I like playing out this idea in my head of starting a cyberpunk bar. I got no brouzouf to do it with, but I like to dream.

What would a modern day cyberpunk-bar look like? What kind of name would it have? What drinks would it serve?

I figured it would probably have the local cheaper beer on tap, as well as something like Asahi (or a themed house beer), with cyberpunk themed cocktails and cheaper food to eat (everything from instant noodles to bar pizza).

As for the name, ideas like the "Capsule Bar" or "Neo-Tokyo" are the first things that come to mind.

Just throw cyber parties in a garage or in an abandoned warehouse and serve "cyber" alcohol for money. Make sure you serve the drinks with quadcopters or some kind of tall roomba that follows like on the floor to find the tables.

Closest I've seen to a cyberpunk bar is Little Trouble in Atlanta. Lots of neon, overpriced hipster takes on Asian street food, and a heavy industrial vibe. Take that, add more cyber and you might be on to something.

>I like to dream

Love you already, chummer.

>looks

Honestly, if you try to open a bar with little to no budget and actually manage to, it's pretty much going to look cyber automatically.

Can't paint the wall, have to rely on refurbished patchwork furniture, improvise the counter, you're there. Chuck in some cheap LED strips for light and cyberadio for music.

>drinks

Get two beers on tap. One should be cheapest shit you can find, one should be decent. That way, you can serve a broader selection of customers.

In general, always consider offering a cheaper option for any given type of drink.

Also choose some sort of specialization, serve more drins of one kind. Exotic beers, whiskey, whatevs.

If you offer cocktails, make sure to create unique recipes and present cocktails in a cool way. In general, serve your drinks and food in an unusual way. Full-metal cups have several advantages.

Serve coffee and stay open until morning to give wageslaves the caff they need.

>food

Nachos and pizza(-baguettes). Everything you can just throw in an oven with a timer is good.

>misc

Dress the part, be sure to honor the law yourself, but offer your clients discretion and maybe some privacy (booths?). Shady folk, business and brouzouf will come to you with little risk.

That sounds like any bar in any rural area, except instead of 'signal jammers' and 'local wifi only', you just have no signal.

Seriously, though, just dropping a pirate box in a bar and calling it Cyberpunk might not cut it.

Everyone wants to go to 'Cyberia' from Hackers, but that was just an in-ground pool with stuff thrown in it for a shoot. Places like that don't exist, and if they did, they wouldn't be 'real' in an organic sense, they'd be a theme bar, like DisneyLand's idea of hacking.

Better to find a Makerspace with a fridge, but all the makerspaces I come across are filled with tech bros telling me about how they're the next Steve Jobbs or whatever.

Lots of subdued neon. No shitty refurbished furniture, just an industrial motif. Retro arcade games. Carefully selected jukebox. Video screens playing bad CGI.

Keep the balance between bar, conversation nooks and dancefloor.

And plenty of thugs to keep bikers from selling meth out of your premises.

Yes, a tryhard hipster rave bar is exactly what OP meant.

Also, only serve organic, GMO-free vegan food and expensive craft beer together with nice lady cocktails.

In all seriousness though, refurbished furniture is good for starting out on a low budget, as you should invest that brouzouf in the bar equipment. Furniture is easy to replace, integrated bar stuff and heavy fridges ain't.

I think this conversation has run aground on the issue practically all 'Cyberpunk' related conversations do.

One person is suggesting a 'Cyberpunk-genre-themed' bar, where the tropes of the fiction are played out in a setting people might go to take part in that fiction.

The other is suggesting a place where real hackers would go to drink cheap beer and hack things.

Cyberpunk needs to decide if it's fiction or reality, if it's cosplay or activism. It can't be both.

I had a similar dream of making a "cyber-punkhouse" which would combine a bar, a capsule hotel, an internet cafe and a hackerspace. It may also host musical performances or infosec workshops.

Ideally it would be a network of such places around the world with a "membership" option which would give access to a bed and other stuff worldwide. If I'll become an uber-richfag at some point, I might make it real just because why not.

That sounds pretty respectable, the idea of a monthly subscription to worldwide hotels could be good, but hard to organise (vacancies and such).

>>50888

I think its possible to have an activist element whilst maintaining a legal, profitable business. While this would be a cyberpunk-themed bar, it could also include hackerspaces, or even something along the lines of tech supplies/services on the side, as well as the ideas from >>50819

>>50881

The hard part would be striking a music and mood balance. People should be talkative, but not so talkative that you can't hear anything. Theres a nice bar in Sydney (called the Lobo Plantation) but its far too loud to relax with friends.

>>50811

Oven pizzas are easy to organise, cheap and taste good. The better brands of instant ramen on the menu could also fill the bellies of drunk chummers. Booths could be good but you don't want couples doing particularly dirty shit.

Thanks for the ideas so far, even though I'm a wageslave with little brouzouf to my name, I'll keep dreaming about things until I decide to rob a bank or get lucky with crypto.

just start a bar on a poorfag budget, keep it dark and put up some neon shit and it'll already be punk. You can choose to make it a meme cyberpunk cosplay place for hipsters, or you can make a nice seedy bar where questionable people can come to drink and do business, which is IMO more /cyber/ than a cosplay salon.

Like look at what kowloon walled city was a few decades ago. it's cyberpunk as hell, but they didn't try to be. it's just cramped poorfags, crime, and neon lights man.

> What would a modern day cyberpunk-bar look like?

It's called, Black V& (Vanned) and it's not advertised.

It's really a group of nondescript hightech armored food trucks. Inside seats three or four at a small bar, each serves a selection of common drinks, and single specialty dish / drink. There's large monitors on the left and right as "walls", which show video feed from the other vans, making it appear to be much longer (infinitely circular).

The vans run routes which intersect two other vans, their routes can change depending on what the patrons order. The Black Vans make stops every few minutes to let folks on/off & exchange passengers. The "mobile app" allows you to avoid cover charges while doing "transfers" to make your way leisurely and covertly across town.

The mobile app is available for free sideloaded from a HTTP server inside any van, and also lets you place orders while not currently Black V& (don't visit us, we'll visit you). While not invite only, this does make the bar somewhat exclusive as it's difficult to get Black V& without it.

To order something not on your van's menu the payment APP shows ETA & notifies you when / where to transfer. See someone you like further on down "the bar", you can buy them a drink remotely & chat while sitting next to them (at the vid screen). Want to meet up? Just order the "house specialty" of the van they're in.

Being Black V& is the safest way to make it across the miles of dangerous inner cities. Keep it that way. Don't transfer the mobile app to shazbot lusers, or you'll be b&.

All of the black vans serve a small drink selection "of the rocks". Frozen in CO2 are flavored aromatic vapors. Denser than air, these drinks settle like cold smoke in the glass as the dry ice melts. Sip or huff the cup. Can't drink it too fast or spill too much, but don't drink it fast enough it harmlessly overflows into the air. Besides wisps of whiskey & nicotine there are other mood altering chemical cocktails available to taste and smell.

Don't be scared, "Chloroform" is just the name of a strong drink with downers, and the "Cyanide Soda" smells like almonds because almonds have cyanide in them…

It's BYOM at Black V&: Bring Your Own Mask, and not just for huffing.

If I could do everything I wanted, I'd build it like this.

I'd call the place Fever Dream.

The entrance would be a simple concrete hallway where a guard would check ID and let you into the hall, where the door would have a volumetric display on it, which would display a 3D face in lowpoly. It would require a spoken password to unlock, after which it would state simply "Welcome to Fever Dream."

The walls inside would be covered in large black hexagonal panels, with LED strips in between covered by diffusers. Overhead lighting would be "icicle" style LED lightbars that would be sound reactive, wired to the soundsystem. Probably arranged in simple staggered rows. They would be kept dim.

The bar would be constructed of steel and plexiglass, with a reactive surface screen. A large volumetric display would be angled 45 degrees from the ceiling with the same 3D face from the door looming above, looking around constantly.

Arranged in several places on the dancefloor would be dancer platforms. Probably a maximum of 4, with hired Go-Go dancers.

Seating would be arranged closer to the bar in the form of low tables surrounded by comfortable, low vinyl chairs.

private meeting rooms would be available upstairs, insulated enough from sound for conversation.

Adding to this. Fever Dream would accommodate aggressive electronic music styles(EBM, Oldschool Industrial, drum and bass, outrun, etc), goth, and maybe metal.

Bar food would be kept simple and able to be handheld. Tacos and wraps, burgers, etc. Also available would be meal replacement items like Soylent.

Private rooms would have slightly more advanced foods such as Soba, Nachos, Cheese/dried fruits/nuts platters, poutine, etc.

Prices would be kept as cheap as possible, and curated vendors would be allowed to set up either outside of the building or perhaps in a room off the hallway but still kept outside of the club proper. That way people could sell electronics, light up/glowing shit, 3D printed stuff, clothing, etc.

The thing about salty drinks/liquid food is that they won't quench your thirst.

They might not dehydrate you, maybe even rehydrate you a bit (depending on the amount of salt), but they just don't feel satisfying.

People eat salty chips and then wash it down with beer or coke for the sweet, schway contrast. Same would work with ramen.

hi /cyber/,

/lit/ here,

Question:

Why are we still fixated on the 1980s-culture version of cyberpunk? Is cyberpunk not allowed to grow as a genre? Everything "Japanese" about Cyberpunk was rooted in the very 1980s themes of:

* "The Japanese have all the cool tech toys." (ie; if anyone will invent a cyber arm, it will be them.)

* "The Japanese are going to take over the world with their tech-driven economic dominance and we welcome our futuristic cybernetic corporate overlords." (At least, welcome the opportunity to rebel against them with our 1337 haxxor skillz)

* "The Japanese have cavernous cities full of neon."

… NONE of which are still true today (at least not exclusively). So, why has the genre not moved-on from 1983?

Just seems very wapanese/weeaboo-driven.

>Everything "Japanese" about Cyberpunk was rooted in the very 1980s themes of:

I don't see much japenese in all this. The only thing that is really close to Japan in the genre is gloom and limiting reality of daily life forcing you into submission, as no society has come that far on this routeislamists maybe, but they are just aggressive thugs while japs are more advanced the same way there is a difference with forced psychiatric treatment and execution, or violence and passive aggressiveness

>"The Japanese have all the cool tech toys."

Science fiction has even more of those and has little to do with japs.

>"The Japanese are going to take over the world with their tech-driven economic dominance and we welcome our futuristic cybernetic corporate overlords."

For now they are not really into anything specific with their farmer crisis and stuff, not much is gonna change unless they go natsoc again.

>"The Japanese have cavernous cities full of neon."

Neon signs and 80s style is murrican invention and is mostly present there, afaik. High density cities are their thing though.

>why has the genre not moved-on from 1983

It is changing ,the problem is the genre itself is not very sound or precisely defined, so inclusions from other genres can turn it into other pretty easily as there is no solid structure widely accepted that makes a certain science fiction "cyberpunk".

There is also post-cyberpunk, where in an easy and softcore "dystopia" resembling cyberpunk visually cool kids are playing the Resistance and changing the world. The problem s not with casuality of the universe itself but its emptiness, unbelievability and bad characters. In the genre it's more common to see weeb stuff, though i dunno why really.

finally got around to checking out "witch house" music. It fits a cyberpunk theme, sort of, but it wouldn't really fit alongside other genres of actually good music. It seems to me that it's basically Trap music with a bit of 80's style synth in the background, leading me to think it would be better paired with Hip Hop, Gangsta Rap, etc. The term "witch house" seems misleading to me. I'd probably call it more "Dread Beat" or something like that.

In the club I have in mind, it might be ok to have a witch house night once in a while or something, though.

I really like this idea and have had a similar concept brewing. No Bitcoin here either, but one day I will fulfill this ambition, mark my words.

I'm thinking schway internet cafe with food and drink delivery via mini tram a la Japanese sushi bar. Decor includes EL wire, flexible displays, chrome, repurposed car parts, etc. Food may come with a little integrated "spice" to get them in the game, if they say a special phrase and flash an access card (both individualized to avoid narcs). They can also access one of several soundproof rooms to rent out and do whatever they like for however long in (so long as they got the dosh, ofc).

To me that's part of the idea with reserving private rooms, my ideas being touched upon in >>51211 and >>51266.

Essentially, the idea would be that private rooms would come with a booth, walls that partially soundproof, a video communications console of some kind, and would be locked from inside, only able to be overridden from the manager's office and/or security room. You rent the room, you use it for whatever the fuck you want. You bring the club legal trouble, however, and you're banned, permanently.

Read the rest dude. There would be a bouncer at the main door, plus a secondary door requiring a password. The difficulty of entry would require someone to at least be decent enough to be known by the manager, well enough to be trusted with a private room.

IMO, simple ground rules would apply.

>Leave the room in decent condition

>you break it, you pay to fix/replace it

>if you're gonna shoot up, do it at fucking home

>if you're gonna fuck in the room, you clean the resulting mess up. We have you leaving and entering the room on CCTV. We will fucking know.

Plus, trading for shit would mostly take place in the place mentioned separate. If you do business on our property and we aren't getting a cut, you get taken out back and worked over until we have our pound of flesh. It's a matter of respect. You respect us, we respect you.

Rooms would have a toilet flush mechanic where a pressurized rotating sprinkler sanitizes the room and a huge drain opens up at the bottom to dispose of the filthy leftovers.

There is a difference between resisting economic enslavement and resisting spooky ghosts and in fact if you've actually read any such fiction, which I doubt, you'd know that infantile ideas such as race having any sort of significance is laughable. No. It's not as simple as that and that's why there are many movements calling themselves "alter-globalization." The world is so inteconnected and growing closer every day and the idea of the nation-state is an obsolete one which is actually a hindrance to fixing problems. We are on the brink of total collapse because nation-states cannot work together to solve climate change with everyone looking out for their own short-sighted easily manipulated citizens. If we had world federal government, we'd have solved a lot of problems by now but because shazbot cunts want to "preserve" intangible and ever-changing concepts, the anthropocene is literally in its last days.

Just because corps themselves transcend nations, it doesn't mean that humankind should be held back by retrograde tribalist caveman ideas.

No. All human beings are social by nature and crave belonging. This does not mean they are inherently prone to subjecting themselves as cannon fodder for spooks like the nation-state.

Infantile strawman response. I chose my friends as everyone else, and the idea of aligning myself with the 99.999999% of people I've never met of the country which happens to be the one of my birth over people who happen to be born in other nation-states is ludicrous.

>World government only exacerbates the problem of the "short-sighted easily manipulated citizens".

No. You don't even explain how because there's no reason to your argument. World government would mean real solutions could be implemented to global problems unlike national governments which can't do shit being paralyzed by retrograde mindsets. We literally have 10 years (as per the IDCC) to completely cut CO2 emissions, yet it won't happen because shazbot fucks filled with delusional fantasies think that all other nations are evil but them, and ONLY IF OTHER NATIONS did something, it'd all be ok. You just imagined what we have today for national governments in western countries on a global scale. Not all countries function upon bribery from corporate entities and it (i.e. corporations and even capitalism itself) is only a recent phenomenon in human history. It isn't even inherent to any mode of being, yet this is how fundamentally controlled we truly are; we cannot even imagine a world without capitalism so in our minds the only solution is to "limit" it within national boundaries and authoritarianism. So long as I can turn a regular profit after paying rent, I'm glad to do whatever. Would likely hold gaming matches as well.

A cyberpunk bar would essentially be a hyper-aesthetic internet cafe with alcohol. If the previous cafe couldn't survive, I doubt the added benefit of overpriced beer or imported sake would save yours.

To your point about customers - something like this would never work outside of a big college town or major city, and you'd have to make damn sure your location works.

After reading through this thread and having been interested in the idea of making a "Cyberpunk-esque" bar, I have come up with three different ideas. They range from being full on aesthetic, to as genuine as possible. For the record, I live and work in Tokyo so that's where I would open the bar (and you could argue it's one of the most cyberpunk cities at least in terms of the vibe. Hong Kong would also be a good location).

Cyberpunk Experience Restaurant/Bar

>"hidden" location

>people make a reservation online at least a week beforehand

>a USB is sent to them with a small "hacking" puzzle which once solved, provides the bar's location and password to enter

>bar entrance is a black door with a keypad outside, password is used to open the door

>inside a bouncer double checks their reservation

>guests now go through an escape-room, working together to hack a mainframe (this is just a stop gap idea and will likely change)

>after the allotted time, they will have either won or lost. Winning gives discounts on their meal and drinks

>guests will be let into the restaurant/bar proper, where they will be able to choose food and drinks from a tablet on their table

So that's basically an escape room combined with a restaurant, using the cyberpunk aesthetic. It needs work so I'm open to ideas.

Cyberpunk Bar

>down an unassuming staircase in central Tokyo

>bar is low lighting with a very bare bones industrial look

>the bar itself sells cheap Kirin Heartland beer and a variety of cocktails

>cigarette vending machine next to bar

>some tables and chairs for the weeknights but on the weekends the chairs are removed to make.more space for a dance floor

>a resident/guest DJ plays drumnbass, techno, house

Real bar with cyberpunk lifestyle

>in shady area of Tokyo

>similar bar set up as above, cheap beer/cocktails, cheap instant ramen

>VPN set up for people to connect to and do their "illegal" hacking

>drugs sold secretly behind the counter

>customers are low lifes, hacker bros, Yakuza

>TL;DR it's cyberpunk because it's genuinely down-and-dirty not because of neon lights

I wonder if any of these ideas are feasible. I am open to suggestions on them. I accept it's more of a pipe dream, but I feel that the second bar idea could work well. There are already some clubs in Shibuya that cater to the techno crowd, but they are more styled purely as clubs.

The third is wannabe as fuck, just make a place with tech aesthetics and let it be and evolve on its own.

The "real bar" sounds like a gaming lounge in Montreal I used to go to. Very early in its life, it was sorta like that, minus actual hacking in favor of just playing video games. But it was a fighting games hangout so people had their diy'd or at least custom fightsticks. The tables were salvaged picnic tables, and the place had fairly harsh yet dim fluroscent lighting. On the menu was indeed cheap instant ramen (it was like two bucks or something) It wasn't in THAT shady an area, but it was still below a felafel place and next to several strip clubs and the place itself is in a dank basement (even cleaned up now they still have trouble with good ventilation and avoiding water damage) so it's a little shady I guess.

It's cleaned up a lot since, gotten real furniture, got a better menu and then rid of the menu altogether, etc. so it's really hip and fancy now, but when it started the walls were painted with just primer and the front end of the place was plywood diy XBOX360 "arcade cabinets" always running SF4, and some genuine pinball and classic arcade machines to their side

anyway my point here is it's totally feasible if you have a good location and a customer base that will have good reason to become regulars (such as having games available or being oriented towards some kind of work you could do drunk)

> Nationalism is inherently anti-individual (placing mind-AIDS like "the state" over all things).

You think of patriotism here. Nation actually means people. In the old days, it meant a coherent genetic and cultural group. If anything, the shared values, memories, culture and the accomplishments of individuals were part of the not yet labeled nationalism, and it involved a hefty amount of social justice too. At some point it got screwed with certain variants of feudalism, then later on with the industrial revolution and plutocrats (pre-globalists) already very aware of pitting migrants and women against working men who more or less found themselves forced to move closer to the cities, into the factories, because their life was becoming unmanageable in the countryside.

>but is it surprising that cyberpunk dystopias tend to be multicultural failed societies too?

I don't think classic cyberpunk writers really meant to use this as a cause rather than a symptom. Cyberpunk comes with the good and the bad, and it's up to you to decide whether what you are seeing is one of the dystopic parts, or one of the schway parts. There may be neutral components as well, that are just the logical reaction of either a schway part or a dystopic part, and they don't necessarily have to fit inside the "cool and bad" dichotomy. Gaudy fashion trends aren't necessarily bad, just a symptom of consumerism, for example.

In my opinion, multiculturalism falls in one of those reactions outside of the dichotomy, regardless of whether you personally think it is good or bad. It is meant to be the logical conclusion of global inequality and social atomization. People in cyberpunk settings migrate because they may be coming from poorer countries with less opportunities (this is where mass inmigration comes in play), or they may simply lack a sense of belonging to a place or community, which may push them to attempt to find their place in the world somewhere else, or maybe a combination of both.

If I recall correctly, Case, from Neuromancer, was born in America, yet he lived in Japan. I don't remember the book giving an explanation for this, but I assume it was because Case didn't feel to have a place in the world, and so he travelled just because he didn't have any strings attached. He didn't look like the kind of people who wanted to make a lot of brouzouf he blew most of the shitloads of brouzouf he got from The Job on a new computer and some silly shit, just get by, and he used to get by back in America, so he either migrated due to muh feels (which is unlikely, considering how much of a cold fish he is), or just because he could. This is probably not the same way for people migrating from poorer countries to richer ones, but you get the idea: the cyberpunk socioeconomic climate forces people to scramble.

If you are talking about cyberpunk societies in real life, though, multiculturalism is irrelevant. Japan is culturally homogenous as fuck, and yet they are peak cyberpunk.

There used to be a place here in St. Louis that honestly was pretty cyberpunk. It had a bank of old monitors mounted on the wall connected to a splitter, and an old box locked in a cabinet in the DJ booth played old anime, skateboarding, or cgi films like poyasqatsi. Sapporo was on tap as a special, and depending on the time of year there was sometimes a chef in the basement kitchen serving Vietnamese and bar food. There was a very powerful sound system with hanging JBL 2-ways chained to the rafters and a 5 foot tall double-stacked subwoofer. DJs played house, techno, or dubstep, sometimes downtenpo or hip-hop (the industrial/synth heavy scene was too much of a gatekept circle-jerk to come through, but no genres were kept out).

The place was always dark, the windows were always either covered or tinted, and most of the walls were painted black. There were diner-style booths with red vinyl benches, and if you knew the people spinning that night, you could make use of the slightly more private DJ booth to partake in most things as long as you weren't skeezing anyone out.

Several regulars there were barfly burnouts who were always looking to talk for hours about nothing in particular. There was no bouncer but the bartenders themselves although friendly, were built like a brick shithouse, and on some occasions ended several fights in one blow. Most people kept to themselves and discretion was never in short supply.

The owner/manager of the bar was the son of the owner of the building. After a roof collapse that forced them to close one of the businesses there (another bar), and the son passing away recently, the family decided to shutter their doors instead of trying to run the bar in his absence.

It was usually slow in terms of traffic on weeknights because most people were afraid of the spot, but weekends would attract crowds. I guess you never appreciate what you have until it's gone.

Sounds a bit like a more 水 version of a place here in London, Ontario called The Wreck'd Room.

Place was a shitty basement. More of a hallway than anything else. You'd come down the stairs from street level and on busier nights there'd be one bouncer at the door just to check ID. Entering the door, on your left would be the DJ booth set back into the wall. You could pretty much always expect a mix of industrial, darkwave, EBM, Dark Electro, Industrial Metal, and Nu Metal to be playing at high volume from a surprisingly good soundsystem.

In front of the DJ booth was a small space of only several meters square kept clear as a dance floor with a cheap strobe and laser above it, and crammed in after that along the wall was a shitty vinyl bench and a couple rickety tables.

On your right would be a scarred and ill maintained wooden bar and a couple stacks of beer boxes, with a small sign showing the drink specials and a long shelf lit by blacklight. On the far end of the bar would be a TV often tuned to a film channel or the news. The bar was always staffed by the asian owner, who eventually closed the place because he was hemorrhaging brouzouf keeping it open.

Walls were painted blue-grey and decorated with fading posters lit by blacklight, and in the back were a couple pool tables.

No food was available, but around the corner was a souvlaki/gyro place.

The place was pretty much Rivethead Central for the city until it closed down.

There is a bar/restaurant not far from me that is themed around video games.

You can go there with friends and do some co-op console gaming. You can even game alone, but I suck at console games so I don't do that.

The drinks and food are expensive. The decor is high-class. It is probably a profitable place. Colorful LEDs instead of neon, but very much like being inside a video game. Not very punk at all, so probably not what OP would want. But profitable.

Maybe a nice big metal topped bar with beveled edges, like a modified food prep table or something along those lines. Or a thick sheet of plexiglass with little lcd screens angled up at the patrons, screens with loops or movies or whatever. How hard could it be to make it so it blinks on and says hi when you sit down. Make it easy and cheap. People don't have to be focused on it, it would be a novelty.

What can we reuse and throw in to liven it up and add to the atmosphere? Get somebody to sketch regulars and put them up on the wall every so often. Turn on the happy hour led sign and hologram menus guys!

That would be pretty easy to fabricate, really. Just don't bother using plexiglass and use resin instead, since you can repair it easily and make a nice smooth even bevel. A simple set of sensors could detect when someone is in close proximity and switch the image to a little face smiling and waving with a "Hello!" and then to another one with a "Goodbye" when they leave as well. It wouldn't even take that much programming.
