But there are still tons of Touhou fans in Japan, and scattered across the rest of the world. Even if newer games, characters, music, etc, can be hit or miss, and might not achieve the same iconic status as the older classic games, etc., have in the eyes of the fans, ZUN's still putting good stuff out. This is part of what I never liked about Kancolle relative to Touhou. It always was a corporate project. Touhou is this one guy making doujin games for the doujin community. Fans then created their own doujin works, manga, animations, even other doujin games, which could be sold at doujin shops alongside the main games in the series. All of which happened outside of the channels of the "professional" gaming industry, media companies, etc. Though there would be licensed Touhou games, merchandise, the doujin scene was always the core of the phenomenon. While Kemono Friends is a corporate property, it's the fans and their doujin creations that propelled it to popularity, far more than it was ever expected to have.
