Well, I'm excited. I kept myself in the dark about the light novel and manga for years just in case something like this happened. This is a series I was really into years ago, so hopefully the continuation doesn't disappoint me and avoiding the supplementary media was worth it.

I would have liked for this thread to have some more discussion, but there isn't much to discuss about the new season until it comes out.

I noticed that the mech battle scenes seem to be animated in 3D instead of the 2D animation from series prior. Sure, there was 3D animation in FMP, but it was never used for the characters themselves. I prefer the traditional style, but this new 3D style is at least presentable.

I don't know how to feel about this. They honestly better not fuck it up. Also Chidori's hair does not seem nearly voluminous enough. (They kind of missed her eyes, too). But wasn't it delayed because they were dissatisfied with the animation quality? Maybe they're trying to unfuck the 3D/ her hair.

I don't think the 3d is all that bad, but it's a jarring change. The 2d was superior because every frame was filled with passion instead of awkward inbetweens that 3d is often known for. In regards to Chidori; I agree her hair seems more stringy and frizzy than it has any right to be, but the eyes seem good to me. I think you could chalk that up to "advancing styles". Maybe the winter air is dry and effects her hair's volume? I'm just trying to find excuses. I miss the old hair. I wish you didn't point it out to me, because I don't like it.

Exactly! Judging by the trailers (well, as far as you can judge anything by its trailers) the 3D is actually pretty good as far as 3D goes. But at the end of the day, it doesn't have the passionate refinement, or the seamless blending of 2D. At the end of the day, seeing 3D in anime always has the uncanniness of seeing some 4-dimensional eldritch abomination in 3D world, no matter how much you polish it.

Trust me Anon, I didn't like it either when my brain pointed it out to me. That's why I had to get it out of my system. Her hair seems to be the wrong shade of blue, too (but I guess I come up with excuses too, and atribute it to the lighting).

I find it kind of funny, too; because they did a pretty good job of the rest of the characters.

Don't get me wrong though. I don't mean to nitpick. The thing is, I'm rather unreasonably passionate about FMP. Maybe partly because I find Sousuke the anime embodiment of /k/ and its autism. Partly because of their attention to detail in every anime adaptation so far, and partly because it was a solid, enjoyable series all around. So I can't help but have very high expectations from IV.

Well, at the end of the day, as long as they get Sousuke and his autism right, I'm probably gonna love it, and the fact that, at least according to Kadokawa, it got delayed so that they could improve the quality and put more effort into it, really gets my hopes up that they're gonna polish the rough edges and deliver something enjoyable.

I agree with this mostly, however I think 3D can be used to great effect in creating dynamic backgrounds. Attributes like depth, shading and uniformity are more readily accomplished in 3D; however I also recognize that many styles would look worse with a 3D background because many styles do not use those elements prominently. And, since there's so much bad 3D out there, it kind of tarnishes the artform in general.

I'm also a huge fan of this series; I was going to read the manga and light novels after I finished the anime for the first time 8 or 9 years ago; but I wanted to patiently wait and see for a continuation. So i'm going in blind, which is really exciting. Did you read the light novels/manga? I've heard that they are different from each other. And the second post in this thread was a question regarding the legitimacy of using the source material or this being a new side story.

Yeah, I guess I kind of exaggerated the whole thing about CGI. But with the massive amount of jarring 3D you see out there these days, which I think has kind of lowered the visual quality of anime as a whole, it's kind of become a knee jerk reaction with me. Whether FMP is gonna benefit from it or not remains to be seen. Judging by the trailers again, I can't rule out the (frankly good) possibility that this is one of those rare cases.

No, I haven't either, so I'm going in blind, too. I've toyed with the idea of reading the LN for years, too, but at the end of the day the desire to wait and be surprised by a new anime series, or even just a movie, won each time. Same thing with Spice and Wolf, too. It's a gamble that rarely pays off, but the payoff is worth it.

Judging by other anons' reactions who have read the LN/ manga, it seems like a good thing, too. Authors of long-runnig series sometimes lose track of what made the whole work good at the first place. The anime creators persumably had more time to think it through. So I'm gonna trust the anons' judgement on this one.

Maybe in 2D animated films. Animation for shows on TV are hardly that "filled with passion". Most of the time it's animated by teams of stressed out key and in-between animators who have to meet a deadline.

Japan's 3D is just sub par because they're late on the game and haven't been refining it. You can make some decent animation with 3D, hell you can even squash, stretch, smear and deform if you want to.

One thing that bothers me with the CG animation in the two videos posted are the character animations. They're animated at a lower framerate and it looks fucking weird compared to the smooth animations of the mechas and vehicles.

Otherwise, it's a passable mimicry of 2D animation. It's in this weird limbo where it doesn't take advantage of 3D and tries to give itself 2D limits which makes it mediocre, in my opinion.
