You have no right to force anyone else to use anything if they don't accept it. Use whatever application you want and if others want to talk to you they can install it.

It's pretty simple, you just continue to use them while everyone else uses whatever.

There are only 3 options here :

1) Only make friends with fellow people like yourself, who love computers, freedom and computer freedom.

2) You realistically do not have any friends, in which case this is most likely irrelevant, but consider switching to 1.

3) Tell your non-autist friends firmly : 'you will not hamper my freedom anymore!' and proceed to explain to them the benefits of GNU, GPL, public key cryptography as defined by Merkle in his 1980 paper.

I use Signal with people who want to communicate with me. I don't think it's too much too ask for, and I'm happy to eyplain my reasoning to anyone, but I've still had people uninstall it because they told me "they had too many apps and everybody uses WhatsApp anyway".

For those people I fall back on unencrypted E-Mail and SMS, but I'm torn on the question of installing an obvious data-gathering scheme by Facebook.

I would probably be okay with WhatsApp, if there was a way to contain it to a certain subset of contacts, instead of uploading all of them.

A bigger issue than encrypted messages themselves though is that most people use cloud backup options by default, not realizing the extent of data they hand over to Google and Apple, which defeats the purpose of encrypted messaging in the first place.

I use WhatsApp but I don't even allow it run on background.

I don't use shit like whatsapp. If people need to contact me, they can either call my phone number for time sensitive matters or just send me an email.
