Beksinski is kind of a meme artist but it's not hard to see why he's popular. His dark surrealist style really is great. That cathedral kind of looks like something Giger would do.

It's not just the dark surrealist style but also the fact that he is a technically competent painter. There's plenty of dark surrealism out there but most of it is pretty amateur in terms of lighting/shading, composition, and detail, but Zdzislaw is on par with many classical painters in those categories (not the best) on top of being very creative with his paintings.

from what little I can guess and read about Beksinski, is that he just wanted to paint dreamscape stuff for the hell of it before he went off to his more abstract and digital stuff. Nothing particularly jumped out as to say that he had been 'insane', but imaginative and reclusive toward public events.
