that a character is more nuanced or "real" if he has some story arcs that he completes and changes as a result, either for the better or for the worse. It would demonstrate that he learns from his trials and evolves as a character. I believe that after 11 volumes(waiting for the translation of 12) only Darkness has evolved as a character, whereas Megumin hasn't, and no falling in love with Kazuma and developing a relationship with him, doesn't count, especially since that is also true for Darkness. I spoilered most of the stuff, out of sympathy pity for those who haven't read the LNs, but I see little to no point in reading my post.
Let's start with Darkness the hardcore pervert crusader, her major volumes would be 3(the one with Vanir and is also the first half of season 2), 7(the one where she has to marry that lord to repay the debt) and I heard that 12 as well, but again I haven't read it. Both volumes dealt with her double life, the one of Darkness the adventurer, and Lalatina the noblewoman, and yes there is a bit more to them, but I want to keep this thing as short as possible. Basically, she learned is to accept the responsibilities of a lord and to trust her companions a bit more. In volume 8(the festival) we see her administrating the festival, making sure that everything will go out smoothly, in volume 9 she administrates the fortress that is under siege, in volume 10 she gathers information about the prince and I think, it's in a short story where she uses deception to win a game of chess against Kazuma and in volume 11 uses her position to have some children write letters to Kazuma and Aqua in order to motivate the two of them. She is also more confident in her body, actually using it as a weapon to distract Kazuma in volume 10 in order to drug him, her fetish is more under control, as proof I'd say in volume 7 where she is struggling against the Hydra, not because she wants get beaten for her masochistic pleasures, but because she needed the money for her father. Even her role as crusader, isn't random and shows that she wants to protect the weak and it's in tune with her family that represents the "shield of the country".
Basically, it went from the insecure, hardcore pervert, Darkness that wanted to escape her responsibilities and just fight get beaten up by monsters in volume 1, to the confident Lalatina that does what she has to do and isn't ashamed of her name or body in volume 11.
Now Megumin, the greatest arch-wizard of the Crimson Clan Mages and wielder of the most powerful explosion magic known to man, Explosion. Her major volumes would be 5(where she helps save her village), 9(where she confronts her mentor, the one who taught her Explosion magic) and maybe 11(where she demonstrates her role in the party to her sister). The problem is that the events in 5 and 9 should have marked her as a character, but they really didn't. In 5, the villagers find out that she learned the most useless spell in history and scorn her, as the most useless and retarded mage in their clan, towards the end this affected her a bit and was about to learn Advanced magic, but Kazuma thought that it would be better if she just continued to focus on Explosion magic thus she remained the same. Volume 9, she fights against the one who taught her Explosion magic and surpassed her, this also should have marked her, as now she is the greatest Explosion magic wielder in existence, but it didn't since she still uses Explosion and still loves it, maybe a bit more than in Volume 1. Volume 11, I guess she failed to show off her important role to her sister. The only thing that changed, besides falling in love with Kazuma(which is also true for Darkness), is that she found a family and made friendship necklaces for all of them, but the description that I gave about her at the beginning of the paragraph is the same description that she has at volume 11, she is the same Megumin from volume 1, as she is in volume 11, only that she has a more powerful Explosion. Some might say that I have to read Continuing to gift Explosions(which I admit I haven't read) and let's say that her character changes there, or that she becomes more mature, but again why do I need to do that when Darkness evolved fine, without two spinoff series.

The haremshit is minimal and mostly self aware, with Kazuma saying stuff like "I am on the Megumin route" or "have I started the Darkness route as well", I can't really comment on cliches since I am bad at finding them, but it's still a comedy with fun adventures. I think the only volume where no action takes place is 8, because that is one giant it's the festival and we should watch the fireworks, episode. I especially like in 10, where they go to Las Vegas Elroad and three young noblemen invite the girls to a date, and Kazuma literally pushes the girls to the guys, so as not to cause him any trouble and leave him in debt. After that he goes sightseeing and wins a game of Yu-Ghi-Oh. His instincts were right of course, since one of the guys ended up in hospital, the second one got traumatized and the third one ended in debt.

Cutting out entire chapters from the LN like first encounter with Wiz or Kazuma's party swap can be done without affecting the story at large and is a necessity, but they also cut out things that are relatively short and easy to get across but are still relevant, like what that crystal Megumin gets from her first fight against Yunyun is or the conversation Kazuma has with the Elf and the Dwarf in Arkanlaetia about the quality of the hot springs.

I agree that it did cut some jokes and scenes, but on the other hand it did add some as well, like Aqua trying to warm herself by burning Kazuma's trenchsuit, or Kazuma getting his new sword and stumbling around the weapon shop. I guess this is because they always need to have a 20 minute episode, whereas a chapter could be any number of pages, so you sometimes have to cut bits or add other stuff in order to fill in the 20 minute episode. One thing, I found it weird is how they changed the second encounter with YunYun, from a fair where Kazuma wins a Winter Shogun/Jack Frost toy and gives it to YunYun, to them going to Wiz's shop and using a magic crystal to show their deep dark fantasies secrets. I guess this was also done in order to introduce Komeko much earlier in the story. In fact they did something similar to Darkness where she reveal herself to Kazuma when the Destroyer attacked(anime) instead of when she had to marry that lord(Volume 3 LN, Season 2 anime).

Is it just me, or is Kazuma too much of a beta male in S2? S1 he was fairly dominant, taking a few scores and taking control. In season 2, the girls do everything, and he dies. It got a little boring. Does it get better?

He has his badass moments in Volume 6 when he is jacked up on magic, and defeats all the elite guards of the capital, including his party members all by himself and in Volume 10 where he uses his luck to almost bankrupt an entire nation, just by gambling at the state-run casino.

They also knew exactly how each of these aspects played into the story. It's an inherently comedic work that has its serious moments, and it's a mark of skill that they use the QUALITY to improve the quality. Half of the fun of having read the LNs is to imagine how a particular scene would be animated, and most of the tragedy of having S3 in limbo is knowing that you'll likely never see future scenes animated at all.
