What you call "reciprocating" in this case is basically just being a spineless doormat. Too afraid to face negativity when rejecting someone, you smile and nod and tell them you love them too. What you apparently haven't considered is how you will meet your responsibilities when loving more than one person. A real man recognizes his responsibilites and understands that his time and energy are limited. A real man understands that spinelessly accepting every love confession will ultimately bring about more negativity than simply saying "I'm sorry, I can't because I've already committed my time and energy to someone else".
