It couldn't have worked any way except the way it was. The whole show had this quirky, kitschy quality that wouldn't have worked with a long, overreaching plot that took itself too seriously. It's Rule of Cool with an 80's aesthetic; it's the kind of thing you would get if Robocop were made into an anime.

>>745462
That's what happens when old Sunrise/"Hajime Yatate" works on the show.
Sometimes the quality of the episode shifts mid-episode and some episodes are like night & day in terms of quality. Watch episode 7 and 8 back to back and see QUALITY on 7 at almost all times of the episode and 8 is pristine. The art style changes almost between every episode. The last 2 episodes look like they were made by the same team allowing for one final note of consistency.
No.745911
Sometimes the QUALITY just sneaks up on you. Reusing shots of melfina when she's linked to the ship is not a big deal. But sometimes they try to draw the same shot and leave it unfinished.

The Caster Gun was pretty cool, until Gene pulled that typical shounen bullshit of surviving multiple uses of the dangerous shells, like he was specifically told was impossible to do.
It was also one of those shows where the backstory implied a plot that seemed a lot more interesting than what we actually got. Like those slides in the ending credits. The fuck was all that stuff about, and how did precisely NONE of it figure into the plot??

The might be the main reason I dislike Outlaw Star. The writer's inability to give him any punishment for using them really ruined the ending, to the point that I don't actually remember what happened in the ending because that overshadowed anything else that happened.

As far as I can recall, it was something like the "treasure" at the center of the Leyline was that it would grant any wish of whoever entered it. Gwen Khan wanted infinite knowledge, so he kinda fused with the Leyline, itself, and became pure information or... something. Hazanko wanted power, so he became some kind of giant physical god that still ended up getting punched to death by Gene and the ship. And Gene just... I dunno... wished for all that shit to reset and for him to be happy with all his friends and for Melfina to be free of her role as a living compass to the Leyline.

It's in my headcanon that Jim pretended to be more of a kid than he really was, just so he could dangle over Gene's head that he could tap that kitty ass whenever he wanted, but just chose not to do so to spite him.

I want to know what we didn't get and if the ending was different in the manga. Apparently the manga started before the show hence the show being an adaption, and the manga ended almost a year after the show ended. Half the series could have been completely made up in the minds of Sunrise.
