First of all, that's undefined behavior. In every circumstance compiler decides its own specific outcome. Second of all, you shouldn't care in which order statements on the same line are executed, as they are presumed to be one and whole. I wrote a program where those functions prompts the user for some information. I'd rather prompt for the wholesale cost of an item before prompting for the markup percentage, not the other way around.

This is indeed a valid complaint. Common Lisp requires function calls and declarations to be evaluated from left to right and Algol 68 lets them be parallel.

I suspect this is because arguments are pushed onto the stack in reverse order. This makes functions with variable numbers of arguments, like printf, easier to write.
