Russia’s key ally moves to extend death penalty

Belarusian MPs have approved the punishment forofficials found guilty of treason

Belarusian officials who commit high treason may soon face the death penalty, according to new legislation approved by the nation’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday.

In a statement, the press service of the Belarusian House of Representatives said the bill would allow “the possibility of applying an exceptional measure of punishment in the form of the death penalty” to public officials and those with the status of military personnel if they commit treason against the state.

The legislation seeks “to exert a deterrent effect on destructive elements, as well as demonstrating a resolute [intention] to combat” this type of crime. It will not enter into force until it is approved by the Council of the Republic, the parliament’s upper chamber, and signed by President Alexander Lukashenko.

The bill aims to increase the time of detention for those suspected of espionage, treason, and a number of other anti-state crimes from 72 hours to up to ten days. The press service explained that the current amount of time is often not enough to carry out the required investigative measures.

Belarusremains the only country in Europe that still has the death penalty. The punishment, which is carried out by shooting, is reserved for those who commit particularly grave crimes. No crime, however, requires execution, which has become increasingly rare in the past decade.

Today, the @EPA ordered the train company, Norfolk Southern, to pay for the clean-up and disposal of hazardous materials.

This is common sense. This is their mess. They should clean it up.

Our team is working in lockstep with state and local officials and were on the ground hours after the train derailed.

- We've screened 500+ homes

- @CDCgov has deployed chemical assessment personnel

- We've deployed @FEMA resources has made clear to rail companies that their pattern of resisting safety regulations has got to change.

Congress should join us in implementing rail safety measures.

But the @USDOT is limited in the rail safety measures they can implement. Why?

For years, elected officials – including the last admin – have limited our ability to implement and strengthen rail safety measures.

Heck, many of the elected officials pointing fingers right now want to dismantle the EPA – the agency that is making sure this clean up happens.

Rail companies have spent millions of dollars to oppose common-sense safety regulations. And it’s worked. This is more than a train derailment or a toxic waste spill – it’s years of opposition to safety measures coming home to roost.

We'll continue to hold rail companies accountable when they fail to put safety first. But first, we’ve got Norfolk Southern’s mess to clean.

For two full weeks an unsecured Department of Defense (DOD) server was leaking military emails online and no one noticed until Monday. The culprit was a so-called misconfiguration that left the server without a password. One person was killed and multiple others were injured in a fiery explosion at a manufacturing plant in Ohio, according to a local official.

Steven Mullins, a 46-year-old man from North Ridgeville, Ohio, was found dead at the scene, said Christopher Harris, external affairs manager of the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Monday afternoon explosion took place at I. Schumann & Co., which manufactures brass and bronze alloy, in Oakwood, Ohio, according to Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control.

There were "multiple burn victims" from inside the plant taken to the hospital, Bedford Heights Police Department Sgt. Robert Majer told ABC News.

WEWS initially reported that 14 people were injured, including one critically.

AL-MUKALLA: The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have admitted trading Al-Qaeda prisoners for their own captured fighters. It was a rare admission by the group, which has long denied freeing militants.

It came a day after Rashad Al-Alimi, the chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, accused the Houthis of releasing Al-Qaeda militants, arming them and sending them to attack Yemeni government troops.

Abdulkader Al-Murtada, head of the Houthis’ prisoner exchange committee, said on Sunday that they traded two Al-Qaeda terrorists, purportedly captured on the battlefields of Al-Bayda province, for three of the militia’s fighters.

The previous day, Al-Qaeda said it had exchanged two Houthis for two of its militants, identified by their jihadist names Al-Qaqa Al-Bayhani and Muwahid Al-Baydani, according to SITE Intelligence Group, an American organization that monitors Al-Qaeda statements.

Observers of the conflict in Yemen believe that the Houthis, who usually keep their prisoner exchanges with Al-Qaeda secret, were compelled to acknowledge this one after a third party revealed the details.

Ali Al-Fakih, the editor of Al-Masdar Online, told Arab News that the Houthis attempted to legitimize the exchange by claiming that Al-Qaeda is a belligerent party supporting the Yemeni government.

“This is one of the most secret Houthi files,” said Al-Fakih.

Similar deals have happened previously, he added, but it seems a middleman disclosed information about this latest one. The Houthis therefore reluctantly confirmed the prisoner swap but attempted to make it seem like it was with with a recognized entity that supports “aggression,” he said.

President Al-Alimi, speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, said the Houthis have not only released Al-Qaeda and Daesh prisoners held by Yemeni security agencies on terrorism charges but have armed them and sent them to attack military and security targets in government-controlled areas. He added that the Yemeni government has informed security forces in neighboring countries, and the wider international community, about the Houthi collusion with Al-Qaeda.

“There is known collaboration between Houthi terrorists, Al-Qaeda and Daesh,” Al-Alimi said. “They freed all Daesh and Al-Qaeda inmates and convicts, provided them with weapons and equipment, and sent them to regions controlled by the legitimate government to carry out terrorist operations.”

The Houthi acknowledgment of the prisoner exchange came days after Al-Qaeda in Yemen confirmed the deaths of Hussein Hadboul, also known as Hassan Al-Hadrami, and his brother Muhed in a US drone attack in Yemen’s central Marib province.

The group seemed to be referring to a US drone attack on a vehicle on Jan. 30 that killed three Al-Qaeda terrorists.

Yemeni security officials and terrorist experts identified Hadboul as an Al-Qaeda bomb-maker, responsible for the manufacture of improvised explosive devices that had killed a number of Yemeni security and military personnel.

Food researcher calls for 'queer pedagogy' as part of sustainable development education

“Queer pedagogy, as a form of critical pedagogy, rejects the influence of heteronormative and patriarchal systems and consequently also rejects anthropocentrism,” says Higgins.

In order to effectively educate for sustainable development, it is important to educate in a “queer-informed” way, according to one queer pedagogue who believes that unsustainable development i.e., development that is economically, socially, and environmentally damaging, can be said to be “heteronormative and patriarchal.”

Sustainable development is economic development that focuses on not depleting natural resources. In energy, things like wind and solar power are considered sustainable in outcome, though they are substantially less sustainable in the production of the tools needed to generate, store and transmit that energy.

In a 2021 paper titled "Queer pedagogy for, with and within education for sustainable development," Dr. Keiran Higgins of the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast, states that “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a growing movement that seeks to empower learners to face the existential threats of the Anthropocene.”

The anthropocene is defined as being the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.

“Queer pedagogy, as a form of critical pedagogy, rejects the influence of heteronormative and patriarchal systems and consequently also rejects anthropocentrism,” says Higgins.

Heteronormative is defined as “the positioning of cisgender heterosexuality as the societal default or even ideal.”

Higgins explains that the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, designed to guide humanity towards a more measured and equitable environment, society, and economy. The role of education in meeting these goals was recognized by the creation of Education for Sustainable Development, which Higgins argues must be “queered.”

This is because education is apparently “not neutral,” but instead can “ignore, or even detract from sustainable development.” Higgins says his paper “is focused on higher education but many of the contributions can be adapted for use in primary, secondary and further education.”

“It is important to foster queer desires in the classroom,” advises Higgins. “While queer pedagogy does have an element of the (homo)erotic to it, this is not specifically about students’ choice of romantic or sexual partner. Instead, it is about celebrating the diversity of wants and needs among students, particularly when it comes to how they might use the education that pedagogues imbue them with.”

Educators are also told that self-disclosure is an “important tool for fostering queer desires,” and Higgins rejects the traditional teacher training that told teachers to leave their private lives out of the classroom.

A “queer pedagogue rejects this notion, speaking openly about who they are, experiences that they have had and the reasons why they do what they do,” says Higgins. “They use their stories to build rapport with students, inform students about the range of options open to them and follow this up with a referral pathway of opportunities to engage in events, training programmes, clubs, societies and more taking place both inside and outside institutions.”

“If our students are ever to fathom creative and innovative solutions to the existential crisis facing humanity, it is therefore important that they not feel ashamed of the parts of themselves that could bring forth these solutions,” Higgins explains.

“Once students have awareness of their desires, they can begin to think about how to turn these into actions that advance sustainable development,” the advice continues, before going on to explain that testing, grading, and assessment is “straight, literally and figuratively.” Here, the “philosophy of upgrading” is offered as insightful.

“When examining queer pedagogy or indeed, any subject, through a queer lens, one is often left with more questions than answers,” says Higgins in the conclusion, a statement surely no reader would argue with.

The Attorney-General's Department revealed the Australian Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China's (ACPPRC) listing as a foreign-government-related entity during a committee hearing as part of a review of the scheme on Tuesday.

The ACPPRC was issued with a final transparency notice on February 6 after failing to comply with the requirements of the scheme's transparency register, known as FITS.

Appearing before the federal parliament's Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS), Simon Newnham, a senior official with the Attorney-General's Department, defended the length of time it took to register the group.

"The notice provides literal transparency that that body is related to a foreign principal. It also provides clarification for persons who may be undertaking activities on behalf of the ACPPRC that those activities may be registrable under the scheme," deputy secretary Newnham said.

"We are working as fast as we can, prioritising the situations where there is a concern about lack of transparency coupled with the highest risk activities.

"Here I would particularly point to where that activity is geared to or focused on a particular decision or a political process or goes to systemic and sustained failure to comply with obligations."

Shadow Minister for Countering Foreign Interference Senator James Paterson has called for a radical shift in the scheme's enforcement, labelling the listing as a case of "closing the gate behind the horse".

"The ACPPRC is a notorious United Front Work Department body of the Chinese Communist Party and has been since before the foreign influence transparency scheme was introduced," Senator Paterson said.

"After almost five years of operation, the fact that the Attorney-General's Department has only this year exercised its powers against them is frankly remarkable," he said.

"Because of its notoriety, the group has since reduced its overt activities and has been supplanted by other UFWD bodies.

"Hopefully, it doesn't take another five years before they are pursued by the department.

"Clearly, there are changes necessary to improve the operation of the law — but the approach the attorney-general takes to enforcement also needs a radical shift."

Scheme's architect questions enforcement

The FITS regime was introduced by then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull in December 2017.

Shares in Japan Post Bank slid more than 6% on Wednesday, a day after Reuters reported that parent Japan Post Holdings was considering selling around a third of its stake in the bank, which could be worth nearly $9 billion. A move to sell the stake would mark the first such sale since Japan Post and its two financial businesses – Japan Post Bank and Japan Post Insurance – were listed in 2015 in the country’s biggest privatization in about three decades. Japan’s national postal service currently owns around 89% of the bank and is aiming to reduce the stake to around 60% by the end of March, while the bank is considering buying back some of the shares, sources told Reuters. As part of its privatization, Japan Post Holdings was set to reduce its stake in both the bank and insurance divisions to 50% or less by the end of March 2026. It reached that target for the insurance unit in 2021. George Soros famously admitted to helping the Nazis in World War II steal from Jews and take their booty. He said in a 60 minutes interview 20 years ago from Ukraine of all places, that if he didn’t do it then someone else would – shrugging it off.

After this relationship with the Nazis, Soros was somehow given US citizenship and has been a huge funder of the Democrat Party.

Soros is connected with a number of non-profits (which are supposed to be non-biased per US tax law). These non-profits are ruthless attack dogs.

Soros-related groups were behind many of the riots during the Trump Administration. He’s backed DAs in cities who refuse to indict criminals, and corrupt secretaries of states in swing states.

Gaining a Soros recommendation is not a good thing for DeSantis.

In a wide-ranging speech, Soros ripped Trump’s presidency and complemented elements of DeSantis’s style.

“DeSantis is shrewd, ruthless, and ambitious,” said Soros, adding, “He is likely to be the Republican candidate.”

Trump, on the other hand, “has turned into a pitiful figure continually bemoaning his loss in 2020. Big Republican donors are abandoning him in droves,” he said.

Soros, an international financier and philanthropist, typically dumps millions of dollars into political races and committees. He heads a global liberal network of groups pushing climate change, financial reform, and changes to the criminal system.

He recently teamed with Charles Koch and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund to revive the Iran nuclear deal, according to reports.

‘Tip Of The Iceberg’: Biden Appointee’s Ties To Alleged Chinese Intel Groups Put Him In Legal Hot Water, Experts Say

President Joe Biden’s appointee representing U.S. business interests in Asia should be investigated for his ties to an alleged Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence front group, multiple legal experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Dominic Ng, CEO of East West Bank, may be required to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), and he may have also violated The Espionage Act (TEA), legal experts told the DCNF after reviewing relevant statutes. Ng served in leadership positions within two organizations identified by China experts as CCP intelligence front groups, the DCNF revealed in a recent investigation.

“It may be prudent for the Biden administration to suspend or put on hold this appointment of Mr. Ng,” Morse Tan, dean of Liberty University’s School of Law, told the DCNF. “An investigation should be engaged in to determine what is going on here because there could be U.S. interests that are at stake that could be damaged, and also advantage given to the Chinese Communist Party, who is well known to be engaged in espionage, intelligence gathering and other such things within the United States.”

East West Bank admitted Friday that Ng had served at an “executive-director level” in an “honorary position” at the China Overseas Exchange Association (COEA). Yet, Ng allegedly withdrew from the organization in 2014 due to “non-participation,” according to an East West Bank spokesman’s statements reported by American Banker on Friday.

The statements were made following a DCNF investigation which found that Ng served as “executive director” at COEA between 2013 and 2017, before the banker began a five-year position with the same title of “executive director” at the related China Overseas Friendship Association (COFA) in 2019.

Chinese intelligence experts, such as former CIA officer Nicholas Eftimiades, have identified both COEA and COFA as front groups for the United Front Work Department (UFWD), a CCP agency overseeing both influence and intelligence operations, according to multiple reports from the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC).

“He should be immediately removed from APEC — at least until a proper FBI investigation clears Ng of any such involvement,” Eric Early, managing partner at the law firm of Early, Sullivan, Wright, Gizer & McRae, told the DCNF.

In response to the DCNF’s investigation, six Republican members of Congress led by Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Feb. 15, demanding for Ng to be investigated to determine the “extent of Mr. Ng’s knowledge of sensitive information.”

In addition to a suspension from APEC, Ng should also be compelled to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), Tan told the DCNF.

“[FARA] is for U.S. individuals that are agents of a foreign principal — the foreign principal here being the Chinese Communist Party,” said Tan. “[Ng] was involved as the executive director for a couple of front organizations, which both merged into one, and had extensive interactions with the CCP — sometimes high-ranking CCP individuals.”

“In terms of whether or not [Ng] was an ‘agent’ there seems to be a broad understanding of what ‘agent’ means under [FARA] and includes all individuals acting in a political or quasi-political capacity,” Tan told the DCNF.

Based on the available evidence, Michael Chamberlain, director of Protect the Public’s Trust, told the DCNF that it “appears that Mr. Ng may well qualify as an ‘agent of a foreign principal,’ which would require him to register and disclose his relationship under FARA.”

Likewise, Reed D. Rubinstein, Senior Counselor and Director of Oversight and Investigations at America First Legal, told the DCNF that “by virtue of his admitted service” in COEA, Ng “may well have had an obligation to register under FARA.”

“Obviously, there are facts we don’t know about what his role really may have been, and the allegations about the organization and its connections to the CCP,” said Rubinstein. “If those allegations are in fact, true, then, at a minimum, yes, there should have been a [FARA] registration.”
