Okay lads, what do we do about the proprietary firmware running on vehicle Engine Control Units/Engine Computers? Will the GNU/Car ever become reality?

Also, Teslas supposedly run Ubuntu for the Head Unit software, BUT, no doubt there is an underlying proprietary firmware for things like the motor controllers, and the Battery Management System (BMS)

Excellent, how do I drop this into my Lexus LS400 and tweak for either more horsepower or improved knock sensors so I don't have to worry about dropping non-premium fuel in there?

Remove old ECU, install rusEfi. But isn't actual ECU separate from botnet on head unit? If updating firmware of ECU is not part of normal usage then as Stallman says its not botnet:

>...if updating software is not a normal part of use of the device, then it is not a computer. In that case, I think the user need not take cognizance of whether the device contains a processor and software, or is built some other way. However, if it has an "update firmware" button, that means installing different software is a normal part of use, so it is a computer.

I don't know how much botnet is in ECUs of newer cars but cars from 90s and early 00s should not contain any botnet. Maybe you just need to remove head unit as all the botnet features are probably there? In any case if you have time you could probably could run DIY ECU but you would have to learn how to use/install it first which would take some time and require second car to use while you are installing GPL ECU.

What kind of fucked definition is that? So all computers with ROM-resident Operating Systems like older home computers aren't actually computers? Sometimes Stallman says some really retarded shit in his rants and ramblings but he does have legit autism so I'll go easy on him.

That statements covers only appliances with embedded computers. Normal computers should have all freedoms. He also probably wrote this a long time ago when embedded systems weren't powerful enough to run botnet. I wouldn't worry about 8-bit mcu in my fridge that just displays temperature on 7 segment display and controls the compressor. Systems are changing though. Maybe he should update definition to also include devices capable of connecting to the internet or other networks even if they don't have update firmware button.

You can do a lot with an 8 bit processor. You ever see that movie Wargames? Matthew Broderick nearly ended humanity with a TRS 80 But seriously, you'd be surprised what 8 bits can do.

Yes, 8-bit processors can do quite impressive things (webm related). I have several 8-bit AVR MCUs which I use for various tasks. My point was that most simple appliances which use them aren't connected anywhere. My oven does not have wifi or bluetooth, nor does my washing machine. I am not concerned about software being proprietary there. I wouldn't buy a fridge/oven that is running linux though. That is way too much processing power to turn on some relays when temperature rises. This also reminds me of http://philip.greenspun.com/humor/eecs-difference-explained

>1. have washing machine

>machine keeps secret records of washes and has hardcoded killswitch to stop working on X date

>2. have pod coffee machine

>coffee machine only works with Keurig pods because DRM

>coffee machine says it needs to be serviced if it detects 'tampering' (AKA user opened case)

<I'm not concerned about software being proprietary there

You're right, it's better for trash to go straight into the trash can. The only problem is everything is trash (or on its way to becoming trash).

Older cars like my 91 NA has a aftermarket ecu

Fucking hell, either use the proper terms or kill yourself.

Yes. That's why the FSF didn't have any problems with BIOS at the beginning --because they couldn't be updated or modified in any way. It was when reflashing BIOS became possible that they started with libre BIOS and stuff.

It's also why they don't have any problems with GPUs.

Bear in mind that he was most likely referring to washing machines, the ABS on a car, a refrigerator, AC Unit, a toy or an old TV; regular appliances that aren't supposed to be tampered or interfaced with in any way. Other stuff like Internet of Shit and "infotainment" systems in cars are a different story.
