Are there any tragic, traumatic, or otherwise depressing things that have happened to your wife/husband, or any struggles that they experience that really bring the feels for you?

My poor Flayn's life has been filled with various tragedies. After her race was brought to near extinction, she'd found herself fighting in an ancient war where she was grievously wounded near the point of death. After which she remained in a comatose state for nearly a millennium, only to awaken to a world completely foreign to her, and one without her cherished mother. If not for the care of her father Seteth, she would have died for certain.

And even after she wakes up it takes a while before she can begin to experience anything resembling contentment again, as she's forced to live in total isolation for longer than anyone should. It's only until after her father Seteth had established himself at the Garreg Mach Monastery (and created a cover story for her to come out of hiding) that she could finally get the social interaction she was so desperately starved for.

Some time after that, however, she gets kidnapped and held captive by a group of dark wizards who take blood from her to do wicked experiments. Thankfully it didn't go on for long before I (as the protag) rescued her from their clutches. That peace doesn't last for long sadly, as just a few months later a continent-wide war breaks out, and gentle Flayn is thrust into battle once again.

However, all of that is nothing compared to what you are potentially made to do to Flayn if you side against her faction. Some years later a battle with her and Seteth approaches, and they both will express dismay over having to fight you after the good you'd done for them, but fight them you must. There are two outcomes that fight can have: if you the protag fight Flayn or Seteth personally, they will submit to your will and retreat after battle, going into hiding.

But if you don't get the chance, they stay in the fight, to the death. Flayn will express how sad it makes her, but that she must uphold her duty. And then you, with your army that you've been crafting throughout this whole war campaign, kill her. Just as she dies, she apologizes to her father for dying before him, and breathlessly declares that she will be returning to her mother. I still can't think about it without getting incredibly distraught, but thankfully I never experienced this scenario personally.

Anyway, I'd like to know if there are any heavy experiences your wife/husband had or has that affect you in the same way. Sorry this post was so long-winded; there's just a lot of sorrow beneath Flayn's joy that many don't realize, but I think that makes her all the more precious and beautiful!

(Also it's implied that if she doesn't get married after the war's end she goes to sleep for another millennium which I think is also sad but couldn't really fit anywhere else. That's all the more motivation for me to always be by her side <3)

Flandre’s main tragedy (as far as available canon information goes), is how she spends her life secluded. She is said to rarely leave her bedroom, and even more rarely leaves the mansion in which she lives. She is basically Touhou’s hikikomori…

For many years, it was debated among fans if she was forced to remain inside by her sister or if she was doing so on her own. Recent canon info revealed that she is doing it on her own will (or at least mostly on her own will).

In a realistic psychological perspective, one cannot live a life of such isolation out of a pure unrestricted choice. There must therefore be something wrong with her that prevents her from seeking a more social and active life (Flandre explaining away that her bedroom is ‘’comfortable’’ seems defensive in that regard). Still, that is a realistic perspective and I would bet a hundred bucks that ZUN did not think about it that deeply and just went with something like ‘’yeah, she just likes to remain alone’’. And who knows, maybe the psychology of vampire is different than the one of humans…

Oh, and on a completely different note: Another tragedy is that she remains an unplayable character despite the fact that she’s been in Touhou Popularity Poll’s top 10 for years… :(

Damn, I feel sorry Flayn had to go through all this…

> I still can't think about it without getting incredibly distraught, but thankfully I never experienced this scenario personally.

I would feel very conflicted about playing that story path if I were you. On one side, I would want to see everything related to my waifu in canon material, even the sad stuff. But on the other hand, how could I enjoy playing the character who kills her?

In Touhou, you get to fight against Flandre, but it’s just in danmaku battles, which are mostly just a game/sport (even though it can play rough sometimes).

Oh I was absolutely conflicted! In the path in question you actually have to fight her twice, and it isn't until the second fight that she can die but even that first fight was very hard for me. What made it worse is the game gives you no prior warning at all that Flayn will leave you and you will fight her immediately after the choice is made, and if I'd known I definitely wouldn't have done it as my first playthrough, or possibly even at all. It's unquestionably the most difficult route to stomach for many reasons, the worst of which being what happens with Flayn.

As you mentioned though, I do feel compelled to know everything about her so after finding out about her death I did go back to see for myself, and it was as horrible as I was told it would be. Like I said though this was done outside of my actual playthroughs so as far as I and the game's ending are concerned Flayn never died once.

Here is a vid that shows the moment where she dies. I have it saved but I can't bring myself to watch it. :(

RWBY spoilers, so I'll go ahead and post it.

In Volume 3,Nearing the end, Yang gets disqualified in the Vytal festival tournament for assault after the finals, but it was due falling into Emerald's illusion that made Yang think Mercury is still trying to attack her. Near the end of that volume, Yang tried protecting Blake from a Grimm invasion only losing her arm from an unfortunate encounter with Adam.

That volume impacted me during the early relationship with her seeing her struggle to guarantee the safety of her friends. By volume 4, She underwent bad memories of the incident, while the only parental figure Taiyang help her get out of depression.

In all honesty it usually hurts me seeing Yang like this, especially when I try rewatching the series.

Well Mordred's existence while she was alive was pretty much one of pure manipulation and tragedy, she spent her entire life just being used as a puppet and tool by Morgan.

She was created by Morgan for the sole purpose of killing Arturia and as a result her 'upbringing' was just brainwashing and manipulation to try and get her to despise Arturia and infiltrate Camelot, with Morgan convincing Mordred that she was the rightful king of Britain and that Arturia had taken it from her.

When Mordred did eventually infiltrate Camelot, she instead became infatuated with Arturia, adoring and admiring her as the perfect king, giving up her goals of overthrowing her.

To break Mordred's admiration, Morgan manipulated her by purposely revealing that she was Arturia's child, knowing that Mordred would go to Arturia with this information and get rejected.

After being rejected as Morgan predicted Mordred began to despise Arturia and rebelled against her, which lead to them both killing one another at Camlann.

Also, due to Mordred being created artificially as a homunculus, her growth rate was increased, meaning her life was only around 8 years long. Being a homunculus also caused Mordred to hate normal humans somewhat, being jealous of their natural existence and lifespans.

Mordred only really wanted to be accepted and recognised by Arturia, to prove herself worthy, but instead was manipulated into rebelling against her own father and dying in the process. Even centuries later her one wish is to prove herself to Arturia, a wish she tried to fulfill during the holy grail war, but was unable to due to her Master's death.

Most of her life was a tragedy in some way or another. From being born a bastard of rape to being betrayed by the very people she spent her life protecting in the end. She was forced into a cruel life she didn't deserve and flourished despite her fate, selflessly devoting herself to creating the better life for people that she could never have herself. There were bright spots, such as growing up with and squiring for her brother, learning chivalry and duty from Sir Ector, learning to ride a horse, and many of the campaigns with her knights where she really thrived, but they were overshadowed by the eventual unraveling of her rule and the devastation it brought about to her, her friends and family, and her subjects. She blames herself entirely for her failure, and it would be hard not to in her position - she did the best with what she was given and lead the only way she knew how, prioritizing others always ahead of herself. Which while noble, was the eventual reason she was betrayed. Her reason for living was so outside anything they could understand that those around her just couldn't accept that someone like that could exist and rejected her.

But I don't think she really had a choice. The hard decisions she had to make - provisioning supplies from a village during war leaving them with nothing, sacrificing innocents to save the greater good, would take too much of a toll on someone as inherently kindhearted as her who hadn't decided to seal off their ego like she had. And the truly cruel part is that throughout so much sacrifice the one selfish dream she allowed herself was "I wish I could redo my life so someone better could take my place".

The choice to draw Caliburn and become King was hers and hers alone and I don't think she ever regretted that moment. She knew her birthright and Merlin warned her what it would entail. Instead, she regretted her life itself - which is in some way the ultimate tragedy a person can endure.

Kisaragi wouldn't really relate to the experiences of everyone else who answered before since she lives in a relatively nice and ordinary modern day setting.

However, this doesn't mean her life has been perfect either.

She has frequently struggled with her own self-confidence as well as her own inferiority complex; and prefers staying out of the spotlight.

Yeah, forgot to mention in my post, one of the driving factors for Mordred wanting the crown was seeing the effects kingship was having on her father. Deep down Mordred only really wished to save Arturia from the suffering of kingship and to take the burden onto herself, but that desire got corrupted into hatred my Morgan's schemes.

I can accept that she had her own circumstances, yeah. The only two I can unreservedly blame are Morgan and Lancelot but even then someone like them coming along and taking advantage of Arturia's situation was just an eventuality.

I've never watched Fate/Zero so I'm not really familiar with Lancelot and what he did other than NTRing Arturia and killing Mordred's siblings, was there something else Lancelot did to Arturia to cause her downfall, or were you referring to the whole affair thing?
