So, my shitty 10-year-old laptop is finally dying and I'm going to have to buy a new one soon. Should I go for a t60 or a t420? I'll mostly use it for web browsing and maybe some light video editing. I'm having real trouble setting for one specific memepad. I have owned every single memepad on this list and they have all annoyed me in some way.
T60: too heavy, too old
T410: even heavier, GPU is shit
T420: too heavy, GPU is shit, shitty screen
T430: too heavy, shitty screen, meh keyboard
X220: GPU is shit, shitty screen
X220T: GPU is shit, heavier than the x220 but manageable
X240: disgusting keyboard and touchpad, single channel RAM
X230: current
I'm... "okay" with this one, I guess. I miss the old keyboard but I can live with this. Was thinking of getting the x230T, that's the same thing but a bit heavier and you also get a touchscreen. Then, upgrading it with a backlit keyboard because the most likely scenario is that it won't come with one.
So.. what do you think? should I stop this consumerist frenzy and stick with the x230 or get the x230T and then stop?

Also I'm not the author of the image, feel free to shoop/gimp/mspaint/whatever it to your liking. The points regarding the keyboard and touchpad are somewhat valid (the ugly yuro one should at least be replaced with an ANSI one).
Concerning FP scanner opinions seem to differ, in the previous Thinkpad thread an anon argued that the old FP scanners aren't botnet because they store the fingerprint inside themselves and only send a hash of sorts ("fingerprint of the fingerprint" so to speak) via the driver, as opposed to the newer ones which are basically cameras which send the actual fingerprint image to the OS.

But it's not shorter at all. It's wider. Eample: you have a 1600x1200 (4:3) screen. You add 10% of the total width (i.e. 160 pixels) to each side, resulting in a 1920x1200 (16:10) screen. Now 16:9 is actually shorter because you arrive at it by starting with 16:10 and then taking away the top 10% (120 pixels) arriving at a 1920x1080 screen, but we're not talking about that, are we.

posted this on the other chan but I'll probably get better advice here.
I'm going into college for engineering and they have a list of $2000 "recommended" laptops for students. I already figured out I didn't need one. The thinkpad that was on their list was a p51, and I found out that I wouldn't really need heavy solidworks capability on my laptop for school anyway.
So then I had decided to take the money I would have spent and get an x230 AND t430, and upgrade both with SSD, more RAM, classic keyboards, etc. and still come out paying only like $800 total.
today I went to fry's and I had the opportunity to try out a x131e AMD thinkpad, and I really liked it. Now I kind of want one of those. and after that I got sidetracked and now I don't even know if I should be getting chink lenovo thinkpads or if there is something better out there.
so basically should I still go for the x230 and t430 combo? I figured I would use the X for something more portable, and the T (with NVIDIA graphics) in case I really did need to do CAD or something on the go. I'll still have access to lab computers and my own desktop PC. Or should I go for an x131e instead of the x230? so many damn decisions.

>should I get a thinkpad
It depends on what you are using it for. If you are going to use a laptop only keep one of them. The model number of the laptop only emphasizes the build quality of the case of which thinkpads are known for high build quality. What matters is what is inside and the vent positions.
You seem to need to do CAD work so let me make some suggestions. Get a nvidia card before the 800 series, preferably somewhere in the 700's as the reclocking support for nouveau is awesome and rivals/beats the proprietary driver now. If you can find a thinkpad with a 700 series nvidia card don't hesitate to get it as the thinkpads are known for their high build quality and withstanding punishment like industrial worksite punishment.
AMD CPU's are nice if you install gentoo and use only FOSS software because you will get better multicore performance which is awesome for CAD, ONLY IF YOU COMPILE EVERYTHING YOURSELF. Modern distros are not compiled for huge multitasking on multiple cores like you would want with AMD CPU's. Some distro's like clearlinux actually put instructions in to fuck up on AMD CPU's. If you are going to use any propietary software that has huge proccessing requirements on the CPU then get a intel CPU its fucking botnet.
Do not get the AMD GPU's as they require a blob loaded by the kernel to work and are fucking botnet. Ideally you would want a AMD CPU and a nvidia GPU prior to the 800 series in one package or the ability to put a nvidia GPU into it. The reason I emphesize the nvidia GPU with nouveau is because the openCL for FOSS or cuda for propietary would be much better then AMD's GPUs for CAD work with FOSS.
T.person who never owned a thinkpad.
But seriously, it's fucking botnet. Wait for RISC-V and suck it up till then

I hate proprietary blobs as much as the next guy, but labelling them 'botnets' is an erroneous claim - a GPU doesn't have networking capability, so even if it had some way to collect analytics, they'd need physical access to your machine to see the data.

Anyone with a brain disables WebGL + JavaScript; how would a FOSS driver protect against this exploit if it you have those enabled exactly? It's a vector for attack, sure - but the IME/PSP modules/Spectre exploits would be easier to use against you. What's hilarious to me is that they're complaining about remote unverified code execution, while enabling JavaScript on every website. Binary blobs are evil, yes - but they can't spy on you.

I like AMD as opposed to intel, but I KNOW I will be forced to use proprietary shit for school anyway. I also didn't know the T4xx series even had AMD options. I figured I would get something with an i7 and use me_cleaner, and also I remember somewhere there is a new way to toggle a bit in the CPU that can disable ME using HAP (high assurance platform, apparently something that the govt can use to disable ME shit for their own devices, but we can use as well if you do the right steps).

First off don't use libreboot, it's a meme.

You can technically flash the bios of up to a T400 but it's extremely complicated.
▶ No.939506

>If I am planning on installing libreboot by myself is it required to use some raspberry Pi to flash the bios or whatever it is?
Depends on the model. T60/X60 can be flashed internally. Other models will generally require external flashing. Even with a T/X60, it's a good idea to have the hardware for an external flash on hand in case you brick the motherboard on accident. I'm speaking from experience.

I'll tell you from experience that the x6x models are CCFL. I'm not completely sure about other models, but I think the switch happened somewhere around the xx00 or xx10 models. You'll have to do your own research to find out which models are upgradable.

intermittent system board issues sound like a problem with the caps. Being that you bought it from a street shitter who probably never once saw what an AC looks like, I'm guessing it overheated multiplet times and wore out the capacitors. Buy a Snap-On soldering iron, learn to solder/de-solder on garbage, then man the fuck up and replace them all on the board. It's a skill everyone should know and caps are dirt cheap anyway.

Is eBay the only place to buy an X/T60 or X200? I live in NYC and figured there would be an occasional post on craigslist considering there is like 9 million fucking people here, but so far no dice. And I haven't seen anything on eBay that wasn't way overpriced, or a real piece of shit.

I hate trannies as much as the next ubermensch, but is there a technical reason as to why Coreboot is preferred over Libreboot? Excepting the fact that there is much newer/faster hardware available for Coreboot, I thought Libreboot was superior, freedumbs and security wise?

Hey, I have a problem with my T410. The screen started acting weird a while back (making white horizontal lines and the way I would fix it was by pushing on the sides of the screen until it went away and I would add duct tape to keep if "fixed". One day it broke the screen and now I'm wondering if it was the screen being fucked or if it was the hinges (they're normal nothing seems wrong with them). Should I buy a screen of the whole upper part of a T410 ?
