State Declares Public Health Emergency After Tuberculosis Outbreak: 1 Dead, 14 Infections Confirmed – 170 Likely Exposed

A public health emergency has been declared in Long Beach, California, due to a tuberculosis outbreak.
A declaration from Dr. Anissa Davis, Long Beach’s health officer, said one person has died and nine people have been hospitalized, according to Live Science.
Fourteen people with active TB had been identified as of April 29. All cases have been linked to a single-room-occupancy hotel. Officials are not naming the hotel in what they said was an effort to protect patients’ privacy.
“People who were staying at the hotel at the time or could have otherwise been exposed have been or will be contacted by the Health Department,” a Health Department statement said.
“Through the course of this investigation, staff have identified approximately 170 people who have likely been exposed to TB,” the statement said.
The emergency declaration, which was issued Thursday, is expected to be ratified by the Long Beach City Council on Tuesday, according to Newsweek.

Cash is very efficient for small transactions. Cash transactions are immediate, flexible and anonymous. Cash does not need a password and can’t be hacked. The usefulness of cash is not dependent on technology that might break down – and sometimes does, creating huge problems.
A benefit of eliminating cash and moving to a digital economy, they claim, is combating crime. However, cash isn’t all that convenient for illicit transactions. It has the disadvantage for criminals of being small-scale. For large amounts of illicit transactions, you need to go digital.
The ideal medium for illicit drug commerce in 2014, for example, was – believe it or not – Amazon gift tokens. More recently, money launderers have used online gambling sites to disguise their shady funds. Cash on the other hand has allowed crimes to be discovered. Not least of all because, unlike digital, cash requires a face-to-face transaction. In 2021, a criminal ring attempting to launder money in Canada was caught when they tried to deposit large amounts of cash with a bank.

Despite the tent encampment obviously breaking several laws, campus police have permitted the occupation to remain in tact. The reasons as to why this has been allowed to go on for so long are unknown.
The occupiers are strictly enforcing border measures of their territory and have set in place strict messaging control, only allowing media liaisons to speak to the press. When True North was finally let into the encampment, we were under the close supervision of a “media escort” who followed us everywhere we went and told us not to film any faces.
That was easy because everyone inside the encampment was masked as if it was 2021.

The spy agency first consulted with the federal Public Safety Department and Muslim and Jewish leaders last fall about the rise in reported hate crimes which have been fueled by the conflict.
“While the long-term impacts of the current crisis cannot be easily predicted, it is clear that this conflict has raised tensions within our society,” wrote CSIS spokesman Eric Balsam, according to the Canadian Press.

Sinopec, a major player in China’s energy landscape and one of the largest exporters in Asia, is reportedly in talks with Pembina Pipeline Corp regarding a potential deal that could see it gain equity in the Cedar LNG project.
Sinopec was incorporated by the Chinese government in 1998 and is a state-owned enterprise.
The motivations behind Sinopec’s interest appear to be multifaceted. On one hand, the company is facing internal pressures from Beijing to optimize its assets and enhance profitability. The first Black female to serve as superintendent with the Toronto Police Service has pleaded guilty to seven counts of professional misconduct for her role in providing six Black constables with answers to cheat on their promotions exam.
Supt. Stacy Clarke believed her efforts were justified because of the slow pace she saw in promoting Black candidates for promotions within the Toronto Police Service, her lawyer Joseph Markson argued during the tribunal hearing.
“As the first Black female superintendent in the history of the Toronto Police Service, Supt. Clarke has been running uphill and against the wind for more than 26 years,” said Markson.
“In these unique and extraordinary circumstances, there is a straight line in connecting systemic discrimination in policing towards Blacks, Supt. Clarke’s lived experience, and the facts of misconduct to which she had pled guilty. She is extremely remorseful for her misconduct. However those acts of misconduct were rooted in real despair, real hurt and real pain.”
Clarke pleaded guilty to all seven counts last fall after she was caught providing pictures with the answers to questions for officers in the promotional process, which included three counts of breach of confidence, three counts of discreditable conduct, and one count of insubordination.
All of the incidents occurred in 2021; she was promoted to superintendent the year before.
While her misconduct could merit a dismissal, TPS isn’t pushing for that. Continue…

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is once again defending controversial legislation which would give the province sweeping powers over municipalities, this time, by saying it could be used to stop non-citizens from voting in Calgary.
The Alberta government introduced Bill 20, the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, which would give cabinet power to fire city councillors and overturn bylaws. The proposed legislation comes as Calgary City Council passed a motion to allow non-citizens to vote in municipal elections last week.
Smith said that in “rare circumstances” the province needs to take a second look at city decisions that are unconstitutional or fall outside a municipality’s responsibility.
“That is simply not appropriate nor within their authority,” Smith said of Calgary’s motion to allow non-citizens to vote.
“Bill 20 will provide the province with a tool to deal with these rare but serious examples of municipal overreach.” Continue…
