Why was Gundam Wing terrible but had an amazing intro?
No.739481

IDK but it was unbelievably terrible, I loved it as a kid so re-watching it as an adult soured me on anime as a genre.

The mechs and the technology in general in that series looked great. Too bad it was so gay.
Good thing there was G Gundam to fall back on.

That's pretty retarded to be soured on anime by one well known shitty series like Wing.

Isn't Wing the one where they a bunch of people just randomly show up and say that they're gonna War the fuck out of anyone who starts a war, so they can end wars?
No.739577
How do people even make it past the second episode? The first episode, while mediocre, didn't seem that bad. Then the second episode happens and the pure bullshit on both the girl and the MC's part is infuriating. I can't imagine how bad it gets past that as I had to stop after the girl bandages a guy she just met who tried to kill her.

>Why was Gundam Wing terrible but had an amazing intro?
I don't remember the story at all, but I do remember it being pretty cool and Endless Waltz was pretty well liked. The Gundams were also insanely popular. and very recognizable. I remember seeing Deathscythe and Winged Gundams everywhere.
The video isn't quite the amv I remember from my youth, but it is the closest I can find. I might still have the video that I'm thinking of on an old computer or cd somewhere.

>Terrible
They were trying to broaden their audience by attracting more girls. For that, we get more cute boys, more focus on the "princess" and trace elements of shoujo into the art style, design, story and characters. This leads to straightforward fujoshi-bait.
Another weird thing is that on their quest to make the show pretty simple and straightforward for the audience they were going for while still being engaging, the script gets pretty wonky a lot (Gems like "My name is Relena Darlian... What's Yours?", "I'll kill you" and literally everything having "peace" in the name) and many plot points don't make sense because of characters acting weird ( >>739570 ).
>Amazing Intro
Because it's the 80s-90s, when anime getting highly detailed animation and artwork meant that they had to rely on analog methods of putting effects in instead of heavily relying on computers. This leads to stuff like the distinct "glow" on light effects, heavy use of matte backgrounds among other similarly hand-painted elements, and, at least in the case of Wing's opening, having to draw in more frames for some sequences where they upped the framerate or at least make it look like so. Even after an old show gets an HD re-release, it still ends up looking better because the techniques used then was more than what they needed at the time.
Speaking of which, it also helped that the end-result looked good on the display format of the time. A huge problem these days with HD releases is that the higher quality of the medium often isn't in conjunction with the work in production because it just makes all the little mistakes, corner-cutting, and negative quirks of animation much more apparent. That goes especially so now that traditional methods are costly on time and money and that the trend leans more on heavy cost-cutting and cheaper CG'd animation and effects.

And then the actual show is trash because every single solitary fucking god damn battle is the same animation frames with different backgrounds repeated.

Actually, while at that, Gundam X had great story and characters, it could have been the Gundam we have all been asking for, the best of them all, but the sheer amount of disdain Sunrise had for it was appalling as the project was underfunded to the point of it having a lower animation quality than Wing and tons of fucking reused scenes, shamefully it was rushed and axed in the end.

Sorry to (near) doublepost, but note how the bridges and lyrics line up with animation cuts, and as one of the commenters noted:
>"Spread out our wings tonight"
The assault carrier's wings open as he sings this
>"Jump'n off the deck"
Mobile suits launch off the carrier deck
It lends some credit to the fan theory that the intro was originally written and animated for the Top Gun soundtrack. Also here's the second Top Gun OP.

Wing had a ton of memorable mechs and characters. The story was pretty shitty from what I vaguely remember, but it's been a very long time since I've seen it. I never could get into Seed or its sequel, butI did get into Wing. I think G was a better gundam show than those two though. Wing also had some great songs tied to it.

>How do people even make it past the second episode?
Naively hoping things will get better. How people can stand to keep watching after Hiro allahu akbars is beyond me though. After that it becomes plain as day status quo is king and nothing can really happen to the main cast.
