*ITEM #*: SCP-43HU

*OBJECT CLASSIFICATION*: Safe

*SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES*: SCP-43HU is currently contained inside a standard 5x5 humanoid containment cell with attached to an indoor botanical garden. Though the garden is primarily used as a testing location for the subject's anomalous qualities, a part of its has been designated as a recreational area for the SPC-43HU; allowing it to keep itself occupied outside of its seasonal activity phase. Requests for plant seeds made by the subject may be granted so long as their cultivation poses no security threat.

As the subject's active phase only stretches across a limited lifespan, SCP-43HU should undergo enduring experimentation within this period in order to provide sufficient quantities of scientific data. The Foundation deems nine (9) hours of downtime (including sleeping hours) sufficient to guarantee peak efficiency and cooperative behavior in the subject.

As SCP-43HU requires faith to sustain itself, the subject has been installed as the mascot of a popular weekly gardening magazine. In the event that the sales of the publication should decline, financial resources for promotional measures are available.

*DESCRIPTION*: SCP-43HU physically resembles a young humanoid female with blonde hair and red irides. As in the case of most other kami-type specimen, the subject's anatomy is largely identical to that of a regular human, but SCP-43HU does neither age nor grow, and has shown great resilience to physical trauma (as the Foundation wishes to maintain a cooperative atmosphere, no extensive studies in this field has been performed thus far).

While SCP-43HU shares the usual anomalous properties of all HU-specimen (namely self-powered flight and the ability to fire danmaku projectiles), the subject's primary trait of interest only becomes active in the months between the annual summer solstice and the traditional Nimame-sai harvest festival (usually September 23rd). During this timespan, agricultural areas in a 30km radius around SCP-43HU will be subjected to several beneficial effects related to crop growth: Affected plants will produce highly elated levels of growth hormones; soil conditions will improve to provide additional nutrients, and parasitic organisms that might affect the crops undergo rapid cellular decay. The subject may furthermore be able to influence the local weather to provide irrigation in the form of rain and opportunities for photosynthesis via intense sunshine, but available data related to this phenomenon is inconclusive.

Aside from this indirect effect, SCP-43HU may also directly manipulate and increase the physical size of plant life; including non-crop plants. The extend of this ability varies according to the source material - most organisms can be enlarged to a maximum of twice their regular mean size, but certain plants can be scaled up to [REDACTED].

Despite of thorough testing, Foundation scientists so far have been incapable to describe the precise mechanisms behind both the indirect and direct abilities which SCP-43HU gains during its active phase. The most widely accepted theory implies that the subject can transform collected faith into matter (such as the aforementioned growth hormones or soil nutrients), but variations in the amount of faith made available to SCP-43HU so far only had a minimal impact upon its powers.

ADDENDUM_1: To ensure cooperative behavior, SCP-43 has been allowed to visit SCP-42 in its containment cell for a maximum of 30 hours a week outside of the annual testing sessions. Conversations between the two specimen must be analyzed for any signs of seditious behavior as soon as the two subjects are separated.

ADDENDUM_2: I would like to remind everyone that the roasted sweet potatoes produced by SCP-43HU are the subject of ongoing research on my part and thus are not available for consumption by other researchers, even if the specimen should offer them to anyone. I would also would like to make it perfectly clear that my monopoly on them is enforced for purely scientific reasons, not for culinary ones.

Source Material: Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas)

Result: Item enlargened to twice of its original size.

Source Material: Japanese cherry fruit (Prunus serrulata)

'''Result: Item enlarged to four times of its original size before losing structural integrity.

Source Material: Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi)

Result: Item enlarged to twice of its original size.

Source Material: Venus Flytrap (Dionae muscipula)

Result: [REDACTED]. The Foundation has taken full responsibility for the loss in human resources. In the event that SCP-43HU should mention the incident, it should be gently told that nobody blames it for the accident.

Did you know you're actually running MINIX/GNU/Linux? Well, you are.

http://archive.is/qyHmN

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MINIX

>If you learned about operating systems in the late '80s and early '90s, you knew MINIX as Andrew S Tanenbaum's educational Unix-like operating system. It was used to teach operating system principles. Today, it's best known as the OS that inspired Linus Torvalds to create Linux.

So, what's it doing in Intel chips? A lot. These processors are running a closed-source variation of the open-source MINIX 3. We don't know exactly what version or how it's been modified since we don't have the source code. We do know that with it there:

>1. Neither Linux nor any other operating system have final control of the x86 platform

>2. Between the operating system and the hardware are at least 2 ½ OS kernels (MINIX and UEFI)

>3. These are proprietary and (perhaps not surprisingly) exploit-friendly

>4. And the exploits can persist, i.e. be written to FLASH, and you can't fix that

>In addition, thanks to Minnich and his fellow researchers' work, MINIX is running on three separate x86 cores on modern chips. There, it's running:

>* TCP/IP networking stacks (4 and 6)

>* File systems

>* Drivers (disk, net, USB, mouse)

>* Web servers

>MINIX also has access to your passwords. It can also reimage your computer's firmware even if it's powered off. Let me repeat that. If your computer is "off" but still plugged in, MINIX can still potentially change your computer's fundamental settings.

>And, for even more fun, it "can implement self-modifying code that can persist across power cycles". So, if an exploit happens here, even if you unplug your server in one last desperate attempt to save it, the attack will still be there waiting for you when you plug it back in.

How? MINIX can do all this because it runs at a fundamentally lower level.

>x86-based computers run their software at different privilege levels or "rings". Your programs run at ring three, and they have the least access to the hardware. The lower the number your program runs at, the more access they have to the hardware. Rings two and one don't tend to be used. Operating systems run on ring zero. Bare-metal hypervisors, such as Xen, run on ring -1. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) runs on ring -2. MINIX? It runs on ring -3.

>You can't see it. You can't control it. It's just humming away there, running your computer. The result, according to Minnich is "there are big giant holes that people can drive exploits through." He continued, "Are you scared yet? If you're not scared yet, maybe I didn't explain it very well, because I sure am scared."
