No, he can learn general web dev bullshittery (HTML, js, css), but learning a specific web framework oftentimes is pointless, as new fads constantly arise and fade (angular, react, rails, etc), so one is better off learning general purpose stuff and thereafter whatever nonsense your current job requires you to use

All computers are number-crunching electrical machines, which is what the Code book is about (and how those machines can turn electrical input into computation). It's a really good book, but it doesn't have anything to do with OP's question.

Otherwise, only bother with frameworks when you're working with something that already uses one.

mithril is basically ncurses for the browser, with the same fundamental rationale: DOM updates are slow as fuck, so you should maintain a virtual DOM and use diffing to optimize your actual updates. This is what makes React good and Mithril does it just fine. All the rest, JSX and such, is just fat.
