When you use steriods for a while your HPG Axis shuts down. It is basically three different hormone producing parts of you body that use a synergystic interaction to manufacture testosterone. When you use steriods for a while the body senses that your body has excess male hormone, and shuts off production. With the interaction broken the hormone components no longer can function in their intended manner and end up bonding into estrogen. So when you use steriods for a long period of time your body can't turn on the HPG axis right away. Without that testosterone to balance yourself out you basically turn into a twelve year old girl. Acne, emotional outbursts, breast tissue growth, muscle atrophy . The whole spiel. Estrogen blockers work a few different ways. Some stop the prehormones from being developed. Some bond with them and turn them into something else. This gives your HPG axis time to recover.

When you are on short and low cycles you can usually save the estrogen blockers for when you are in the post cycle period. Longer and heavier cycles may require you to take them during a cycle because your body is so fucked up by how much male hormone is in your body that it is pumping out tons of estrogen and you are now an extremely big guy and having the emotional stability if a twelve year old girl is dangerous as fuck to the people around you.

Excess male hormone fucks your body up just like excess female hormone. There is a reason that the HPG axis switches back and forth. Male hormone is pretty hard on your body. It's one of the reasons why men, in general, die younger.
