Just finished this. Am I a basic bitch, or was it really boring? Nothing really happened. Characters would meet up, talk, then disperse. Then a little bit later meet up and talk again. The story doesn't really go anywhere. I don't feel like Tsukasa really went anywhere either. In the end he kind of just went, "Time to wake up heh" and then it ended. I can't help but feel like I wasn't in on a joke. It wasn't esoteric like Serial Experiments Lain, just boring and mildly confusing. Are the other series worth watching?

Also Mimiru best girl.

I thought it was really deep and cool. When I was 12.

Good soundtrack, though.

Play .hack//infection to get the full story.

Legend of Twilight is fun.

Roots is okay, if you watch it in conjunction with the G.U. Trilogy adaptation of the G.U. games story. Otherwise it leaves without conclusion for the G.U. games to pick up.

Honestly if you feel like it just skip Roots and skip straight to G.U. Trilogy, Shino is worst girl anyways.

>Legend of Twilight is fun.

Unfortunatley the anime is not canon as it deviated too much from the manga. Read the Legend of Twilight manga.

>Good soundtrack, though.

I listened to it for months after getting my hands on a few assorted MP3s off some filesharing program.

 No.760833

Awful and boring. I don't even remember anything about the show other than the character being named Tsukasa, and that's only becaue my brother kept telling me "Tsukasa es Mi Casa" anytime the name was said.

It's better than SAO.

.hack//sign best .hack

Probably the only realistic portrayal of an mmo in anime.

The admins are useless and don't understand how their own game works, the mods have no real power and are just a drama and circlejerk club, that one mod has a major hate boner for this one random guy for no real reason, and the regular players treat the game as a glorified chat room and never actually play the game.

It's slow, 95% talking and the music and ambiance are the only things holding it together. I enjoy it but I wouldn't want to watch another show like it.

It was enjoyable the first time because it hit the right points about playing MMOs with your friends, but as a stand alone series it's pretty boring. That said, MMOs are pretty boring 80% of the time so they got it right mostly.

 No.760927

The reason .hack is remembered is because it pioneered the trapped in a game setting. That's it.

How in the fuck.

And it was only one character that was trapped. It's funny how SAO gets all the glory for being another dime and dozen MMO anime.

>>761192

Sora then got out of a coma with Amnesia and came back as Haseo.

I enjoyed Sign for its music and mood. I certainly wouldn't make someone watch it for fun.

It is dialogue driven, just like MMOs are. It isn't the "le shounen SAO ripoff" you were probably hoping for. Seeing it in that light, you should be able to give it that much more credit as a series.

This is the best review of this anime I've seen.

I think it is a strength that it portrays the MMO fanbase realistically, as it makes it more "ordinary" feeling and relatable. It makes the fantasy atmosphere of the game and the area music stand out much more, which were of course another strength of the series, so I think it's a win over all, speaking of it as a production.

Though YK did say in an interview that she was confused and a little bothered by the fact that the director fell so hard for one of the hooks in a particular song she wrote for the series (you know, the one with that flute going apeshit) and just spammed the hell out of it every episode.

Yuki Kaijura collection I will be seeding until I die, and then for another month or so until the electricity is shut off.

The major difference between SAO and .hack// is that the creator of SAO doesn't know shit about videogames.

The creator of .hack// played a lot of Phantasy Star Online years ago. Actually, Phantasy Star online was the major inspiration behind .hack//.

 No.761236

>>761230

Correct. Don't know shit about videogames or the people who play them with any dedication.

>>761232

I believe it. Cool that they could take inspiration and make something original from it, I always felt the .hack character designs/costumes were very plausible for an MMO.

 No.761237

>>761232

It's Phantasy Star Online, Ultima Online and Final Fantasy 11 as their source of inspiration. The creator of .hack// seemed to like playing MMOs.

 No.761285

Yeah same, I think I eventually dropped it after a dozen or so episodes. I usually love these slow atmospheric anime but this was just boring. Still listening to the OST though, Key of the Twilight is amazing.

 No.761305

You are slightly pleb tier, but you also need to understand its place in media at the time. A lot of mmos were just sadnboxes. Theres shit to do but nothing to force you to do it. Nowadays mmorpgs are jobs where you have time locked weekly shit to do to progress and everything is part of the job.

Back in the day the aimless standing around and talking was part of the mmo experience, like a chat room but with avatars. Every so often someone would just disappear or you would find out that behind the character was a really damaged person and //SIGN really captures this well. These people don't know the MC is a young girl in an abusive family whos not dealing well being a japanese lesbian. Especially being pre tumblr where being gay is fetishised nowadays. The character is a mess and ends up caught up some fantastical bullshit and in the mindset of a 1990's mmo how do the cast know "he" isn't some chhuni tryhard?

Its about the directionless feelings of youth reaching adulthood through the medium of the mid 90's sandbox mmorpg. Its meant to be thoughtful and slow.

I imagine if you are only used to modern mmos or trash like SAO it would be torture to watch but that could just be a case of expecting something very different than what it is.
