A list of red flags is, ironically, a damn big red flag. (Not here; this a forum, not a profile.)

Any complaining, any petty bullshit; all red flags.

Premature defensiveness is another big one. This is when you see someone claim to have or not have some character or behavioral trait when that sort of character trait is the fucking default in the first place, like I don’t like drama, or I’m not a pretentious person. This is a gigantic, flashing neon sign that the opposite of what is claimed is true, and I’ve found very few exceptions.

Narcissism is the worst, and the biggest thing I watch out for; a lot of the best potential players are among the absolute worst actual players—anybody who’s listing their views or bookmarks (even and especially obliquely, like oh, I have so many bookmarks, I sometimes get lost in the messages …), anybody who mentions how damn good they are, etc. But, just as much as that, anyone who seems like they have really hot ideas. I guess I deal with this enough I get a sort of eye for it, but it’s very important; you have to discern between people who want your play and people who want your attention. Generally being ready to drop absolutely anyone at the drop of a hat for any reason puts you in a much better position to avoid this shit.

Pretentiousness in general is the worst, but it’s hard to avoid on profiles because you’ve got all the vagueness of a public performance with none of the benefit of an audience to tell you whether you’re getting it right, so I try to leave a little leeway on this one.

I mean it. I really try.

Grammar competence, weirdly, means basically nothing to me (unless it’s less than fluent; honesty, while admirable, doesn’t make up for incompetence). Lots of morons list themselves as advanced or very advanced; lots of competent writers just say "fluent."

I admit, though, I’ve only seen a few people describe themselves as "doctoral," and of them, all but one lived up to the claim. The trouble is, they take pretentiousness to a remarkable new level; we’re talking about a guy who uses the archaic present perfect tense in a totally non-ironic way (the old style used in, most famously, "now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds"). I mean, as someone who understands the shit, it’s kind of cool the way these nuts can twist words into elaborate shapes, but you kinda have to throw up in your mouth at it, too.

Anything on their no list that'd give a "Yeah well I didn't want to play with you anyway!" vibe: "People who don't respond" or "People who block without reason" etc.

I'm weary around high viewcounts, how could you not have gotten generally bored or otherwise developed some unsavoury traits in that time? Especially if they have a high Views:Time existed ratio.

Not really a red flag but more of a pet peeve, having the custom kinks: "Fave: I really like these" "Yes: I also like these" "Maybe: Ask me if you want to do them I might be interested" and "No: I do not like these things at all." It's just no unnecessary, you've just given a definition of those four words you fool.

Almost every time they have 'no preference' set for post length, it means 1-2 sentences, if that.

Even the profiles with endless walls of text. It's like they got all their writing done up front and expect you to match that instead of what they give you.

Pretty much any time they feel the need to make some OOC cunty comment on their profile about shitters PMing them. How dumb do you have to be to think that this will stop any of the utmost shitters from hitting you up? The people who would actually read the profile are going to be turned off by it, too.

Hell I could be a perfect match with someone and go find someone else rather than even risk it if a profile comes off as bitchy. Funny thing is the GOOD roleplayers have options when it comes to partners and won't just take any old thing so the majority will just skip your fucking profile over.

However, you're wrong on the last bit. By commissioning they do have most of the rights to the art. They have all the rights for private use. The only rights that have to usually be negotiated separately are if you are going to use it commercially. If not then they are fucking doing it wrong.

Plus like, I'd be very surprised if anybody ever asked an art owner if they could use it first. It's certainly easier to ask forgiveness than permission, yeah, but I can see how that might piss them off.
