Here are some of the films, TV shows & webseries discussed so far, in the WebM threads over at /tv/:

Dracula’s Daughter (1936) – probably the first film to hint at the lesbian vampire trope. A surprisingly good sequel to Universal’s original ‘Dracula’ film in its own right.

The Vampire Lovers (1970) – Hammer’s adaptation of the ‘Carmilla’ novel by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. Arguably the best adaptation of the story, & with some very good performances, especially from Ingrid Pitt as Marcilla/Carmilla. Stars Ingrid Pitt, Madeline Smith & Hammer regular Peter Cushing. Highly recommended; this may just be the best lesbian vampire film out there. Shout! Factory’s Blu-ray release features an audio commentary track with director Roy Ward Baker, (screen) writer Tudor Gates & actress Ingrid Pitt, excerpts from the story read by Ingrid Pitt, and interviews with Madeline Smith and Hammer scholars.

Lust For a Vampire (1971) – The sequel to ‘The Vampire Lovers’, though it disregards continuity somewhat and all main characters are recast. The very interesting audio commentary with Hammer historian Marcus Hearn, director Jimmy Sangster & actress Suzanna Leigh is worth listening to as well. Honourable(?) mention goes to ‘Twins of Evil’ (1971), which is the third and final instalment of Hammer’s ‘Karnstein Trilogy’, though the character of Carmilla is hardly in it at all, and there is nothing sapphic about it all. Worth a watch if you want to see the ever-awesome Cushing as a witch-hunter, and some beautiful twins in various state of undress.

Fucking Åmål aka Show Me Love (1998) – A Swedish award-winning drama directed by Lukas Moodyson that ‘follows the lives of two seemingly disparate teenage girls who begin a tentative relationship’. Captures the feeling of growing up in a small-town in Scandinavia in the late ’90s and the love-troubles of the characters brilliantly and beautifully.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) – a satirical romantic comedy that pokes fun of ‘conversion therapy’/’pray the gay away’ camps. Stars Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall & Cathy Moriarty.

D.E.B.S. (2003) – ‘Made in 2003 right in the middle of the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ resurgance, this cute and clever spoof featuring a team of young and dangerous females clad in plaid mini-skirts stormed Sundance and won its director, Angela Robinson, the chance to make it into a feature – 2004s’s identically-named ‘D.E.B.S.’)’. D.E.B.S by Angela Robinson | Live-Action Short Film: http://archive.is/xd7aQ / Full short film on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/23238222

D.E.B.S. (2004) – Robinson’s feature-length adaptation of her spy-thriller parody short film expands upon the world and characters of the short film, though it does perhaps lack the punch and twist of the short film. Should therefore be viewed after the short film. Stars Sara Foster, Jordana Brewester (from the ‘Fast and the Furious’ series), Meagan Good, Devon Aoki, Jill Ritchie, Jimmi Simpson, Holland Taylor & Michael Clarke Duncan. Jill Ritchie was, sadly, the only member of the cast of the short film to reprise her role (as Janet).

Saving Face (2004) – American drama/comedy. Focuses on the Chinese-American community and their reaction to some unconventional relationships.

Imagine Me & You (2005) – British comedy. Biggest names in it are Lena Heady, Piper Perabo & Anthony Stewart Head.

Natasha (2007) – a comedy/drama/thriller – comedic and light-hearted for the most, and with a very nice small-town English town setting. Sadly the soundtrack ruins what might otherwise have been very sensual scenes.

Cracks (2009) – A dark psychological period drama set in an all girls boarding school. Stars Eva Green, Imogen Poots & Juno Temple.

The Neon Demon (2016) – a psychological horror film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, that focuses on aspiring model Jesse who arrives in LA and crosses paths with ‘a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has’ – and vampires – maybe… Beautiful film (as always by NWR), that is deeper than some reviewers give it credit for. While the original ending was ditched, there are hints at a connection to Elizabeth Báthory/vampires in the film, and in an interview with the DP, Natasha Braier.

Anyone But Me – an original webseries that began in 2008, set in a post 9/11 NY.

Carmilla – Canadian webseries based on J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novel of the same name. This series has been extensively discussed on /tv/, but since there are three seasons (+ season 0), a feature length film, and a prime-time TV show that is in the works, there ought to be a lot more to talk about in-depth.

A bit vary of Franco’s style, and it does seem to be style T&A over substance.

According to Wikipedia the soundtrack for La notte che Evelyn uscì dalla tomba (The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave) by Bruno Nicolai was lifted from his work with Franco on this film.

I knew I forgot to respond to a post somewhere d'oh!

>Looks like we have a long way to go yet ;_;

When she stops doing the absolutely worst movies maybe she'll become more palatable. Fingers crossed for A Simple Favor. Did you end up watching any of the Pitch Perfects?

>Kinda makes me want to play Freud and do a little bit of dream analysis/armchair psychology.

Please do if you feel like it.

>I have a dream journal where I have written down my dreams going back to ’09. There are huge gaps in it though, since I only tend to write down dreams that make an impression.

I have tried multiple times to keep a dream journal and never follow through. So undisciplined. I might try keeping a digital version, just a notepad file somewhere and see if I make progress that way. I'd even completely forgotten about this dream already until I found your post.

>Spencer also views himself as a born leader who could rule the Fourth Reich or whatever he envisions.

Top kek

>Have you seen Near Dark?

4/tv/ webm threads often mentioned it as worthwhile, so I got a copy but still haven't watched it yet.

>I had a similar idea for a vampire story, where vampirism is symbolic of addiction (drugs/alcohol, whatever), and if a vampire stopped drinking blood they would go through withdrawal.

Have you seen Addiction? Pure kino that approaches that side of it while also dropkicking post-modernism to hell. Coincidentally it also stars Lili Taylor (JoJo in Mystic Pizza) and she's also in Ransom with Mel Gibson (which I reckon robertsfag would get a kick out of).

>If they managed to make it thru it without relapsing or dying, they would be cured and human again.

I watched Night Junkies a couple of months ago. B movie that also dealt with the addiction side. I can't remember if they would be cured by not feeding, but they were physically capable of doing it (no starving) but the cravings were overwhelming. You know, the one thing I liked about Daybreakers was the novel sunlight cure and reverse infection being spread to the vampires. I thought that was quite ingenious.

>Oh, and I guess Hemosoy is what the (male) vampires in Twilight must be drinking.

IKR?

>I think that in the US the Australian accent is viewed similarly to how my dialect is over here – a funny-sounding novelty that will get you cast as a goofy, comic relief character.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>Batwoman should have muscles and great endurance and combat skills and agility

100% agree.

>I am so tired of seeing women with no defined muscles or superpowers at all be able to perform these ridiculous athletic feats and beat up guys twice their size – I want realistic fights, same with guys – fights should be hard and brutal and not last minutes.

Also 100% agree. Unless it's purposeful, for example Buffy: waif valley girl juxtaposed with superhuman strength to fight evil, it's annoying as fuck. Give me Ripley struggling to carry her equipment while visibly terrified and still kicking ass or Sarah Conner preparing for the upcoming robot war in her cell any day. I just love the transition she went through between Terminator and Terminator 2. All American girl waitress becomes absolute unit.

You would think they would learn not to go ‘woke’ and blatantly push their agendas, but I guess that is more important to them than making money at the box office these days.

Not the way I would like to see KStew’s career going tbh.

Think they will at the very least include something sapphic in their woke remake?

>>1151

>Did you end up watching any of the Pitch Perfects?

I’m on it. Will report back.

>Please do if you feel like it.

I did do something similar on /b/ back in the day, trying my best so sound serious as I interpreted every last bit of Anon’s dream as him being a repressed gay who secretly wanted his mates.

I will try my best to be at least half-serious here though. It could be you feel like you were drifting away from your friends, or something was coming between you, leading to this dramatic rift in the dream relationship. Perhaps a feeling of not being able to connect or understand each other – growing apart? When they destroy your glasses that could be a fear of being hurt or rejected, and as they reveal how greatly you now differ in opinion, you feel like they are smaller and less worthy of attention.

wew! how is that for Freudian LARPing?

I often have dreams where I having to go somewhere and it takes forever to get there, or get my things. For some reason buildings often have non-Eucledian geometry – so staircases that shouldn’t be possible ascend or exist in reality, or hallways and passages that are really narrow or labyrinthine.

As for keeping a dream journal, the best way is to have something to write with close by the bed. When you wake up, lie still and go over what you can remember of the dream, then write it all down.

>Have you seen Addiction?

Nope. But I will add it to my backlog. I knew there was something familiar about Taylor though; I have Ransom on VHS, and I watched that film a lot back in the day.

>Give me Ripley struggling to carry her equipment while visibly terrified and still kicking ass or Sarah Conner preparing for the upcoming robot war in her cell any day.

Hear, hear! I’m not a fan of the third Alien film, but she is still a realistic character in that. In ‘Resurrection’ Whedon takes over, and she is now a superhero. It’s like he thinks women have to have superpowers in order to be strong characters. Has he ever written something without a superpowered chick with no muscles what so ever kicking the crap out of guys?

>hat is implied by "woke" that we're afraid of it now?

I think the word was first used by blacks who saw it as their version of being redpilled. Of course, both SJWs and others are now also using the word, and while we use it jokingly, they see it as a genuine redpill, and being ‘woke’ to them implies that they see the world for what it is: everything from systemic racism from whitey and police violence and shootings to how the Egypt was really a black civilisation, and everything in between.

TL;DR: it means they will shorehorn in diversity propaganda, and there will be less straight white males, or whites in general.

>Sarah Conner was woke to the coming robot war.

I think the word is mostly used about seeing perceived racial injustice, at least when used by blacks.

Wouldn't be surprised. They have included a lesbian affair in the other movie she's in about Lizzie Borden(sp?) but the movie looks like it will be shit.

>wew! how is that for Freudian LARPing?

Neat! Thanks :)

>I often have dreams where I having to go somewhere and it takes forever to get there, or get my things.

Gosh I know those ones. I call them anxiety dreams. Stuff like suddenly back at school and trying to get to an exam, or trying to catch a train somewhere and it not making sense.

>For some reason buildings often have non-Eucledian geometry – so staircases that shouldn’t be possible ascend or exist in reality, or hallways and passages that are really narrow or labyrinthine.

That sounds really cool (although probably not a pleasant experience in your dreams). I haven't experienced that. My favourites are the action adventure dreams and flying.

>As for keeping a dream journal, the best way is to have something to write with close by the bed.

I'll give it a shot.

Just watched Vampyres from 1974, and I was very pleasantly surprised by this film! Some gorgeous locales and scenes, and with a lot more than meets the eye going on.

The scar on Ted’s arm immediately reminded me of the scars in Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971)! One of the townspeople in particular had his arms bandaged just where Ted’s cut was. Even the lamps in Fran’s room are similar to the male fiori lamp in LSJtD.

The taxidermically preserved jaguar Ted notices reminded me of The Neon Demon, and also Carmilla, who has the ability to turn into a large black cat. Are felines associated with vampiresses, while male bloodsuckers are more associated with wolves?

As far as we know Ted hasn’t had anything but wine and fags (cigarettes) for three or four days! Having sex till you pass out and having two vampiresses suck your blood gotta take a toll on your stamina, right? I very much prefer this approach to vampirism, where it takes a longer time for the victim to die. Not a fan of stories in which they drain the victim immediately.

The scene where Fran forgets it is daytime seemed similar to how Orlok met his fate in Nosferatu – Eine Symphonie des Grauens; Ellen manages to keep Orlok occupied long enough for the sun to rise and kill him.

Marianne Morris is really great as the seductive vampiress in this. What a stunning woman! Sally Faulkner very charming as well. Her boyfriend feels like such a useless character though, and their deaths felt quite rushed.

The film reminds me of Jean Rollin’s films quite a lot – the atmospheric, slow burn, the nudity and the lesbian vampiresses… Fascination and The Living Dead Girl in particular. It even has the somewhat dragged-out gratuitous sex scenes Rollin is so famous for.

There are some scenes that really stood out to me:

* The opening where Fran & Miriam are shot to death by someone unknown; later on the hotel manager is adamant that the has seen Ted before.

* When Harriet is out on her own painting, she turns and looks to see if she is alone – we hear what sounds like a cat, and Fran & Miriam show up not long after. Fran tells her “I always knew we’d find each other. By this sign I’ll recognise you.” She then draws a sign with her thumb across Harriet’s forehead. Something similar happens in The Satanic Rites of Dracula, where the members of the Satanic cult draws an upside down cross with the blood of a sacrificed woman on their foreheads.

* Harriet sees a bloody hand pressed against the window of their caravan at night; when John is murdered by Fran & Miriam his bloody hand is pressed against the windshield.

I took these scenes to mean some kind of deadly premonition or time-loop. It seems to imply rather strongly that Ted is the one who shot Fran & Miriam – “The murderer always returns to the scene of his crime” as the estate agent says.

>I took these scenes to mean some kind of deadly premonition or time-loop. It seems to imply rather strongly that Ted is the one who shot Fran & Miriam

After some thought, trying to figure out what Miriam meant when she talks to Harriet, I came to think that it was Harriet who had killed them in a past life. Her brutal death seems to be retribution by the vampires for their murder x years previous. They have no intent to feed on her.

>later on the hotel manager is adamant that the has seen Ted before.

I don't remember this part. Will need to watch again, but it adds credence to your interpretation.

>Are felines associated with vampiresses, while male bloodsuckers are more associated with wolves?

I've only noticed it associated in Carmilla and thought of it as more of a witch's familiar thing. Though I guess witches and vampiresses can overlap.

>As far as we know Ted hasn’t had anything but wine and fags (cigarettes) for three or four days!

I remember thinking he had quite a bit of stamina for someone who hadn't eaten in days. How is he even able to walk away at the end?!

>They have no intent to feed on [Harriet].

They don’t seem intent on feeding on John (her boyfriend) either. Her death was perhaps especially gruesome though; why take her down to the basement?

>I don't remember this part.

Here is a WebM of that scene. The manager seems to imply that it was several years ago, which adds up to what the estate agent tells the potential American buyers: “It seems that some years ago, the bodies of two young, unidentified women were found.” and that their ghosts haunt the building. There was also talk about ghosts in Let’s Scare Jessica to Death too, right? That Abigail’s ghost haunts the house?

Also, right after the WebM clip, we see Ted applying some eye drops in his hotel room… Sore eyes from a lack of sleep?

I knew I recognised the house/estate! It appeared in Die, Monster, Die! (1965), (a not very faithful, but very enjoyable adaptation of HPL’s The Colour Out of Space), and some Hammer films too?

Good point.

>The manager seems to imply that it was several years ago, which adds up to what the estate agent tells the potential American buyers:

Another good point. Is it possible that he was with Miriam in the past and killed them when he found out she had a lover? Or he's just a travelling serial killer that didn't realise that those were the two women he shot years earlier? What does Miriam mean by I'll always knew we'd find each other and the sign on Harriet's head?

>There is also a recent remake of the film. Have you seen it?

No I'd never heard of it. Holy hannah that pic! Worth adding to the list?

Speaking of lists. The playlist recommendation was a good idea. So we have:

>Disobedience

>Kate's Addiction

>Lovesong

>Vampyres (2016)?

What others and what order should we put them in?

Also thinking of creating a Hammer/horrorish playlist for the Hammer thread. Or too much?

I had a theory that maybe Ted had an affair with Miriam in the past, and when he knew or suspected she had another lover he went ahead and killed them both. That could explain why Miriam hides from view and doesn’t show up. Maybe he didn’t get a good enough view of Fran when he shot them? But… then Miriam shows up later with Fran and their newest victim, Rupert, and Ted doesn’t give any indication he knows or recognises Miriam at all. So that blows a massive hole in that theory.

>What does Miriam mean by I'll always knew we'd find each other and the sign on Harriet's head?

If your theory that Harriet is the killer is true, it could be a way to intimidate her. A Judas kiss would have been better tbh…

Harriet goes to explore the house later on, and even ventures down to the basement in search of answers – there she finds Fran sleeping(?) on a sofa; Miriam is curled up in a corner, wakes up and manages to get away unseen. Harriet also doesn’t see that there are at least two long-dead bodies down there – Fran & Miriam’s past victims I assume.

Just more questions, no real answers.

Also, watches stopping at the house might be to indicate that time stops or doesn’t behave as natural there? – an indicator that time stops or doesn’t behave as natural?

>Worth adding to the list?

I’m up for it! It looks like it has a 3,5 score out of 10 at IMDb though, so brace for impact.

That playlist looks great. In that order?

>Also thinking of creating a Hammer/horrorish playlist for the Hammer thread. Or too much?

Go for it! I think I have five Hammer horror films left, but I am up for revisiting some of the other ones, especially if you haven’t seen them.

>Britpol.webm

I did smile at that scene. Pretty sure that I’m kinda tempted to find a copy of that novelization now – it could answer a lot of our questions; the ID of the killer, the meaning of Fran’s line to Harriet, Fran’s ethnicity, how Ted was able to survive on wine and fags for day on end after being drained of blood each night…

Sorry, it's been so long since I watched it I confused their names.

>Also, watches stopping at the house might be to indicate that time stops or doesn’t behave as natural there? – an indicator that time stops or doesn’t behave as natural?

This would match the idea of Ted being in some kind of time-loop maybe. Or just something to create a more eerie supernatural indicator.

There was also the wine comment. Something about it being from the Carpathian mountains or in that region, indicating a tie to Dracula (or vampire mythology of that area).

Yeah, that final guy we see them pick up and bring back to the house, I think he is credited as Playboy in the end credits, tries to pinpoint the wine district simply by tasting it, only for Fran to reveal it is from the Carpathian Mountains. And in the Universal Dracula film, the Count reveals that he never drink… wine. I think he ate and drank in the novel, right?

Looking at it again it comes off as a bit unintentionally(?) funny; they are having sex on his semiconscious naked body, and he is too out of it to register what is going on. Also, if I am not mistaken this is before he has ‘formally’ met Miranda, so he has no idea who this second chick is, or why they are having sex on top of him.

Another book I need to read again. From memory Dracula prepared Harker's meals and never ate with him. Can't remember if it's mentioned later on whether he eats or drinks (blood notwithstanding) or not.

Partial list of films we have discussed so far:

Et mouirir de plaisir (Blood and Roses) from 1960, an updated version of Le Fanu’s ‘Carmilla’

Compulsion – One of my favourites; very interesting film, beautifully filmed, and I think there is still a lot to discover about it. Think I will go back and give it another watch in the future.

The Neon Demon from 2016 – not as part of the film club, we keep getting back to this, for obvious reasons.

Room in Rome – I know you loathed this, and while I am not a fan, the scene where Alba is hit by the arrow by Amour, is one that really stuck with me. Beautifully filmed, very similar to Hitchcock’s Rear Window

Naked Killer – Uneven comedy action. Some really cool fight scenes, and a few very beautifully filmed scenes – especially when you remember the strict filming schedule they were working under.

Wir sind die Nacht (We are the Night)

Virgin Witch

Thelma – Very intersting film. I feel like we have barley scratched the surface with this.

Alena – Mostly a miss in my book. Loved the locales, but the story fell flat, and almost all the characters are assholes.

Tragedy Girls

Let’s Scare Jessica to Death

Vampyres – On my top five list of best sapphic vampire films. Really loved this one.

I wish I could say it was the latter, but I did cheat and went to the top and scrolled down. I think I could have listed them from memory, maybe not in chronological order though.

Of the films that were part of the film club, my faves are Compulsion & Thelma; the crème de la crème.

Found some interesting interviews with Can Evrenol, director of Housewife, btw. He cites Lucio Fulci & Dario Argento as his main inspirations, and one article described it as a giallo-styled horror

Also, when I had another gander at the first trailer, I caught a glimpse of a woman sucking on a bloody nipple…

BO of the other board here, just finished can Housewife. Massive spoilers ahead.‎

The first parts reminded me of Amer (even the location of the weird ritual the mother participates in is similar, but with Amer being as derivative as it was it's possible that both were inspired by some earlier work. There's also the amulet and the repressed little girl) and Profondo Rosso (childhood trauma, mentalist that picks up the troubled mind in the crowd) a lot, and the follow up of Mandy (from the house with glass that lets you feel like in nature, to the spooky artist significant other, to the cult and even the horn, some things almost look like someone worked on both movies or something. Even the home invasion was similar), but this is its very own thing.

I'll drop a fuller review when I can but as a primer I'd like to mention that ‎one thing I noticed from the start was the fear to have a child. It's there from the moment the mother acts all horrified at the menstrual blood in Hazel's panties. It's also very similar to the plot of the second season of Fargo‎ in a way (woman agrees with her husband about having a kid but is secretly taking contraceptive pills, then a female friend drags her into a cult that somehow changes her fate forever and consequences will never be the same) but again it's very different in many ways. What really surprised me was the role it played in the end. I was expecting a rape scene, not a birth scene. Very well done and I didn't see it coming at any point. Maybe I was too cynical and expecting it to be like a more violent Mandy because of the cult leader/chosen woman theme.‎

I also wonder if she left the event and came back several times if it was one continuous session until she ran away. The whole search of the amulet seems to suggest it wasn't continuous but it's not very clear. Maybe it's supposed to be that was, to make things more oneiric. The revelation (or was it manipulation) that she murdered her sister reminded me of Kitty and Evelyn in La dama rossa uccide sette volte, except it's reversed here.

Originality would seem to be lacking if you look at the isolated elements of the film, but they were combined in a rather refreshing way. If it was a ripoff (I'm not saying it was but leaving the possibility open) then it's a masterfully and creatively done one, like in the golden era of Italian ripoff that many times ended up being better than the stuff they were inspired by.‎

I'll leave one question on the table: was the book really there or was it implanted into her mind, Matrix style?
