 No.976607>>978443 >>978475 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

With all the bad news we've had, it seemed like a good time to resurrect this thing. This thread is for discussing open source tools and utilities for creating art, music, video editing and 3D modeling. Also free culture projects if they contribute to OSS.

But when I tried Azpainter, it just clicked for me, I have been using it since March or around and I love it.

I don't know for other people but I just have some rare/occasional sign of memory badly written, like the layer label changing itself, and rare crash. I recompiled the thing with debug symbols and no optimization and it seem to not crash, but still have layer label rewritten.

None of Adobe's individual programs have been beat by a FOSS alternative, let alone their entire suite.

Even if you combined all the features of Krita and Gimp AND molded them into the level of Krita's intuitiveness, it still would be lackluster compared to Photoshop in many ways (despite having a couple advantages).

The Mac version is FOSS as well. Both the Mac & GNUstep versions are built from a shared codebase, which is licensed under AGPLv3:

I don't tend to use too much brushes. but as for the things I tested it was pretty nice. UI wise or brush engine, tools, etc.

but my main concern is Speed and responsiveness or whatever you want to call it.

Sai is simply unchallenged in being light as fuck and never suffer from lag, stuttering or any other similar stuff even at big resolutions. If you want something similar or as good as that. you have to pay for CPS or opencanvas afaik.

I'm so used to Sai that any other software feels slow and bloated in comparison. Krita being the worst, it feels like a resource hog, mostly because the algorithm that uses for zoom tend to leave so me bullshit working on background.

and the brush engine is not that optimized for complex ones.

sure you can make it faster working with simpler brushes (I created some.) but still with that suffers by more different factors.

I even feel that the floating text that says what are you doing in the GUI introduce some sort of lag.

mypaint is similar

also I haven't found a way to have 1-bit layers in krita to try different stuff for manga like work.

Sad because I do really like krita and I want to work with it. but it tends to kill my mood because of the performance issues. probably is a problem of mine because I'm kinda known for having a very fast workflow.

Talking about krita VS gimp. Gimp is Still better for text work. both of them lack simple things as a nice visualization of the fonts and border rendering as a simple option.

Gimp is introducing font tags and shit. so I'll wait to see what happens.

being honest I don't care if the fonts are vectors or not. I just want them to work as simple and fast as they can.

Gimp is even better than OO/MS word to this. doing simple stuff like having baseline, kerning and instant preview out the box is good but there's not a non-destructive rotation and border. As someone that worked with it for manga translation I had to feel the pain a lot.

and just saying, having layer styles for font border is just nonsense and not optimal.

I'd like to try more of Azpainter and see if the performance of it wasn't affected by some driver issue or whatever. but in order to do that I need to deal with linux more. and due the current situation with the COCk I don't feel like the bother for now.

Also. since several years ago /tech/ is full of furries and /g/ is full of trap/faggots.

pick your poison.

Something I've never understood about creative programs is why do they insist on making the "recent files" list so fucking short?

You could trivially have a list of 100s of recent files, or if you really feel like not copypasting features then you could even add a tagging/bookmarking/search system to organize and look for files you've edited before. Probably 80% of the time I want to edit some file I have somewhere rather than opening a new one, so it's baffling that I still have to browse through folders to open them in every program every time.

Now, there are erotic manga artists that may do well from it, but that's a different topic altogether. Doujinshi sales are allowed to go on only because the companies that hold the copyright do not choose to go after these artists, even though it's all technically illegal, so they are allowed to make and profit from works based on copyrighted material. A lot of copyright holders see this as free advertisement, and as it's made by fans for fans, they don't seem to have a problem with it.

Today's Krita update supposedly makes painting more responsive. It probably needs a huge refactoring to get Sai-tier performance but for now every little bit helps.

>Dmitry Kazakov has worked like crazy fixing bugs and improving Krita in the past couple of weeks. One of the things he did was improve Instant Preview mode. Originally funded by our 2015 Kickstarter, Instant Preview works by computing a scaled-down version of the image and displaying that. But with some brushes, it would cause a little delay at the end of a stroke, or some flickering on the canvas: BUG:361448. That’s fixed now, and painting really feels smoother! And for added smoothness, most of Ivan Yossi’s Google Summer of Code work is also included in this release.

I think the only pure one here is Shichimi. but I don't like her.

If I need to choose one, that's Pepper. she has the personality I feel more motivated do something about the lack of R34

but I don't think this comic is big enough to deal with porn.

and also I think pron can affect it's image in a negative way.

talking about the comic itself, the art is good. but I don't think is that creative in terms of story or story telling.

I'm really happy FOSS software is starting to get more popular in Japan. Since a lot of Japanese uses older computers, Azpainter probably runs a lot lighter compared to Krita for them.

I just wish the interface could be improved a bit. The program has a ton of potential. My main program will still be Krita but I'll probably use Azpainter more for lineart.

>Hi! It's October and many artists around the world started the Inktober challenge. I completed this challenge twice already (you can browse the artworks of last year here). But this year, I decided I'll not participate to the Inktober challenge: I'll keep working hard on the future episodes of Pepper&Carrot. The future episodes are rather ambitious and I need to maximize my available time for them. I'm working on a new arc; a trilogy of episodes happening in the city of Qualicity with Pepper, Coriander and Shichimi as main characters. I named this trilogy The coronation of Coriander. So, may that be my Inktober challenge: deliver episode 27 before the end of the month! Thank you for your patience.

>all of a sudden

This isnt a new thing, I've always found them immensely bland and it's just the thirsty fag constantly posting about it who brought it out of me. From both a visual and conceptual level there's nothing interesting about them, I would rather see something with the girl in the first few pics of this thread than these 'witches'.

It's not that I'm against humans either, but there's nothing to grab onto and get excited to do like with Kiki or LWA, Ava's Demon ect. From a character design perspective the comic guy is just not that good and the world building is abysmal random 'episodic' events that have nothing to do with eachother so it's not going to get much fanart with low appeal and low effort to flesh them out with a story to make me care about any of them. At the end of the day they just look like normal girls cosplaying witches in a fake setting which is why maybe some people feel 'guilty' over lewding them.

The CC liscence kind of proves the point, he's more interested in doing random fantasy artwork than a narrative. Even SoL comics have some loose continuity that you can point to but not really Pepper and Carrot. So it's just random 'cute' girls doing 'cute' witch things but nothing to get invested in long term. He's a good artist but a lousy story teller. Which leaves it to somebody else except he didn't establish a hook or even a consistent lore, for anyone to build off of, stuff just happens the author feels like for the fotm fantasy today. There isn't even an established limit or machination on what they can do or why, the so whole 'webcomic' feels like asspull after asspull in some fantasy eyecandy wrapper.

 No.982285>>983508

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with being episodic, but I'd say P&C is more semi-episodic. Shit that changes carries over from episode to episode, it's just what's going on right now that is taking up the focus of the story.

Tools and brushes is lacking, no gmic filter, there is brush smoothing or stabilizer but weirdly placed inside brush settings rather at the toolbar, you need to get used to it shortcut but some of can be change.

Have some backbone and do it now so we don't have to suffer your degeneracy for that long.

It looks muted because RGB displays can't represent CMYK accurately. That's why when working in print design you need to print off proofs to check colors.
